Light Trap Records of \u3ci\u3ePhyllophaga\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in Wisconsin, 1984-1987
Phyllophaga adults (June beetles) were surveyed from 1984 through 1987 at five locations in Wisconsin using black light traps. Data were collected at each location for three consecutive years. A total of 9,259 specimens representing 13 species were collected during the survey. Species captured, sex ratios, and flight periods for abundant species were recorded for each location. Species abundance differed from previous surveys of Phyllophaga in Wisconsin. Possible reasons for observed shifts in species abundance are discussed
Effects of prolonged acceleration with or without clinostat rotation on seedlings of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh
Three 21-day tests of the effects of chronic centrifugation were carried out on populations of Arabidopsis thaliana. In addition to 1 g the resultant g-forces tested were: 2,4,6,8,16, and 20 g. Observed end points included gross morphological characters such as size of plant organs and, at the other extreme, features of sub-cellular structure and ultrastructure. Plants were grown on banks of clinostats. The acceleration vector was directed either parallel with the plants' axes or transverse to the axes. Plant responses to chronic axial acceleration and to transverse acceleration with clinostated plants were determined. From the data obtained it was possible in some cases: (1) to determine the g-functions of specific plant developmental characters; (2) to extrapolate those functions to the hypothetical value at zero g in order to predict (tentatively) the morphology of a plant grown in space, (3) to describe morphological effects of clinostat rotation, (4) to determine which of those effects was influenced by the prevailing g-force, and (5) to put to direct test the assumption that clinostat rotation nullifies or compensates for the influence of gravity
PROCUREMENT STRATEGIES TO MEET FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS IN WHEAT SHIPMENTS
Consistency of functional characteristics in wheat is a concern confronting buyers and sellers. This research analyzes the cost and risk of different procurement strategies for importers. A stochastic simulation model is used to determine the probability of a functional characteristic being satisfied subject to quality targets. Joint probabilities of meeting specifications and costs were determined for alternative functional characteristics. Results indicate that, as more specific characteristics are incorporated into a contract, the probabilities of meeting end-use requirements increase. Specific characteristics come with a higher cost, due to increased testing costs related to identity preservation. The results are summarized as cost/risk tradeoffs confronting buyers in wheat procurement.buying strategies, location, variety, functional characteristic tests, costs, risks, Crop Production/Industries, International Relations/Trade,
Dilaton-Axion hair for slowly rotating Kerr black holes
Campbell et al. demonstrated the existence of axion ``hair'' for Kerr black
holes due to the non-trivial Lorentz Chern-Simons term and calculated it
explicitly for the case of slow rotation. Here we consider the dilaton coupling
to the axion field strength, consistent with low energy string theory and
calculate the dilaton ``hair'' arising from this specific axion source.Comment: 13 pages + 1 fi

Statistical properties of Klauder-Perelomov coherent states for the Morse potential
We present in this paper a realistic construction of the coherent states for
the Morse potential using the Klauder-Perelomov approach . We discuss the
statistical properties of these states, by deducing the Q- and P-distribution
functions. The thermal expectations for the quantum canonical ideal gas of the
Morse oscillators are also calculated

A Comparison of Young Children\u27s Writing Products in Skills-Based and Whole Language Classrooms
Whole language instruction and an emphasis on the writing process have had a significant impact on the teaching of writing. Many whole language teachers are already in practice, and more educators are moving toward this kind of teaching. However, comparative research on the value of whole language curriculum is limited. It is important to study children\u27s interpretations (Erickson and Shultz, 1992) as they are reflected in the written products they generate in different kinds of classrooms. We need to know more about the sense children make of their instruction, what they are learning about written language, and the kinds of writing they produce. The purpose of this article is to report on a two-year, descriptive study of eight, low-income children\u27s writing in skills-based and whole language instruction during kindergarten and first grade. Our focus was on the development of emergent writers in these two different kinds of instruction
