    A Systematic Review Including an Additional Pediatric Case Report: Pediatric Cases of Mammary Analogue Secretory Carcinoma

    Importance Mammary Analogue Secretory Carcinoma (MASC) is a newly characterized salivary gland carcinoma resembling secretory carcinoma of the breast. Prior to being described, MASC was most commonly misdiagnosed as Acinic Cell Carcinoma. Though MASC is predominantly an adult neoplasm, cases have been reported in the pediatric population. Reporting and summarizing of known cases is imperative to understand the prognosis and clinical behavior of MASC. Objective (1) Report a rare case of pediatric MASC. (2) Review and consolidate the existing literature on MASC in the pediatric population. Evidence review Web of Science, Medline, EMBASE, and The Cochrane Library were searched for studies that included pediatric cases of MASC. Data on clinical presentation, diagnosis and management, and pathology were collected from all pediatric cases. Findings Case Report 14 year old with left-sided parotid mass diagnosed as MASC based on histology and immunohistochemistry. He was managed surgically with left superficial parotidectomy with selective neck dissection. Literature review The majority of MASC cases have been identified via retrospective reclassification of previously misclassified salivary gland tumors. Of all the pediatric cases (N=11) of MASC, the female-to-male ratio is 1:1.2 with an age range of 10-17 years old. The most common clinical presentation was a slowly growing, fixed, and painless mass of the parotid gland, often detected incidentally on physical examination. Common pathological features include eosinophilic vacuolated cytoplasm within cystic, tubular, and/or papillary architecture. Immunohistochemistry showed positivity for S100, mammaglobin, cytokeratin 19, and vimentin. The diagnosis was confirmed by the detection of the characteristic ETV6-NTRK6 fusion gene via fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH). Only 4 cases discussed treatment. Each of these underwent successful surgical resection alone with or without lymph node dissection. Conclusions and relevance Since the first case of MASC in the pediatric population was described in 2011, only 12 cases, including this one, have been described in the literature. With this paucity of information, much remains unknown regarding this new pathologic diagnosis. The collection of clinical outcomes data of children with MASC is needed to better understand the behavior of this malignancy as well as determine optimal treatment regimens

    Predispositions and the Political Behavior of American Economic Elites: Evidence from Technology Entrepreneurs

    Economic elites regularly seek to exert political influence. But what policies do they support? Many accounts implicitly assume economic elites are homogeneous and that increases in their political power will increase inequality. We shed new light on heterogeneity in economic elites' political preferences, arguing that economic elites from an industry can share distinctive preferences due in part to sharing distinctive predispositions. Consequently, how increases in economic elites' influence affect inequality depends on which industry's elites are gaining influence and which policy issues are at stake. We demonstrate our argument with four original surveys, including the two largest political surveys of American economic elites to date: one of technology entrepreneurs—whose influence is burgeoning—and another of campaign donors. We show that technology entrepreneurs support liberal redistributive, social, and globalistic policies but conservative regulatory policies—a bundle of preferences rare among other economic elites. These differences appear to arise partly from their distinctive predispositions

    Broward Community College and Brevard Community College with support from the Boeing Company-KSC, the Florida Space Institute, Texas A&M University and the Association of Small Payload Researchers (ASPR) will fly 3 remote sensing, 3 microgravity 2 radiation measurement experiments and 1 genotoxicology experiment in a Get Away Special (GAS) container through NASA’s GAS payload program. Students from fields as diverse as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Electrical, Computer and Mechanical Engineering, Astronomy, Marine Science, and Environmental Science will benefit from involvement in every level of design, fabrication, testing, calibration, and data analysis. Three earth viewing remote sensing experiments will include a hyperspectral imaging holographic Fourier transform spectrometer, a high radiometric accuracy narrow band 4 channel discrete radiometer, and a 3 channel high spatial resolution imager. Three microgravity experiments involve crystal growth: Calcium Tartrate crystals will be grown using a gel and diffusion method. Carbon dioxide will be combined with dimethylamine to form crystals. CuInSe thin films will be electro-deposited from aqueous solution. Three radiation experiments include: A genotoxicology experiment to determine the degree to which DNA from man, chicken, fish, and plants, is damaged by exposure to cosmic radiation. Cosmic ray background intensity will be monitored using a standard Geiger tube. A separate module will record the path and intensity of cosmic rays as they pass through shielded photographic emulsions. The importance of interdisciplinary training is fundamental to this payload and to the teaching of the natural sciences. This innovative student oriented project will payoff not only in new science data, but also in accomplishing training for the next generation of environmental and space scientists

    Keck Interferometer autoaligner: algorithms and techniques

    The Keck Interferometer includes an autoalignment system consisting of pop-up targets located at strategic locations along the beam trains of each arm of the instrument along with a sensor and control system. We briefly describe the hardware of the system and then proceed to a description of the two operational modes of the system. These are: 1) to provide an initial alignment of the coude paths in each arm, and 2) to recover coude alignments between changes of the static delay sled positions. For the initial alignment mode, we review the system performance requirements along with the software used for image acquisition and centroiding. For coudé alignment recovery, we describe beam-train surveys through the static delay (Long Delay Line) and criteria for a successful recovery of a coudé alignment. Finally, we describe the results of testing of the autoalignment system

    Evaluation Research and Institutional Pressures: Challenges in Public-Nonprofit Contracting

    This article examines the connection between program evaluation research and decision-making by public managers. Drawing on neo-institutional theory, a framework is presented for diagnosing the pressures and conditions that lead alternatively toward or away the rational use of evaluation research. Three cases of public-nonprofit contracting for the delivery of major programs are presented to clarify the way coercive, mimetic, and normative pressures interfere with a sound connection being made between research and implementation. The article concludes by considering how public managers can respond to the isomorphic pressures in their environment that make it hard to act on data relating to program performance.This publication is Hauser Center Working Paper No. 23.     In Democracy for Realists, Christopher Achen and Larry Bartels argue that the depressingly well-established fact that people are woefully ignorant on politically relevant matters renders democratic ideals mere “fairy tales.” However, this iconoclasm stands in deep tension with the prescriptions they themselves end up offer-ing towards the end of the book, which coincide to a surprising extent with those that have been offered by democrats for decades. This is a problem because, if we take seriously the type of data that Achen and Bartels rely on (and add to)—data that should make us realists in the sense of the book’s title—it is not clear that democracy in any recognizable sense remains an option for the realist

    Contributions and perspectives of Indigenous Peoples to the study of mercury in the Arctic

    Arctic Indigenous Peoples are among themost exposed humanswhen it comes to foodbornemercury (Hg). In response, Hgmonitoring and research have been on-going in the circumpolar Arctic since about 1991; this work has beenmainly possible through the involvement of Arctic Indigenous Peoples. The present overview was initially conducted in the context of a broader assessment of Hg research organized by the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme. This article provides examples of Indigenous Peoples' contributions to Hg monitoring and research in the Arctic, and discusses approaches that could be used, and improved upon, when carrying out future activities. Over 40 mercury projects conducted with/by Indigenous Peoples are identified for different circumpolar regions including the U.S., Canada, Greenland, Sweden, Finland, and Russia as well as instances where Indigenous Knowledge contributed to the understanding of Hg contamination in the Arctic. Perspectives and visions of future Hg research as well as recommendations are presented. The establishment of collaborative processes and partnership/co-production approaches with scientists and Indigenous Peoples, using good communication practices and transparency in research activities, are key to the success of research and monitoring activities in the Arctic. Sustainable funding for community-driven monitoring and research programs in Arctic countries would be beneficial and assist in developing more research/monitoring capacity and would promote a more holistic approach to understanding Hg in the Arctic. These activities should be well connected to circumpolar/international initiatives to ensure broader availability of the information and uptake in policy development
