During the last decades the world energy dependence increased strongly. Understanding how companies depend over these changes of oil prices is essential, especially for countries like Portugal that is highly dependent over this non renewable energy source. This dissertation intends to investigate the existence relationship between oil price changes and the returns of Stock Exchange quoted Portuguese companies. By using a company level analysis, using the model Garch (2,1), which allows the implicit volatility to change through time, we were able to conclude that nearly 20% of these companies are significantly affected by oil, finding also evidence that these effects are asymmetric and that companies are affected in a different way which is dependent on their current situation in the market. Moreover, there exists some differences between economic sectors in the way they are impacted by oil price changes, although not so much significant. The analysis taking into account companies’ size revealed that the higher the company, the higher will be the probability of this to be significantly affected by oil price changes. Results achieved suggest that lagged effects of oil price changes positively increase more Portuguese companies’ returns, in the majority of the cases, by opposition to the current oil price change. Although this study has the advantage to be an analysis at the company level, there are some worth to notice limitations, such as the limited number of companies available which are quoted in the Stock Exchange in Portugal, the shortage of data with respect to some important variables and the existence of companies with a lower movement in the stock market (lack of liquidity)

Supported by an environment that is increasingly immersed in digital transformation, universities are facing important organizational changes in both tangible and intangible structures. Digital transformation isn’t all about technology, there is a human side of the story. Leadership is seen as a key issue in any process of change. However, leaders of professional and knowledge-based institutions, like universities, face special demands. The present article aims to synthesize what has been investigated about leadership in the context of University 4.0. A systematic approach was adopted in conducting the literature review. The main body of the article focuses on illustrating five thematic clusters grounded in the literature and identifying co-citation network of each cluster using bibliometrics. Results demonstrate that this is an emerging theme. This paper is the first attempt to systematically review all research that so far has been made available in the broad field of leadership in University 4.0.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    A critical review

Atherosclerosis may be present in different arterial territories and as a single- or multi-territorial disease. The different phenotypes of atherosclerosis are attributable only in part to acquired cardiovascular risk factors and genetic Mendelian inheritance. miRNAs, which regulate the gene expression at the post-transcriptional level, may also contribute to such heterogeneity. Numerous miRNAs participate in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis by modulating endothelial function, smooth vascular cell function, vascular inflammation, and cholesterol homeostasis in the vessel, among other biological processes. Moreover, miRNAs are present in peripheral blood with high stability and have the potential to be used as non-invasive biomarkers for the diagnosis of atherosclerosis. However, the circulating miRNA profile may vary according to the involved arterial territory, considering that atherosclerosis expression, including the associated molecular phenotype, varies according to the affected arterial territory. In this review, we discuss the specific circulating miRNA profiles associated with atherosclerosis of different arterial territories, the common circulating miRNA profile of stable atherosclerosis irrespective of the involved arterial territory, and the circulating miRNA signature of multi-territorial atherosclerosis. miRNAs may consist of a simple non-invasive method for discriminating atherosclerosis of different arterial sites. The limitations of miRNA profiling for such clinical application are also discussed.publishersversionpublishe

The use of business intelligence (BI) systems by organizations is increasingly considered as an asset, which goal is to provide access to information in a timely manner in order to support the decision-making process. However, in specific cases such as local government organizations, there are very specific challenges. Some of them like privacy rights and applicable law compliance must be carefully observed, making the necessary adaptations of these BI solutions. The developed solution brings some important contributions and represents some advances in the eGovernment context applied to local governments where the information is normally used/stored are not normalized and pre-defined. Being this a big barrier to development of this type of solutions, the developed architecture is prepared to improve the data quality and avoid this type of mistakes. This paper presents an architecture of a BI platform on a local government organization, geared towards the improvement of citizen offered services quality and efficiency maximization, thus contributing for cost reduction to the taxpayer.(undefined

One of the major challenges of today's biotechnology is to be able to obtain the maximum of metabolic information for the holistic interpretation of biological systems. Herein we present a new computational application for gas-chromatography mass spectroscopy automated signal processing, named 'X-Metabolomics', that shows to be a potential framework for dynamic systems as fermentation processes interpretation by compounds and pathways identification and quantification and moreover for new metabolites discovery. Our GC-MS signal processing pipeline is implemented into an X-window interface using Tcl/Tk interface and based on R statistical programming environment for comprehensive statistical computing of results and access to 'Bioconductor' bioinformatics platform under Unix, Linux and MacOS. This approach focuses on the robustness of peak extraction algorithms for further identification, quantification and biological interpretation by multivariate analysis, evolving the following steps: i) peaks extraction; ii) supervised filtering; iii) identification of candidate fragments and removal of possible contaminants; iv) compounds identification/quantification; v) compounds expression and co-expression in time-course; and vi) sample classification and biological interpretation by multivariate analysis. 'X-Metabolomics' can be an useful tool in different fields such as pharmacology, genetics, living cells systems, promising to be innovative and very helpful for new drug discovery and new advances in dynamic systems understanding

Intellectual Capital Change Management in the Construction Industry—The Case of an Inter-Organisational Collaboration

Nowadays, due to the complexity of the relationships with external entities, along with the importance that traditional media and the innovative social media have in creating competitive advantages, it is necessary for companies to collaborate in order to create Intellectual Capital (IC). Although collaboration is crucial to create IC, there is a paucity in literature regarding the effects that a specific type of collaboration may have on the IC of an organisation, specifically a franchising with a mediatic actor. Moreover, literature addressing IC creation and destruction over time is scarce, especially when applied to the construction industry. This paper’s goal is twofold: understanding the longitudinal changes of a construction SME’s Intellectual Capital, regarding its creation and destruction; analysing the impact that a specific inter-organisational collaboration franchising—with a mediatic actor may have on such IC. A single in-depth case study was conducted, allowing to conclude that the actions of an organisation can develop both Intellectual Assets and Intellectual Liabilities. It was also concluded that inter-organisational collaboration, through a franchise with an actor with experience in communication, can generate, in the long term, positive and innovative effects regarding the different IC components, namely the Relational one. More specifically, the paper allowed to ascertain that an organisation’s IC changes over time in a dynamic fashion, i.e., Intellectual Liabilities which emerged before an innovative collaboration can be transformed into Intellectual Assets and create competitive advantages. This paper contributes to stress the importance of managing IC, not only when it is created, but namely in when it can be destroyed, in a context of inter-organisational collaborations applied to a construction SMEinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Semi-subsistence farms in Portugal

    Get PDF
This paper aims to analyze the farm structure in Portugal, the main reasons that explain the duality of the agrarian system between the Southern and Northern regions of the country, and the potential consequences on agricultural development. Besides the farm structure in Portugal as a recurrent issue on the Portuguese literature, the concept of semi-subsistence farms in Portugal was never recognized. This paper tries to overcome this gap on the literature. The methodology used was a univariate statistical analysis, due to the inexistence of more strong information and data. The results confirm the contribution of subsistence farming to household incomes, and social and rural development, with strong development potential due to the macroeconomic situation in Portugal. But concerning that, stronger quantitative analysis and studies are needed. The conclusions suggest that the EU Common Agricultural Policy instruments best suited the response to the specific needs of these subsistence farmers due to the prevalence and importance of small farms in Portugal.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
