    Information-entropic analysis of Korteweg--de Vries solitons in the quark-gluon plasma

    Solitary waves propagation of baryonic density perturbations, ruled by the Korteweg--de Vries equation in a mean-field quark-gluon plasma model, are investigated from the point of view of the theory of information. A recently proposed continuous logarithmic measure of information, called configurational entropy, is used to derive the soliton width, defining the pulse, for which the informational content of the soliton spatial profile is more compressed, in the Shannon's sense.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur

    Non-Associativity in the Clifford Bundle on the Parallelizable Torsion 7-Sphere

    In this paper we discuss generalized properties of non-associativity in Clifford bundles on the 7-sphere S7. Novel and prominent properties inherited from the non-associative structure of the Clifford bundle on S7 are demonstrated. They naturally lead to general transformations of the spinor fields on S7 and have dramatic consequences for the associated Kac-Moody current algebras. All additional properties concerning the non-associative structure in the Clifford bundle on S7 are considered. We further discuss and explore their applications.Comment: 16 page

    Hempelian and Kuhnian approaches in the philosophy of medicine: the Semmelweis case

    Semmelweis?s investigations of puerperal fever are some of the most interesting in the history of medicine. This paper considers Hempel?s (1966) analysis of the Semmelweis case. It argues that this analysis is inadequate and needs to be supplemented by some Kuhnian ideas. Kuhn?s notion of paradigm needs to be modified to apply to medicine in order to take account of the classification schemes involved in medical theorising. However with a suitable modification it provides an explanation of Semmelweis?s failure which is argued to be superior to some of the external reasons often given. Despite this success in applying Kuhn?s ideas to medicine, it is argued that these ideas must be further modified to take account of the fact that medicine is not a natural science but primarily a practice designed to prevent and cure diseases

    Hawking Radiation from Elko Particles Tunnelling across Black Strings Horizon

    We apply the tunnelling method for the emission and absorption of Elko particles in the event horizon of a black string solution. We show that Elko particles are emitted at the expected Hawking temperature from black strings, but with a quite different signature with respect to the Dirac particles. We employ the Hamilton-Jacobi technique to black hole tunnelling, by applying the WKB approximation to the coupled system of Dirac-like equations governing the Elko particle dynamics. As a typical signature, different Elko particles are shown to produce the same standard Hawking temperature for black strings. However we prove that they present the same probability irrespective of outgoing or ingoing the black hole horizon. It provides a typical signature for mass dimension one fermions, that is different from the mass dimension three halves fermions inherent to Dirac particles, as different Dirac spinor fields have distinct inward and outward probability of tunnelling.Comment: 5 pages, notation for the event horizon changed, 4 lines removed, to appear in Europhys.     Characterization of manifolds of constant curvature by spherical curves

    It is known that the so-called rotation minimizing (RM) frames allow for a simple and elegant characterization of geodesic spherical curves in Euclidean, hyperbolic, and spherical spaces through a certain linear equation involving the coefficients that dictate the RM frame motion (da Silva, da Silva in Mediterr J Math 15:70, 2018). Here, we shall prove the converse, i.e., we show that if all geodesic spherical curves on a Riemannian manifold are characterized by a certain linear equation, then all the geodesic spheres with a sufficiently small radius are totally umbilical and, consequently, the given manifold has constant sectional curvature. We also furnish two other characterizations in terms of (i) an inequality involving the mean curvature of a geodesic sphere and the curvature function of their curves and (ii) the vanishing of the total torsion of closed spherical curves in the case of three-dimensional manifolds. Finally, we also show that the same results are valid for semi-Riemannian manifolds of constant sectional curvature.Comment: To appear in Annali di Matematica Pura ed Applicat

Approach: The paper reviews notions of ethics, justice and responsibility. It then uses the framework developed through this review as the basis for an appreciation of the articles that constitute the issue. Value: This article provides an introduction to, and suggests an overarching framework for, this special issue on questions we ask about ethics in a global marketplace. It is also an important reminder to managers and employees who constitute the entities to which “responsibility” is generally attached, that responsibility, ultimately, is irreducible beyond the individual, who cannot simply “follow orders”
