    Conventional discrete transportation network design problem deals with the optimal decision on new link addition, assuming the capacity of each candidate link addition is predetermined and fixed. In this paper, we address a novel yet general discrete network design problem formulation that aims to determine the optimal new link addition and their optimal capacities simultaneously, which answers the questions on whether a new link should be added or not, and if added, what should be the optimal link capacity.     Identification of critical combination of vulnerable links in transportation networks – a global optimisation approach

    This paper presents a global optimisation framework for identifying the most critical combination of vulnerable links in a transportation network. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer non-linear programme with equilibrium constraints, aiming to determine the combination of links whose deterioration would induce the most increase in total travel cost in the network. A global optimisation solution method applying a piecewise linearisation approach and range-reduction technique is developed to solve the model. From the numerical results, it is interesting and counterintuitive to note that the set of most vulnerable links when simultaneous multiple-link failure occurs is not simply the combination of the most vulnerable links with single-link failure, and the links in the critical combination of vulnerable links are not necessarily connected or even in the neighbourhood of each other. The numerical results also show that the ranking of vulnerable links will be significantly affected by certain input parameters

    A reduced integer programming model for the ferry scheduling problem

    We present an integer programming model for the ferry scheduling problem, improving existing models in various ways. In particular, our model has reduced size in terms of the number of variables and constraints compared to existing models by a factor of approximately O(n), where n being the number of ports. The model also handles efficiently load/unload time constraints, crew scheduling and passenger transfers. Experiments using real world data produced high quality solutions in 12 hours using CPLEX 12.4 with a performance guarantee of within 15% of optimality, on average. This establishes that using a general purpose integer programming solver is a viable alternative in solving the ferry scheduling problem of moderate size.Comment: To appear in Public Transpor

    Analysis of road network pattern considering population distribution and central business district.

    This paper proposes a road network growing model with the consideration of population distribution and central business district (CBD) attraction. In the model, the relative neighborhood graph (RNG) is introduced as the connection mechanism to capture the haracteristics of road network topology. The simulation experiment is set up to illustrate the effects of population distribution and CBD attraction on the characteristics of road network. Moreover, several topological attributes of road network is evaluated by using coverage, circuitness, treeness and total length in the experiment. Finally, the suggested model is verified in the simulation of China and Beijing Highway networks

    Interdependence between transportation system and power distribution system: a comprehensive review on models and applications

    The rapidly increasing penetration of electric vehicles in modern metropolises has been witnessed during the past decade, inspired by financial subsidies as well as public awareness of climate change and environment protection. Integrating charging facilities, especially high-power chargers in fast charging stations, into power distribution systems remarkably alters the traditional load flow pattern, and thus imposes great challenges on the operation of distribution network in which controllable resources are rare. On the other hand, provided with appropriate incentives, the energy storage capability of electric vehicle offers a unique opportunity to facilitate the integration of distributed wind and solar power generation into power distribution system. The above trends call for thorough investigation and research on the interdependence between transportation system and power distribution system. This paper conducts a comprehensive survey on this line of research. The basic models of transportation system and power distribution system are introduced, especially the user equilibrium model, which describes the vehicular flow on each road segment and is not familiar to the readers in power system community. The modelling of interdependence across the two systems is highlighted. Taking into account such interdependence, applications ranging from long-term planning to short-term operation are reviewed with emphasis on comparing the description of traffic-power interdependence.
