Organizational Images And Member Identification
We develop a model to explain how images of one's work organization shape the strength of his or her identification with the organization. We focus on two key organizational images: one based on what a member believes is distinctive, central, and enduring about his or her organization and one based on a member's beliefs about what outsiders think about the organization. According to the model, members assess the attractiveness of these images by how well the image preserves the continuity of their self-concept, provides distinctiveness, and enhances self-esteem. The model leads to a number of propositions about how organizational identification affects members' patterns of social interaction.Managemen
The use of satellite data in understanding and predicting convective and large-scale dynamical processes
Mesoscale convective processes and how they affect and interact with mid-latitude cyclones were studied. The ageostrophic and associated vertical motion field was calculated using a highly accurate iterative method of solving the semigeostrophic omega equation. The tendencies for convective destabilization in the 850-750 mb layer due to differential geostrophic and ageostrophic advection and differential moist adiabatic ascent, were found. Extensive horizontal gene transfer in cheese-associated bacteria.
Acquisition of genes through horizontal gene transfer (HGT) allows microbes to rapidly gain new capabilities and adapt to new or changing environments. Identifying widespread HGT regions within multispecies microbiomes can pinpoint the molecular mechanisms that play key roles in microbiome assembly. We sought to identify horizontally transferred genes within a model microbiome, the cheese rind. Comparing 31 newly sequenced and 134 previously sequenced bacterial isolates from cheese rinds, we identified over 200 putative horizontally transferred genomic regions containing 4733 protein coding genes. The largest of these regions are enriched for genes involved in siderophore acquisition, and are widely distributed in cheese rinds in both Europe and the US. These results suggest that HGT is prevalent in cheese rind microbiomes, and that identification of genes that are frequently transferred in a particular environment may provide insight into the selective forces shaping microbial communities
Effective one-component description of two-component Bose-Einstein condensate dynamics
We investigate dynamics in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in the
context of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations and derive results for the
evolution of the total density fluctuations. Using these results, we show how,
in many cases of interest, the dynamics can be accurately described with an
effective one-component Gross-Pitaevskii equation for one of the components,
with the trap and interaction coefficients determined by the relative
differences in the scattering lengths. We discuss the model in various regimes,
where it predicts breathing excitations, and the formation of vector solitons.
An effective nonlinear evolution is predicted for some cases of current
experimental interest. We then apply the model to construct quasi-stationary

Nurse telephone triage for same day appointments in general practice: multiple interrupted time series trial of effect on workload and costs
OBJECTIVE: To compare the workloads of general practitioners and nurses and costs of patient care for nurse telephone triage and standard management of requests for same day appointments in routine primary care. DESIGN: Multiple interrupted time series using sequential introduction of experimental triage system in different sites with repeated measures taken one week in every month for 12 months. SETTING: Three primary care sites in York. Participants: 4685 patients: 1233 in standard management, 3452 in the triage system. All patients requesting same day appointments during study weeks were included in the trial. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Type of consultation (telephone, appointment, or visit), time taken for consultation, presenting complaints, use of services during the month after same day contact, and costs of drugs and same day, follow up, and emergency care. RESULTS: The triage system reduced appointments with general practitioner by 29-44%. Compared with standard management, the triage system had a relative risk (95% confidence interval) of 0.85 (0.72 to 1.00) for home visits, 2.41 (2.08 to 2.80) for telephone care, and 3.79 (3.21 to 4.48) for nurse care. Mean overall time in the triage system was 1.70 minutes longer, but mean general practitioner time was reduced by 2.45 minutes. Routine appointments and nursing time increased, as did out of hours and accident and emergency attendance. Costs did not differ significantly between standard management and triage: mean difference £1.48 more per patient for triage (95% confidence interval -0.19 to 3.15). CONCLUSIONS: Triage reduced the number of same day appointments with general practitioners but resulted in busier routine surgeries, increased nursing time, and a small but significant increase in out of hours and accident and emergency attendance. Consequently, triage does not reduce overall costs per patient for managing same day appointments
Possible quadrupolar nematic phase in the frustrated spin chain LiCuSbO: an NMR investigation
The frustrated one-dimensional (1D) quantum magnet LiCuSbO is one rare
realization of the spin chain model with an easily accessible
saturation field, formerly estimated to 12~T. Exotic multipolar nematic phases
were theoretically predicted in such compounds just below the saturation field,
but without unambiguous experimental observation so far. In this paper we
present extensive experimental research of the compound in the wide temperature
(30mK300K) and field (013.3T) range by muon spin rotation (SR),
Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic susceptibility (SQUID).
SR experiments in zero magnetic field demonstrate the absence of long
range 3D ordering down to 30mK. Together with former heat capacity data [S.E.
Dutton \emph{et al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 187206 (2012)], magnetic
susceptibility measurements suggest short range correlated vector chiral phase
in the field range T. In the intermediate field values (512T), the
system enters in a 3D ordered spin density wave phase with 0.75 per
copper site at lowest temperatures (125mK), estimated by NMR. At still higher
field, the magnetization is found to be saturated above 13T where the spin
lattice relaxation reveals a spin gap estimated to 3.2(2)K. We
narrow down the possibility of observing a multipolar nematic phase to the

Biotic Interactions Shape the Ecological Distributions of Staphylococcus Species.
Many metagenomic sequencing studies have observed the presence of closely related bacterial species or genotypes in the same microbiome. Previous attempts to explain these patterns of microdiversity have focused on the abiotic environment, but few have considered how biotic interactions could drive patterns of microbiome diversity. We dissected the patterns, processes, and mechanisms shaping the ecological distributions of three closely related Staphylococcus species in cheese rind biofilms. Paradoxically, the most abundant species (S. equorum) is the slowest colonizer and weakest competitor based on growth and competition assays in the laboratory. Through in vitro community reconstructions, we determined that biotic interactions with neighboring fungi help resolve this paradox. Species-specific stimulation of the poor competitor by fungi of the genus Scopulariopsis allows S. equorum to dominate communities in vitro as it does in situ Results of comparative genomic and transcriptomic experiments indicate that iron utilization pathways, including a homolog of the S. aureus staphyloferrin B siderophore operon pathway, are potential molecular mechanisms underlying Staphylococcus-Scopulariopsis interactions. Our integrated approach demonstrates that fungi can structure the ecological distributions of closely related bacterial species, and the data highlight the importance of bacterium-fungus interactions in attempts to design and manipulate microbiomes.ImportanceDecades of culture-based studies and more recent metagenomic studies have demonstrated that bacterial species in agriculture, medicine, industry, and nature are unevenly distributed across time and space. The ecological processes and molecular mechanisms that shape these distributions are not well understood because it is challenging to connect in situ patterns of diversity with mechanistic in vitro studies in the laboratory. Using tractable cheese rind biofilms and a focus on coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CNS) species, we demonstrate that fungi can mediate the ecological distributions of closely related bacterial species. One of the Staphylococcus species studied, S. saprophyticus, is a common cause of urinary tract infections. By identifying processes that control the abundance of undesirable CNS species, cheese producers will have more precise control on the safety and quality of their products. More generally, Staphylococcus species frequently co-occur with fungi in mammalian microbiomes, and similar bacterium-fungus interactions may structure bacterial diversity in these systems
Magnetically-controlled velocity selection in a cold atom sample using stimulated Raman transitions
We observe velocity-selective two-photon resonances in a cold atom cloud in
the presence of a magnetic field. We use these resonances to demonstrate a
simple magnetometer with sub-mG resolution. The technique is particularly
useful for zeroing the magnetic field and does not require any additional laser
frequencies than are already used for standard magneto-optical traps. We verify
