Comment on "Spin-1 aggregation model in one dimension"
M. Girardi and W. Figueiredo have proposed a simple model of aggregation in
one dimension to mimic the self-assembly of amphiphiles in aqueous solution
[Phys. Rev. E 62, 8344 (2000)]. We point out that interesting results can be
obtained if a different set of interactions is considered, instead of their

Response of a particle in a one-dimensional lattice to an applied force: Dynamics of the effective mass
We study the behaviour of the expectation value of the acceleration of a
particle in a one-dimensional periodic potential when an external homogeneous
force is suddenly applied. The theory is formulated in terms of modified Bloch
states that include the interband mixing induced by the force. This approach
allows us to understand the behaviour of the wavepacket, which responds with a
mass that is initially the bare mass, and subsequently oscillates around the
value predicted by the effective mass. If Zener tunneling can be neglected, the
expression obtained for the acceleration of the particle is valid over
timescales of the order of a Bloch oscillation, which are of interest for
experiments with cold atoms in optical lattices. We discuss how these
oscillations can be tuned in an optical lattice for experimental detection.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figure
Discards of the beach seine fishery in the central coast of Portugal.
The beach seine fishery is performed regularly along the Portuguese coast in shallow water sandy areas. The catches and discards of this fishery were studied from March until November 1999, on the coast south of Lisbon. Fishing operations were monitored weekly and estimates of the weight of catches and discards per species were determined for each haul. A total of 60 fish species was identified in the catches but Scomber japonicus, Trachurus trachurus and Diplodus bellottii represented approximately 90% of the catches. For most of the species the percentage of discarded fishwas extremely high (ca. 100%). Evaluation of semantic web ontologies for modelling art collections

The need for organising, sharing and digitally processing Cultural Heritage (CH) information has led to the development of formal knowledge representation models (ontologies) for the CH domain. Based on RDF and OWL, the standard data model and ontology language of the Semantic Web, ontologies such as CIDOC-CRM, the Europeana Data Model and VRA, offer enhanced representation capabilities, but also support for inference, querying and interlinking through the Web. This paper presents the results of a small-scale evaluation of the three most commonly used CH ontologies, with respect to their capacity to fulfil the data modelling requirements of art collections
Existence of Solutions for a Wave Equation with Non-monotone Nonlinearity and a Small Parameter
We provide sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions to a semilinear wave equation with non-monotone nonlinearity involving a small parameter. Our results are based on the analysis of a an operator that characterizes the projection onto the kernel of the wave operator subject to periodic-Dirichlet boundary conditions. Such a kernel is infinite dimensional which makes standard compactness arguments inapplicable
Influence of temperament on performance and carcass quality of commercial Brahman steers in a Colombian tropical grazing system
Temperament is defined as individual behavioral responses to potentially fear-eliciting or challenging situations related to human presence and handling. A total of 190 steers of commercial Zebu Brahman (Bos indicus) were used in this study, selected when they were between 10 and 11 months of age, fattened for 24 months (720 days) and slaughtered between 34 and 35 months of age. Using a temperament index (based on two tests: chute and exit score), animals were classified as calm, restless, or nervous. In general, calm animals had a longer carcass, a higher slaughter and fasting weight, and a normal pH24 (<5.7). However, carcass yield was significantly higher in nervous than in restless animals, but did not differ from that of calm steers. It is important to note that these results were obtained under experimental conditions, therefore, effects could have a greater impact on carcass quality under commercial conditions. © 2022 The Author
The Unique Origin of Colors of Armchair Carbon Nanotubes
The colors of suspended metallic colloidal particles are determined by their
size-dependent plasma resonance, while those of semiconducting colloidal
particles are determined by their size-dependent band gap. Here, we present a
novel case for armchair carbon nanotubes, suspended in aqueous medium, for
which the color depends on their size-dependent excitonic resonance, even
though the individual particles are metallic. We observe distinct colors of a
series of armchair-enriched nanotube suspensions, highlighting the unique
