In situ X-ray diffraction of CaO based CO2 sorbents

In situ X-ray diffraction coupled with Rietveld refinement has been used to study CO2 capture by CaO, Ca(OH)2 and partially hydrated CaO, as a function of temperature. Phase quantification by Rietveld refinement was performed to monitor the conversion to CaCO3 and the results were compared to those derived using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that Ca(OH)2 converted directly to 100% CaCO3 without the formation of a CaO intermediate, at ca. 600 °C. Both pure CaO and partially hydrated CaO (33.6 wt% Ca(OH)2) reached the same capture capacity, containing approximately 65 wt% CaCO3 at 800 °C. It was possible to provide direct evidence of the capture mechanism. The stresses in the Ca(OH)2 phase of the partially hydrated CaO were found to be more than 20 times higher than its strength, leading to disintegration and the generation of nano-sized crystallites. The crystallite size determined using diffraction (75 × 16 nm) was in good agreement with the average crystallite size observed using TEM (of 83 × 16 nm). Christian Faith and Struggles for Justice (A Reply to Metaxas)

As part of the EKU Chautauqua Lecture Series, author Eric Metaxas came to Central Kentucky to speak about his newly published book, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. The book garnered glowing reviews in some circles and continued to sell briskly after reaching the top slot on the New York Times bestseller list in September 2011. Engaging and openly evangelical, Metaxas tells a compelling story of the life and ultimate end of the German pastor who opposed the Nazi regime, joined a plot to kill Hitler and paid with his life. Audiences leave his presentations as if under a spell. In the book as well as his public presentations on it, Metaxas argues that something about the slain pastor’s faith set him apart from the millions of German Christians who put their Christianity in the direct service of the Third Reich or who complied passively while their government unleashed horrifying brutality. Though deeply steeped in the Christian tradition, Germans’ religion seems utterly to have failed them when they needed it most. Only a small remnant of believers, with Bonhoeffer a leader among them, nurtured a faith that opposed evil, rather than abetted and facilitated it. Metaxas’ thesis thus promises to speak to central and compelling human dilemmas: what mechanism so twists an entire society’s moral compass that it pursues evil as a national goal

A homological interpretation of the transverse quiver Grassmannians

In recent articles, the investigation of atomic bases in cluster algebras associated to affine quivers led the second-named author to introduce a variety called transverse quiver Grassmannian and the first-named and third-named authors to consider the smooth loci of quiver Grassmannians. In this paper, we prove that, for any affine quiver Q, the transverse quiver Grassmannian of an indecomposable representation M is the set of points N in the quiver Grassmannian of M such that Ext^1(N,M/N)=0. Electromagnetic analysis of arbitrarily shaped pinched carpets

We derive the expressions for the anisotropic heterogeneous tensors of permittivity and perme- ability associated with two-dimensional and three-dimensional carpets of an arbitrary shape. In the former case, we map a segment onto smooth curves whereas in the latter case we map a non convex region of the plane onto smooth surfaces. Discovery of dumbbell-shaped Cs*He_n exciplexes in solid He 4

We have observed several new spectral features in the fluorescence of cesium atoms implanted in the hcp phase of solid helium following laser excitation to the 6$^{2}$P states. Based on calculations of the emission spectra using semiempirical Cs-He pair potentials the newly discovered lines can be assigned to the decay of specific Cs*He$_{n}$ exciplexes: an apple-shaped Cs$(A\Pi _{3/2})$He$_{2}$ and a dumbbell-shaped Cs$(A\Pi_{1/2})$He$_{n}$ exciplex with a well defined number $n$ of bound helium atoms. While the former has been observed in other enviroments, it was commonly believed that exciplexes with $n>2$ might not exist. The calculations suggest Cs$(A\Pi_{1/2})$He$_{6}$ to be the most probable candidate for that exciplex, in which the helium atoms are arranged on a ring around the waist of the dumbbell shaped electronic density distribution of the cesium atom.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Discussion of the exponential increase in environmental toxicological information and an approach for organizing and using the information was presented by Lu and Wassom.1 A user\u27s guide to the Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS) was published by NIOSH2 that defines the record layouts and describes the types of data contained in the computer tape version of the 1984 Edition of the RTECS.3 A text summarizing information on approximately 800 toxic chemicals was edited by Sittig.4 Milestone publications concerning fundamentals of toxicology with environmental applications included the works of Gentile,5 Ashby,6 Mortel mans,7 Thacker,8 and Ruppert.9 Brusick and Auletta10 discussed the developmental status of bioassays in genetic toxicology reviewed by the U. Probing vortices in 4He nanodroplets

We present static and dynamical properties of linear vortices in 4He droplets obtained from Density Functional calculations. By comparing the adsorption properties of different atomic impurities embedded in pure droplets and in droplets where a quantized vortex has been created, we suggest that Ca atoms should be the dopant of choice to detect vortices by means of spectroscopic experiments.Comment: Typeset using Revtex4, 4 pages and 2 Postscript file
