Dynamics of a Pair of Interacting Spins Coupled to an Environmental Sea
We solve for the dynamics of a pair of spins, coupled to each other and also
to an environmental sea of oscillators. The environment mediates an indirect
interaction between the spins, causing both mutual coherence effects and
dissipation. This model describes a wide variety of physical systems, ranging
from 2 coupled microscopic systems (eg., magnetic impurities, bromophores,
etc), to 2 coupled macroscopic quantum systems. We obtain analytic results for
3 regimes, viz., (i) The locked regime, where the 2 spins lock together; (ii)
The correlated relaxation regime (mutually correlated incoherent relaxation);
and (iii) The mutual coherence regime, with correlated damped oscillations.

Broadband, unpolarized repumping and clearout light sources for Sr single-ion clocks
Future transportable optical clocks require compact and reliable light
sources. Here, broadband, unpolarized repumper and state clearout sources for
Sr+ single-ion optical clocks are reported. These turn-key devices require no
frequency stabilization nor external modulators. They are fiber based,
inexpensive, and compact. Key characteristics for clock operation are
presented, including optical spectra, induced light shifts and required
extinction ratios. Tests with an operating single-ion standard show a clearout
efficiency of 100%. Compared to a laser-based repumper, the achievable
fluorescence rates for ion detection are a few tens of per cent lower. The
resulting ion kinetic temperature is 1--1.5 mK, near the Doppler limit of the
ion system. Similar repumper light sources could be made for Ca+ (866 nm) and
Ba+ (650 nm) using semiconductor gain media.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

Dexamethasone Attenuates Hyperexcitability Provoked by Experimental Febrile Status Epilepticus.
The role of neuroinflammation in the mechanisms of epilepsy development is important because inflammatory mediators provide tractable targets for intervention. Inflammation is intrinsically involved in the generation of childhood febrile seizures (FSs), and prolonged FS [febrile status epilepticus (FSE)] precedes a large proportion of adult cases of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). As TLE is often refractory to therapy and is associated with serious cognitive and emotional problems, we investigated whether its development can be prevented using anti-inflammatory strategies. Using an immature rat model of FSE [experimental FSE (eFSE)], we administered dexamethasone (DEX), a broad anti-inflammatory agent, over 3 d following eFSE. We assessed eFSE-provoked hippocampal network hyperexcitability by quantifying the presence, frequency, and duration of hippocampal spike series, as these precede and herald the development of TLE-like epilepsy. We tested whether eFSE provoked hippocampal microgliosis, astrocytosis, and proinflammatory cytokine production in male and female rats and investigated blood-brain barrier (BBB) breaches as a potential contributor. We then evaluated whether DEX attenuated these eFSE sequelae. Spike series were not observed in control rats given vehicle or DEX, but occurred in 41.6% of eFSE-vehicle rats, associated with BBB leakage and elevated hippocampal cytokines. eFSE did not induce astrocytosis or microgliosis but provoked BBB disruption in 60% of animals. DEX significantly reduced spike series prevalence (to 7.6%) and frequency, and abrogated eFSE-induced cytokine production and BBB leakage (to 20%). These findings suggest that a short, postinsult intervention with a clinically available anti-inflammatory agent potently attenuates epilepsy-predicting hippocampal hyperexcitability, potentially by minimizing BBB disruption and related neuroinflammation
Propagation dynamics on networks featuring complex topologies
Analytical description of propagation phenomena on random networks has
flourished in recent years, yet more complex systems have mainly been studied
through numerical means. In this paper, a mean-field description is used to
coherently couple the dynamics of the network elements (nodes, vertices,
individuals...) on the one hand and their recurrent topological patterns
(subgraphs, groups...) on the other hand. In a SIS model of epidemic spread on
social networks with community structure, this approach yields a set of ODEs
for the time evolution of the system, as well as analytical solutions for the
epidemic threshold and equilibria. The results obtained are in good agreement
with numerical simulations and reproduce random networks behavior in the
appropriate limits which highlights the influence of topology on the processes.
Finally, it is demonstrated that our model predicts higher epidemic thresholds
for clustered structures than for equivalent random topologies in the case of

Experiments of Interfacial Roughening in Hele-Shaw Flows with Weak Quenched Disorder
We have studied the kinetic roughening of an oil--air interface in a forced
imbibition experiment in a horizontal Hele--Shaw cell with quenched disorder.
Different disorder configurations, characterized by their persistence length in
the direction of growth, have been explored by varying the average interface
velocity v and the gap spacing b. Through the analysis of the rms width as a
function of time, we have measured a growth exponent beta ~= 0.5 that is almost
independent of the experimental parameters. The analysis of the roughness
exponent alpha through the power spectrum have shown different behaviors at
short (alpha_1) and long (alpha_2) length scales, separated by a crossover
wavenumber q_c. The values of the measured roughness exponents depend on
experimental parameters, but at large velocities we obtain alpha_1 ~= 1.3
independently of the disorder configuration. The dependence of the crossover
wavenumber with the experimental parameters has also been investigated,
measuring q_c ~ v^{0.47} for the shortest persistence length, in agreement with

Interface Depinning in the Absence of External Driving Force
We study the pinning-depinning phase transition of interfaces in the quenched
Kardar-Parisi-Zhang model as the external driving force goes towards zero.
For a fixed value of the driving force we induce depinning by increasing the
nonlinear term coefficient , which is related to lateral growth, up to
a critical threshold. We focus on the case in which there is no external force
applied (F=0) and find that, contrary to a simple scaling prediction, there is
a finite value of that makes the interface to become depinned. The
critical exponents at the transition are consistent with directed percolation
depinning. Our results are relevant for paper wetting experiments, in which an

Interface dynamics and kinetic roughening in fractals
We consider the dynamics and kinetic roughening of single-valued interfaces in two-dimensional fractal media. Assuming that the local height difference distribution function of the fronts obeys LevĂœ statistics with a well-defined power-law decay exponent, we derive analytic expressions for the local scaling exponents. We also show that the kinetic roughening of the interfaces displays anomalous scaling and multiscaling in the relevant correlation functions. For invasion percolation models, the exponents can be obtained from the fractal geometry of percolation clusters. Our predictions are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.Peer reviewe
