An economic model for water allocation in North Eastern Spain

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to construct and apply a model for the allocation of water between two competing users, namely irrigation and hydropower. The model is applied in a case study of a specific water system located in North Eastern Spain. Starting with an irrigation-hydropower joint income function, we develop a constrained maximisation process that takes into account the environmental, institutional and actual priority of the water rights. The resulting solution can be useful as a guide for potential bargains between users. Furthermore, we evaluate the results for different supply (precipitation) and water allotments (increase in irrigated land). The results show that there are sufficient incentives so as to reach agreements that lead to improvements in a Pareto sense without side payments.Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, Water Economics, Bargaining, Cooperative Games

Measuring complexity in a business cycle

The purpose of this paper is to study the dynamical behavior of a family of two- dimensional nonlinear maps associated to an economic model. Our objective is to measure the complexity of the system using techniques of symbolic dynamics in order to compute the topological entropy. The analysis of the variation of this im- portant topological invariant with the parameters of the system, allows us to distin- guish different chaotic scenarios. Finally, we use a another topological invariant to distinguish isentropic dynamics and we exhibit numerical results about maps with the same topological entropy. This work provides an illustration of how our under- standing of higher dimensional economic models can be enhanced by the theory of dynamical systems

    Rheology of fractal networks

We model the cytoskeleton as a fractal network by identifying each segment with a simple Kelvin-Voigt element, with a well defined equilibrium length. The final structure retains the elastic characteristics of a solid or a gel, which may support stress, without relaxing. By considering a very simple regular self-similar structure of segments in series and in parallel, in 1, 2 or 3 dimensions, we are able to express the viscoelasticity of the network as an effective generalised Kelvin-Voigt model with a power law spectrum of retardation times, Lτα\cal L\sim\tau^{\alpha}. We relate the parameter α\alpha with the fractal dimension of the gel. In some regimes (0<α<10<\alpha<1), we recover the weak power law behaviours of the elastic and viscous moduli with the angular frequencies, GGwαG'\sim G''\sim w^\alpha, that occur in a variety of soft materials, including living cells. In other regimes, we find different power laws for GG' and GG''.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Selection of Software Product Line Implementation Components Using Recommender Systems: An Application to Wordpress

    Get PDF
In software products line (SPL), there may be features which can be implemented by different components, which means there are several implementations for the same feature. In this context, the selection of the best components set to implement a given configuration is a challenging task due to the high number of combinations and options which could be selected. In certain scenarios, it is possible to find information associated with the components which could help in this selection task, such as user ratings. In this paper, we introduce a component-based recommender system, called (REcommender System that suggests implementation Components from selecteD fEatures), which uses information associated with the implementation components to make recommendations in the domain of the SPL configuration. We also provide a RESDEC reference implementation that supports collaborative-based and content-based filtering algorithms to recommend (i.e., implementation components) regarding WordPress-based websites configuration. The empirical results, on a knowledge base with 680 plugins and 187 000 ratings by 116 000 users, show promising results. Concretely, this indicates that it is possible to guide the user throughout the implementation components selection with a margin of error smaller than 13% according to our evaluation.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad RTI2018-101204-B-C22Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2014-55894-C2-1-RMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2017-88209-C2-2-RMinisterio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad MCIU-AEI TIN2017-90644-RED
