    Milling of the Phosphate Rock Flotation Circuit Circulating Load Aiming Production Increase and Iron Content Reduction in the Final Concentrate

    Phosphorus has its main application in the production of phosphoric acid, being the apatite series its main ore. The Brazilian main phosphorus reserves are igneous, as is the case of Catalão alkaline dome, were Copebras/CMOC International has operations. The content of P2O5 in the ROM has been reduced over the years and, as a consequence, the content of the contaminants in the concentrate, produced by flotation, which enhances the difficulty in the phosphoric acid production. Only traces of arsenic, iron, and heavy metals can be present in high-purity phosphoric acid. The circulating load of the Copebras’ phosphate rock flotation circuit was submitted to bench scale flotation tests with addition of a milling step were carried out in order to increase the recovery of P2O5 and the reduction of the Fe2O3 content to values below 5%. Samples were collected from the flow composed by the scavenger concentrate and cleaner tail, with d95 \u3c208 \u3eμm and average content of 26.2% of P2O5 and 13% of Fe2O3 (6% hematite, 5% goethite, 1% magnetite, and 1% ilmenite) and comminuted in a pilot pant rod mill. Three samples with different d95 (2O3 content (for the sample with d95 \u3c150 \u3eμm). The industrial implementation of a milling stage of the flotation circulation load and a subsequent flotation of this material has the potential to increase the overall process efficiency by approximately 5.5%, resulting in a production increase of 62,000 tons/year of phosphate rock concentrate, with higher quality than the one currently produced. The phosphate rock flotation tailings feeds a niobium processing plant, a co-product of extreme importance due to its economic value. The proposed circuit increased the niobium liberation degree and its content in the produced tailings, which will probably lead to a higher recovery of the same

    Evaluation of the patient with temporomandibular dysfunction : what are the steps to arrive at a correct diagnosis?

    Temporomandibular disorders are heterogeneous group of disorders involving the temporomandibular joint, masticatory muscles and associated structures. With a multifactorial origin, usually the patient with mandibular temporomandibular disorder reports multiple complaints, associated or not to comorbidities and non-repairing sleep. Anamnesis directed to the correct diagnosis is fundamental for the elaboration of a successful therapy. The diagnostic process should be able to categorize the pain as well as identify the involved tissues in addition to pointing out the specific source of pain within that tissue system. The steps to arrive at a correct diagnosis should cover: anamnesis, clinical evaluation for temporomandibular joint, the clinical examination through inspection of the cranial nerves, intra-oral evaluation and musculoskeletal examination, imaging tests, anesthetic block diagnosis, laboratory tests and evaluation of sleep pattern. This process begins in the clinical history, presence or not of associated comorbidities, sleep pattern and other factors that may somehow contribute to the patient’s clinic.     Immune Modulation in Primary Vaccinia virus Zoonotic Human Infections

    In 2010, the WHO celebrated the 30th anniversary of the smallpox eradication. Ironically, infections caused by viruses related to smallpox are being increasingly reported worldwide, including Monkeypox, Cowpox, and Vaccinia virus (VACV). Little is known about the human immunological responses elicited during acute infections caused by orthopoxviruses. We have followed VACV zoonotic outbreaks taking place in Brazil and analyzed cellular immune responses in patients acutely infected by VACV. Results indicated that these patients show a biased immune modulation when compared to noninfected controls. Amounts of B cells are low and less activated in infected patients. Although present, T CD4+ cells are also less activated when compared to noninfected individuals, and so are monocytes/macrophages. Similar results were obtained when Balb/C mice were experimentally infected with a VACV sample isolated during the zoonotic outbreaks. Taking together, the data suggest that zoonotic VACVs modulate specific immune cell compartments during an acute infection in humans

    Circulation of Different Lineages of Dengue Virus 2, Genotype American/Asian in Brazil: Dynamics and Molecular and Phylogenetic Characterization

    The American/Asian genotype of Dengue virus type 2 (DENV-2) was introduced into the Americas in the 80′s. Although there is no data showing when this genotype was first introduced into Brazil, it was first detected in Brazil in 1990. After which the virus spread throughout the country and major epidemics occurred in 1998, 2007/08 and 2010. In this study we sequenced 12 DENV-2 genomes obtained from serum samples of patients with dengue fever residing in São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo (SJRP/SP), Brazil, in 2008. The whole open reading frame or envelope sequences were used to perform phylogenetic, phylogeographic and evolutionary analyses. Isolates from SJRP/SP were grouped within one lineage (BR3) close to isolates from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Isolates from SJRP were probably introduced there at least in 2007, prior to its detection in the 2008 outbreak. DENV-2 circulation in Brazil is characterized by the introduction, displacement and circulation of three well-defined lineages in different times, most probably from the Caribbean. Thirty-seven unique amino acid substitutions were observed among the lineages, including seven amino acid differences in domains I to III of the envelope protein. Moreover, we dated here, for the first time, the introduction of American/Asian genotype into Brazil (lineage BR1) to 1988/89, followed by the introduction of lineages BR2 (1998–2000) and BR3 (2003–05). Our results show a delay between the introduction and detection of DENV-2 lineages in Brazil, reinforcing the importance and need for surveillance programs to detect and trace the evolution of these viruses.
