This study describes some of the major physical and emotional occupational needs of menopausal women, and the direct impact this has on their relationships and overall well-being. The primary objective of this research project was to describe the life experiences of menopausal women and how various stressors affected their emotional, physical, and relational occupations. A descriptive grounded theory method was used to explore the stressors, their meanings, and the women’s unique perspectives of their menopausal experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and then coded and analyzed into key categories. From this information, specific themes were formulated, resulting in an emergent grounded theory. The four themes that emerged from the data were the: physical manifestations of menopause; emotional manifestations of menopause; external contributing factors; and strategies to cope with menopausal challenges. These major themes provided a more in-depth understanding of menopausal women’s perspectives, their meanings, and key occupations. A secondary objective of this study was to disseminate information through eventual publications and presentations to encourage occupational therapists to design and implement intervention strategies to address some of the key occupational struggles associated with menopause. The occupational needs of menopausal women need to be studied further to potentially develop effective intervention strategies for assisting them in dealing with the challenges and changes associated with menopause. The field of occupational therapy is perfectly positioned to be a leader in promoting healthy occupations and lifestyles for these women. This can be accomplished through providing relevant preventative and community-based programming

Decolonising the Waters: Interspecies Encounters Between Sharks and Humans

    Get PDF
Often portrayed as ‘man–eaters’, sharks are one of the most maligned apex species on earth. Media representation has fuelled public imagination, perpetuating fear and negative stereotypes of sharks and hysteria around human-shark interactions; whilst government initiatives such as beach netting and drum-lines target sharks for elimination. This interdisciplinary article, written from the points of view of environmental science and cultural studies, proposes humans as simply another species when entering the ocean, presenting a decolonising shift in paradigm that supports an interspecies ethics of engagement in understanding shark-human interactions. The shifting environmental, political, social and cultural realities of shark-human interactions are examined from the point of view of an endangered species that is hunted by humans in the pursuit of making beaches ‘safe’ for human leisure activities. The human ‘right to leisure’ enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) raises philosophical and ethical implications in respect of human rights taking precedence over a species’ right to live in its environment. The article builds upon philosophical debates in environmental ethics, offering a point of cultural recognition of the profound imbalance that is being imposed upon Nature. The article proposes a shift in approaches to human attitudes and uses of the ocean, decentralizing the anthropocentric, reinstating the ecological kinship of species

The Impact of Race on Healthcare Coverage for Women in Louisiana and Mississippi

    Get PDF
It is crucial to confront the problem of health inequity that Black women are experiencing. Black women have a higher risk of pregnancy-related complications and experience worse outcomes in cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, and mental health. Even with the Affordable Care Act, Black women still may not have access to affordable health insurance. This study examines the impact of race on healthcare coverage for women in Louisiana, which expanded Medicaid, and Mississippi, which did not. The study uses a quasi-experimental analysis to compare insurance coverage across states using publicly available data from the 2010 and 2021 American Community Survey. A chi-squared test determined a significant correlation between race and insurance type in both states. Insurance coverage for Black women increased in Louisiana. Women in Mississippi made slight gains even without Medicaid expansion. Despite these gains, racial disparity among women persists. Policymakers should strive for affordable healthcare for all women, regardless of race and geography.Published By: Blue Eyes Intelligence Engineering and Sciences Publication (BEIESP) © Copyright: All rights reserved
