    Investigating Transnational Collaboration of Faculty Development and Learning: An Argument for Making Learning Culturally Relevant

    Professional development offered to higher education faculty is meant to enhance pedagogy and improve practice. Inspired by a transnational partnership in Southeast Asia, this study aimed to discover how teacher education faculty perceived faculty development offered to them by university partnership colleagues from the United States. Survey findings indicate that certain faculty development strategies improved teaching and assessment practices and enhanced self-reflection. However, evidence also showed some negative faculty perceptions in relation to the US partner’s methodologies, and qualitative responses indicated a lack of relevancy to the Southeastern Asia context. Furthermore, negative correlations were found between faculty development workshops and teacher education faculty teaching subject area endorsement content and their praxis. Very little has been written on the impact of teacher educator professional development offered by transnational academic partnerships. Universities involved as transnational partners must be flexible, culturally sensitive and determine together areas of priority and relevance as a definition of success for partnership effectiveness

    The energetics of fish growth and how it constrains food-web trophic structure

Here we use a first‐principles theoretical model to characterise the energetics of fish growth at distinct ontogenetic stages and in distinct thermal regimes. Empirically, we show that the mass scaling of growth rates follows that of metabolic rate, and is somewhat steeper at earlier ontogenetic stages. We also demonstrate that the cost of growth, Em, varies substantially among fishes, and that it may increase with temperature, trophic level and level of activity. Theoretically, we show that Em is a primary determinant of the efficiency of energy transfer across trophic levels, and that energy is transferred more efficiently between trophic levels if the prey are young and sedentary. Overall, our study demonstrates the importance of characterising the energetics of individual growth in order to understand constraints on the structure of food webs and ecosystems.Macquarie UniversityCentre for Geometric Biology at Monash Universit

This research deals with the following aims: (1) describing the context of Daughter of China, (2) explaining the criticism of the author against violation of human rights, (3) describing the author’s evangelical mission. The qualitative research is outlined by the descriptive method. The writer of the thesis collected and categorized the data obtained. The first step was exposing the context of United States of America and People’s Republic of China Society at the end of the twentieth century. Then it was followed by the analysis of the author’s criticism against human right violation and the author’s evangelical mission. The result of this research are as follows: (1) there was correlation between author’s social background and intention and the social context of People’s Republic of China and United States of America, (2) author’s criticism about human rights violation can be categorized into upper class intimidation, social disparity, the rigid government rules which consist of One Child Policy and loyalist communist obligation, gender inequality which consist of abandoned baby girl and attitude toward girls’ education, starvation of children’s orphanage, the limitation of religious freedom, and the peasants’ obligation to the government, (3) The evangelical mission conveyed by the author which had been identified was based on the following principals: (1) faithful, (2) loving and confident, (3) tolerant and respectability, (4) recognizing others, (5) religious freedom, (6) peace, (7) exemplification, and (8) dialogu

    “To glisten with nectar”—to allude to the title of the artists’ book associated with this project — conjures up an image of moisture-laden, seductive abundance, like a carpet of winter snow shimmering in sunlight. However, it is not sunlight that informs this project, but the hours of darkness on the subantarctic islands. Plant evolutionary biologist Janice Lord studies the insects that visit the megaherbs endemic to this region during the night and investigates their prospects as plant pollinators. Megaherbs, with their large leaves and brightly coloured flowers, are a group of herbaceous perennial wildflowers that have adapted to survive the extreme weather conditions on the islands. An insect of particular interest to Lord is the nocturnal Campbell Island wētā, Notoplectron campbellensis, belonging to the orthopteran family Rhaphidophoridae that includes the cave wētā, an insect endemic to New Zealand

    The Impact of Work-Study Participation on the Career Readiness of Undergraduates

    The Federal Work-Study (FWS) program is an integral part of the federal financial aid plan in the United State since 1964 providing employment opportunities, financial assistance, and opportunities to improve career readiness to over 675,000 students annually. However, little investigation has been completed into the effects of participating in FWS in terms of either program effectiveness or as an effectiveness as a career development program. Previous research lacks consistent findings and focuses on academic outcomes, ignoring development aspects as well as the potential reframing of the program as a high-impact practice. This study assesses the career readiness of FWS eligible students, utilizing a pre-post test control group design with a longitudinal t-test assessment of measured outcomes at two time points as well as an analysis of longitudinal growth. Descriptive analysis found statistically significant differences in career readiness growth for FWS participants across all demographic groups
