    What is dual language education?

    ArticleRecently, the U.S. Congress made a bipartisan request for a national commission to study the state of language education in the United States. After an era of declining availability of foreign language education for the general public and fewer bilingual programs for children from immigrant families, this kind of request may mark an important shift in thinking about the importance of multilingualism and related education initiatives. This changing discourse is coming not only from our leaders, but also from local policymakers and community members. From Delaware to North Carolina to Utah, there has been exponential growth of dual language (DL) education programs since the 1990s. But what exactly are dual language programs? And what are the promises and possibilities of this unique model of education?     Reexamining Citizenship: Best Practices of St. Louis Spanish Immersion Schools

    Presentation made at Latinos in the Heartland (8th : 2010 : St. Louis, Mo.) and published in the annual conference proceedings.When introducing the concepts of citizenship in our schools, how an American citizen looks, speaks, and thinks is often presented in assumptions and stereotypes. As the demographics of the nation have shifted, these stereotypes sometimes remain the same and the new reality ignored. How can and should we teach our young children about citizenship? How are language immersion schools in particular developing global citizens? According to National Migration information, (Terrazas and Batalova 2008) in 2007, 22.9 percent of school-age children had at least one immigrant parent, 47.5 percent of which reported their background to be Hispanic or Latino. In this paper, we discuss two educational opportunities in the St. Louis area that build on the strengths of the Hispanic/Latino community and its primary language of Spanish. Casa de Niños is a preschool program built on the Montessori philosophy that primarily serves children through age 5. The St. Louis Language Immersion Schools, a nonprofit organization (http://sllis. org), is dedicated to supporting the development of a network of charter schools in the area. They are set to open a Spanish immersion school for K-1st grade in August 2009 and will be using the Primary Years International Baccalaureate program in order to promote "international mindedness" in their students (http://www.ibo.org). Specifically, SLLIS' mission is "to position all children for success in local and global economies through holistic, intellectually inspiring language immersion programs," in essence, to create global citizens. The central vision of these language immersion schools, then, is to provide both the opportunity to learn in another language and about other cultures and languages. This presentation will explain how these educational organizations work to develop language and citizenship capacities. In particular, we will explain in detail the planned service-learning community research project all SLLIS students will complete by the end of fifth grade. We will also provide best practices for addressing issues of culture and language in immersion settings designed for young children. Finally, we will discuss with the group the challenges and opportunities of designing these sorts of programs in areas of new immigration, such as many towns and small cities across the Midwest

    Developing Inclusive Multilingual Family Literacy Projects

    "October 2018""Our Multilingual Family Literacy Project was designed in collaboration with a language immersion school in the Midwest that we call the Spanish Immersion Elementary School (SIES). At the time of our partnership, SIES was a one-way or foreign-language immersion school serving kindergarten to fifth grades. Providing the majority of instruction in Spanish through second grade (at which point students attended an English Language Arts class each day), SIES was designed primarily for native English speakers to learn and study their content material in Spanish. However, with a diverse population that included many native Spanish speakers as well as African American youth, there was not one dominant home language across the student body (see Figure 1). The school was rich in language varieties and cultural diversity. Ultimately, SIES aimed to graduate biliterate students with academic proficiency in Spanish and English, and they wanted to develop a family literacy project that honored and built upon families’ backgrounds and languages. In turn, we worked with SIES to develop a Multilingual Family Literacy Project, which included one major introductory event for the entire school and a series of workshops for a small number of families.     Impact of Austria's 2009 trans fatty acids regulation on all-cause, cardiovascular and coronary heart disease mortality

    Background: Unhealthy diet, especially consumption of trans fatty acids (TFAs), is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), a leading cause of death in Austria. In 2009, Austria introduced a law regulating the content of TFAs in foods. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the TFA regulation on CVD-related outcomes.Methods: The study evaluated the TFA regulation as an intervention in a natural experiment. Two study periods were assessed: pre-intervention (1995-2009) and post-intervention (2010-14). The study compared the age-standardized death rates per 100 000 population for CVD outcomes with those of a 'synthetic' international comparator population, created from data of OECD countries where TFA regulation has not been implemented, but where the population is otherwise comparable.Results: There was a continuous decrease in CVD-related mortality throughout the study period in both the synthetic international comparator population, as well as in the adult Austrian population, with no significant change in this trend observed as an effect of TFA regulation.Conclusions: Whilst the results are counterintuitive, given the established link between TFA consumption and an increased risk of CVD, there are many possible explanations: high prevalence of tobacco smoking, changes in TFA content in foods due to international guidance as opposed to formal regulation and a beneficial impact of TFA regulation on sub-groups of the population that might not be detected with nationally aggregated data. However, reduction in TFAs should still be considered an important part of risk factor reduction for CVD and other non-communicable diseases

    Mit der Begleitevaluation der arbeitsmarktpolitischen Integrationsmaßnahmen fĂŒr GeflĂŒchtete sollen wissenschaftlich fundierte Erkenntnisse ĂŒber die Inanspruchnahme, Umsetzung und Wirkungen der wesentlichen Instrumente der aktiven Arbeitsmarktpolitik im SGB II und SGB III zur Förderung der Integration von GeflĂŒchteten in Ausbildung und Arbeit gewonnen werden. Dabei werden auch Kontextfaktoren wie z. B. die regionalen Rahmenbedingungen sowie die Bedeutung der Sprachförderung in den Blick genommen. ZielgrĂ¶ĂŸen sind neben Fortschritten auf dem Weg in Ausbildung und Arbeit auch Fortschritte bei Dimensionen sozialer Teilhabe, die gute FrĂŒhindikatoren fĂŒr eine erst spĂ€ter erfolgende Arbeitsmarktintegration von GeflĂŒchteten darstellen.     Pattern recognition receptors as potential therapeutic targets in inflammatory rheumatic disease

    The pattern recognition receptors of the innate immune system are part of the first line of defence against pathogens. However, they also have the ability to respond to danger signals that are frequently elevated during tissue damage and at sites of inflammation. Inadvertent activation of pattern recognition receptors has been proposed to contribute to the pathogenesis of many conditions including inflammatory rheumatic diseases. Prolonged inflammation most often results in pain and damage to tissues. In particular, the Toll-like receptors and nucleotide-binding oligomerisation domain-like receptors that form inflammasomes have been postulated as key contributors to the inflammation observed in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout and systemic lupus erythematosus. As such, there is increasing interest in targeting these receptors for therapeutic treatment in the clinic. Here the role of pattern recognition receptors in the pathogenesis of these diseases is discussed, with an update on the development of interventions to modulate the activity of these potential therapeutic targets

    Parent involvement in schools is often developed through one-way, deficit-oriented relationships, where information flows from schools to families and parents are perceived to lack some capacity or knowledge. However, little is known about the conditions facing Spanish-speaking families at Spanish language immersion schools, which presumably might employ fewer deficit perspectives due to the language and culture focus of their educational model. In turn, this study asked: How does school climate discourse shape Spanish-speaking parents’ abilities to engage at a Spanish immersion elementary school (SIES)? Do parents enact relational power at SIES, and if so, how? Data analysis centered on school climate surveys completed by 19 Spanish-speaking mothers. Framed by Ecologies of Parental Engagement (EPE) and Foucault’s concepts of power, the study ultimately examined not only parent perceptions, but also the research project and its own deficit-driven norms. Findings include: While parents reported trusting the school and teachers, many felt discouraged in SIES’s climate. Some blamed their level of involvement on their own (lack of) language or ability. Analyses also explore how the language immersion school and design of the research project—despite good intentions—were not bridging the gap between hegemonic English-speaking society and Spanish-speaking families. Pero poco se sabe sobre las condiciones que los padres de familia hispanohablantes en escuelas de inmersiĂłn en español, donde presumiblemente pueden emplear menos perspectivas con caracterĂ­sticas dĂ©ficit debido a la lengua y el enfoque cultural de su modelo educacional. Por esta razĂłn, este estudio pregunta: ÂżComo el discurso del ambiente de la escuela forma las habilidades de los padres de familia hispanohablante para comprometerlos en una escuela primaria de inmersiĂłn en español (SIES)? ÂżA caso los padres de familia promulgan poder relacional en SIES, y si es cierto, como lo hacen? Los anĂĄlisis de datos fueron centrados en encuestas sobre el ambiente escolar de 19 madres de familia hispanohablante. Enmarcados por conceptos de EcologĂ­as del Compromiso de Padres de Familia (EPE) y el concepto de poder por Foucault, este estudio examino no solo las percepciones de las madres, sino tambiĂ©n sobre el mismo estudio y sus normas dĂ©ficit. Hallazgos incluyen: Mientras las madres de familia reportaron una confianza hacia la escuela y los maestros, muchas de ellas se sintieron desalentadas por el ambiente escolar de SIES. Algunas de ellas culparon el nivel de involucraciĂłn a su misma (falta de) habilidad lingĂŒĂ­stica. Caso os pais exerçam o poder relacional na SIES, como eles fazem isso? As anĂĄlises de dados foi centrada em pesquisas sobre o ambiente escolar preenchidas por 19 mĂŁes de lĂ­ngua espanhola. Este estudo foi baseado em conceitos da Ecologia do Envolvimento dos Pais (EPE) e no conceito de poder de Foucault, e examinou nĂŁo apenas as percepçÔes das mĂŁes, mas tambĂ©m o prĂłprio estudo e suas normas deficitĂĄrias.
