Three-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau simulation of a vortex line displaced by a zigzag of pinning spheres
A vortex line is shaped by a zigzag of pinning centers and we study here how
far the stretched vortex line is able to follow this path. The pinning center
is described by an insulating sphere of coherence length size such that in its
surface the de Gennes boundary condition applies. We calculate the free energy
density of this system in the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau theory and study
the critical displacement beyond which the vortex line is detached from the
pinning center.Comment: Submitted to special issue of Prammna-Journal of Physics devoted to

Recoil polarization and beam-recoil double polarization measurement of \eta electroproduction on the proton in the region of the S_{11}(1535) resonance
The beam-recoil double polarization P_{x'}^h and P_{z'}^h and the recoil
polarization P_{y'} were measured for the first time for the
p(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})\eta reaction at a four-momentum transfer of Q^2=0.1
GeV^2/c^2 and a center of mass production angle of \theta = 120^\circ at MAMI
C. With a center of mass energy range of 1500 MeV < W < 1550 MeV the region of
the S_{11}(1535) and D_{13}(1520) resonance was covered. The results are
discussed in the framework of a phenomenological isobar model (Eta-MAID). While
P_{x'}^h and P_{z'}^h are in good agreement with the model, P_{y'} shows a
significant deviation, consistent with existing photoproduction data on the
polarized-target asymmetry.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Hematologic and hepatic responses of the freshwater fish Hoplias malabaricus after saxitoxin exposure.
The bioaccumulation of saxitoxins (STX) in the trophic chain, mainly in freshwater, are not completely known. This work aimed to elucidate the effects of STX on Hoplias malabaricus through trophic bioassay. The fish were fed once every five days with Astyanax sp. before being subjected to an intraperitoneal inoculation with the lysate of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii culture containing 97% STX and 3% by neosaxitoxin and gonyautoxin during 20 days. The animal?s liver was assessed using biomarkers as activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and concentrations of reduced glutathione (GSH) and lipoperoxidation (LPO) and protein carbonylation (PCO). In the blood was analyzed the genotoxic and hematological parameters. The hepatosomatic index and the relative condition factor did not show a significant difference between the exposed and control groups. The values of mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and mean corpuscular hemoglobin increased in the STX group. The hepatic tissue from both groups exhibited a typical pattern that have been already described for most teleost fish. The results suggested the generation of reactive oxygen species, with increased activity of GPx and concentrations of LPO and GSH; whereas the specific activity of SOD decreased. However, no changes were observed in the CAT, PCO, and DNA damage. Although the STX effects are known as neurotoxic, this cyanotoxin caused liver biochemical alterations that can be considered ecologically relevant
Crossover between aperiodic and homogeneous semi-infinite critical behaviors in multilayered two-dimensional Ising models
We investigate the surface critical behavior of two-dimensional multilayered
aperiodic Ising models in the extreme anisotropic limit. The system under
consideration is obtained by piling up two types of layers with respectively
and spin rows coupled via nearest neighbor interactions and
, where the succession of layers follows an aperiodic sequence. Far
away from the critical regime, the correlation length is smaller
than the first layer width and the system exhibits the usual behavior of an
ordinary surface transition. In the other limit, in the neighborhood of the
critical point, diverges and the fluctuations are sensitive to the
non-periodic structure of the system so that the critical behavior is governed
by a new fixed point. We determine the critical exponent associated to the
surface magnetization at the aperiodic critical point and show that the
expected crossover between the two regimes is well described by a scaling
function. From numerical calculations, the parallel correlation length
is then found to behave with an anisotropy exponent which
depends on the aperiodic modulation and the layer widths.Comment: LaTeX file, 9 pages, 8 eps figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Surface Magnetization and Critical Behavior of Aperiodic Ising Quantum Chains
We consider semi-infinite two-dimensional layered Ising models in the extreme
anisotropic limit with an aperiodic modulation of the couplings. Using
substitution rules to generate the aperiodic sequences, we derive functional
equations for the surface magnetization. These equations are solved by
iteration and the surface magnetic exponent can be determined exactly. The
method is applied to three specific aperiodic sequences, which represent
different types of perturbation, according to a relevance-irrelevance
criterion. On the Thue-Morse lattice, for which the modulation is an irrelevant
perturbation, the surface magnetization vanishes with a square root
singularity, like in the homogeneous lattice. For the period-doubling sequence,
the perturbation is marginal and the surface magnetic exponent varies
continuously with the modulation amplitude. Finally, the Rudin-Shapiro
sequence, which corresponds to the relevant case, displays an anomalous surface
critical behavior which is analyzed via scaling considerations: Depending on
the value of the modulation, the surface magnetization either vanishes with an
essential singularity or remains finite at the bulk critical point, i.e., the
surface phase transition is of first order.Comment: 8 pages, 7 eps-figures, uses RevTex and epsf, minor correction
Reply to Comment on "High-Precision Determination of the Electric and Magnetic Form Factors of the Proton"
In arXiv:1108.3058v1 [nucl-ex], Arrington criticizes the Coulomb corrections
we applied in the analysis of high precision form factor data (see
Phys.Rev.Lett.105:242001, 2010, arXiv:1007.5076v3 [nucl-ex]). We show, by
comparing different calculations cited in the Comment, that the criticism of
the Comment neglects the large uncertainty of "more modern" TPE corrections.
This uncertainty has also been seen in recent polarized measurements. We rerun
our analysis using one of these calculations. The results show that the Comment
exaggerates the quantitative effect at small Q^2.Comment: 1 page, 2 figure, To appear as a Reply Comment in Physical Review

High-precision determination of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton
New precise results of a measurement of the elastic electron-proton
scattering cross section performed at the Mainz Microtron MAMI are presented.
About 1400 cross sections were measured with negative four-momentum transfers
squared up to Q^2=1 (GeV/c)^2 with statistical errors below 0.2%. The electric
and magnetic form factors of the proton were extracted by fits of a large
variety of form factor models directly to the cross sections. The form factors
show some features at the scale of the pion cloud. The charge and magnetic
radii are determined to be r_E=0.879(5)(stat.)(4)(syst.)(2)(model)(4)(group) fm
and r_M=0.777(13)(stat.)(9)(syst.)(5)(model)(2)(group) fm.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, published in Phys. Rev. Lett. v3: added

The electric and magnetic form factors of the proton
The paper describes a precise measurement of electron scattering off the
proton at momentum transfers of \ GeV. The
average point-to-point error of the cross sections in this experiment is
0.37%. These data are used for a coherent new analysis together with all world
data of unpolarized and polarized electron scattering from the very smallest to
the highest momentum transfers so far measured. The extracted electric and
magnetic form factors provide new insight into their exact shape, deviating
from the classical dipole form, and of structure on top of this gross shape.
The data reaching very low values are used for a new determination of the
electric and magnetic radii. An empirical determination of the
Two-Photon-Exchange (TPE) correction is presented. The implications of this
correction on the radii and the question of a directly visible signal of the
pion cloud are addressed.Comment: 38 pages, 20 figures. Updated data files. PRC versio
