    Enhanced dispersion interaction between quasi-one dimensional conducting collinear structures

    Recent investigations have highlighted the failure of a sum of R−6R^{-6} terms to represent the dispersion interaction in parallel metallic, anisotropic, linear or planar nanostructures [J. F. Dobson, A. White, and A. Rubio, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 073201 (2006) and references therein]. By applying a simple coupled plasmon approach and using electron hydrodynamics, we numerically evaluate the dispersion (non-contact van der Waals) interaction between two conducting wires in a collinear pointing configuration. This case is compared to that of two insulating wires in an identical geometry, where the dispersion interaction is modelled both within a pairwise summation framework, and by adding a pinning potential to our theory leading to a standard oscillator-type model of insulating dielectric behavior. Our results provide a further example of enhanced dispersion interaction between two conducting nanosystems compared to the case of two insulating ones. Unlike our previous work, this calculation explores a region of relatively close coupling where, although the electronic clouds do not overlap, we are still far from the asymptotic region where a single power law describes the dispersion energy. We find that strong differences in dispersion attraction between metallic and semiconducting / insulating cases persist into this non-asymptotic region. While our theory will need to be supplemented with additional short-ranged terms when the electronic clouds overlap, it does not suffer from the short-distance divergence exhibited by purely asymptotic theories, and gives a natural saturation of the dispersion energy as the wires come into contact.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures.     Comparing sample surveys of health with official population statistics: some methodological issues and empirical findings

    This article reports an examination of factors that might affect the interpretation of computed relative risks of medical illness obtained when estimates of morbidity derived from a specific subpopulation sample are compared with estimates obtained from official statitical bureau surveys of the parent population. Interpreting a significant or nonsignificant relative risk depends upon how fair the comparison is. Three types of error are considered: (1) those arising from subjects, including coverage, selection, response and comparability; (2) those arising from measurement processes, including data collection instruments, interviewers and data processing; and (3) those arising from confounding, which occurs when a risk factor for outcome is differentially distributed between exposure groups. An example is given from a comparison of two sets of morbidity estimates, one obtained from an epidemiological cohort study of a national random list sample of Australian Vietnam veterans, the other obtained by an Australian Bureau of Statistics national area probability sample. Variables measuring prevalence of 37 recent and chronic illness conditions were derived from both studies and their ratio computed as the relative risk of illness in the veteran sample compared with the Australian population sample. This risk was greater than 1.0 for all except one condition, and 18 of 36 recent conditions and 30 of 37 chronic conditions carried 99% confidence intervals excluding 1.0. Adjustment for variables that were thought to have potentially biased the relative risks gave varied results. The issue of when an adjustment becomes an overadjustment depends upon the meaning of the variable and its place in a putative causal pathway

    Extended x ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) is observed as a modulation on the high energy side of an x ray absorption edge. It occurs when the photo-ejected electron wave is scattered by neighboring atoms in a solid, and interference occurs between the outgoing and scattered waves. The result is that the absorption spectrum carries a signature that is characteristic of the identity and disposition of scattering atoms around the absorbing atom. Therefore, it may be shown that the Fourier transform of the normalized EXAFS can provide detailed information about the immediate environment of specific atoms in a solid and is ideally suited to the study of cosmic dusts.     Local exchange-correlation vector potential with memory in Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory: the generalized hydrodynamics approach

    Using Landau Fermi liquid theory we derive a nonlinear non-adiabatic approximation for the exchange-correlation (xc) vector potential defined by the xc stress tensor. The stress tensor is a local nonlinear functional of two basic variables - the displacement vector and the second-rank tensor which describes the evolution of momentum in a local frame moving with Eulerian velocity. For irrotational motion and equilibrium initial state the dependence on the tensor variable reduces to that on a metrics generated by a dynamical deformation of the system.Comment: RevTex, 5 pages, no figures.     Distributed Generation and Resilience in Power Grids

    We study the effects of the allocation of distributed generation on the resilience of power grids. We find that an unconstrained allocation and growth of the distributed generation can drive a power grid beyond its design parameters.     A Combined MG II/CA II Survey of Stellar Magnetic Activity in the Solar Neighborhood

    We use nearly contemporaneus low-resolution IUE observations of Mg II h + k emission and Mount Wilson Observatory Ca II H + K S indices for 33 pairs of observations of lower main sequence stars to formulate a relationship that will permit accurate predictions of S values as a function of (B - V) color and Mg II h + k flux. The resulting relationship is useful because it will extend the set of solar neighborhood stars for which a uniform estimate of chromospheric activity is available to include stars that are not observable from Mount Wilson as well as providing additional estimates of activity levels for stars that are on the Mount Wilson HK Project observing list

    Revenue divergence and competitive balance in a divisional sports league

    The North American model of resource allocation in professional sports leagues is adapted for English (association) football. The theoretical relationship between revenue and competitive balance is shown to be robust with respect to changes in teams’ objectives and labour market conditions. Empirical revenue functions are reported for 1926-1999. These indicate a shift in the composition of demand favouring big-city teams and an increase in the sensitivity of revenue to performance. An analysis of match results in the FA Cup competition suggests an increase in competitive imbalance between teams at different levels of the league’s divisional hierarchy, as the theory suggests

    Correlation energy of a two-dimensional electron gas from static and dynamic exchange-correlation kernels

    We calculate the correlation energy of a two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas using several available approximations for the exchange-correlation kernel fxc(q,ω)f_{\rm xc}(q,\omega) entering the linear dielectric response of the system. As in the previous work of Lein {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 67}, 13431 (2000)] on the three-dimensional electron gas, we give attention to the relative roles of the wave number and frequency dependence of the kernel and analyze the correlation energy in terms of contributions from the (q,iω)(q, i\omega) plane. We find that consistency of the kernel with the electron-pair distribution function is important and in this case the nonlocality of the kernel in time is of minor importance, as far as the correlation energy is concerned. We also show that, and explain why, the popular Adiabatic Local Density Approximation performs much better in the two-dimensional case than in the three-dimensional one.Comment: 9 Pages, 4 Figure

    There are currently no disease-modifying treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD), and an understanding of preclinical causal biomarkers to help target disease pathogenesis in the earliest phases remains elusive. Here, we investigated whether 19 metabolites previously associated with midlife cognition-a preclinical predictor of AD-translate to later clinical risk, using Mendelian randomization (MR) to tease out AD-specific causal relationships. Summary statistics from the largest genome-wide association studies (GWASs) for AD and metabolites were used to perform bidirectional univariable MR. Bayesian model averaging (BMA) was additionally performed to address high correlation between metabolites and identify metabolite combinations that may be on the AD causal pathway. Univariable MR indicated four extra-large high-density lipoproteins (XL.HDL) on the causal pathway to AD: free cholesterol (XL.HDL.FC: 95% CI = 0.78 to 0.94), total lipids (XL.HDL.L: 95% CI = 0.80 to 0.97), phospholipids (XL.HDL.PL: 95% CI = 0.81 to 0.97), and concentration of XL.HDL particles (95% CI = 0.79 to 0.96), significant at an adjusted P < 0.009. MR-BMA corroborated XL.HDL.FC to be among the top three causal metabolites, in addition to total cholesterol in XL.HDL (XL.HDL.C) and glycoprotein acetyls (GP). Both XL.HDL.C and GP demonstrated suggestive univariable evidence of causality (P < 0.05), and GP successfully replicated within an independent dataset. This study offers insight into the causal relationship between metabolites demonstrating association with midlife cognition and AD. It highlights GP in addition to several XL.HDLs-particularly XL.HDL.FC-as causal candidates warranting further investigation. As AD pathology is thought to develop decades prior to symptom onset, expanding on these findings could inform risk reduction strategies
