Three-Nucleon Electroweak Capture Reactions
Recent advances in the study of the p-d radiative and mu-3he weak capture
processes are presented and discussed. The three-nucleon bound and scattering
states are obtained using the correlated-hyperspherical-harmonics method, with
realistic Hamiltonians consisting of the Argonne v14 or Argonne v18 two-nucleon
and Tucson-Melbourne or Urbana IX three-nucleon interactions. The
electromagnetic and weak transition operators include one- and two-body
contributions. The theoretical accuracy achieved in these calculations allows

Role of heavy-meson exchange in pion production near threshold
Recent calculations of -wave pion production have severely underestimated
the accurately known \ total cross section near
threshold. In these calculations, only the single-nucleon axial-charge operator
is considered. We have calculated, in addition to the one-body term, the
two-body contributions to this reaction that arise from the exchange of mesons.
We find that the inclusion of the scalar -meson exchange current (and
lesser contributions from other mesons) increases the cross section by about a
factor of five, and leads to excellent agreement with the data. The results are
neither very sensitive to changes in the distorting potential that generates
the wave function, nor to different choices for the meson-nucleon form
factors. We argue that \ data provide direct
experimental evidence for meson-exchange contributions to the axial current.Comment: 28 Pages, IU-NTC #93-0
A Skyrme model approach to the spin-orbit force
The spin-orbit force is a vital tool in describing finite nuclei and nucleon interactions; however its microscopic origin is not fully understood. In this paper we study a model inspired by Skyrmions which provides a classical explanation of the force. To simplify the calculations the Skyrmions are approximated as two-dimensional rigid discs which behave like quantum cogwheels

Atlas of prostate cancer heritability in European and African-American men pinpoints tissue-specific regulation
Although genome-wide association studies have identified over 100 risk loci that explain ~33% of familial risk for prostate cancer (PrCa), their functional effects on risk remain largely unknown. Here we use genotype data from 59,089 men of European and African American ancestries combined with cell-type-specific epigenetic data to build a genomic atlas of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) heritability in PrCa. We find significant differences in heritability between variants in prostate-relevant epigenetic marks defined in normal versus tumour tissue as well as between tissue and cell lines. The majority of SNP heritability lies in regions marked by H3k27 acetylation in prostate adenoc7arcinoma cell line (LNCaP) or by DNaseI hypersensitive sites in cancer cell lines. We find a high degree of similarity between European and African American ancestries suggesting a similar genetic architecture from common variation underlying PrCa risk. Our findings showcase the power of integrating functional annotation with genetic data to understand the genetic basis of PrCa

Pion exchange currents in elastic electron deuteron scattering
The effects of pion-exchange pari and recoil currents on the electromagnetic form factors of the deuteron are calculated. Both exchange currents give significant contributions to the charge form factor and, despite some cancellation, their net effect is appreciable for q2 â©Ÿ 10 fmâ2
