    Searching singlet extensions of the supersymmetric standard model in Z6II Z_{6-II} orbifold compactification of heterotic string

    We search for supersymmetric standard model realizations with extra singlets and extra U(1) U(1) using the heterotic string compactification on the Z6II Z_{6-II} orbifold with two Wilson lines. We analyze the vacuum restabilization mechanism for three representative Pati-Salam string models obtained in the literature and present detailed results for the effective superpotential compatible with the string selection rules. An automated selection of semi-realistic vacua along flat directions in the non-Abelian singlet modes field space is performed by requiring the presence of massless pairs of electroweak Higgs bosons having trilinear superpotential couplings with massless singlet modes and the decoupling of color triplet exotic modes needed to suppress BB and L L number violating processes.Comment: revtex4 format, 21 pages, 7 tables, shortened version added reference

    A self-optimised approach to synthesising DEHiBA for advanced nuclear reprocessing, exploiting the power of machine-learning

    In an effort to advance the development of hydrometallurgical reprocessing of used nuclear fuel across the globe, this work sets out to explore and identify an optimised, cost effective pathway to synthesise the ligand DEHiBA (N,N-di-(2-ethylhexyl)isobutyramide). Currently, very few chemical suppliers stock and distribute this specialist ligand, designed for selective uranium chelation and extraction from nuclear fuel. The current high cost of DEHiBA therefore restricts access to essential large-scale testing of this promising ligand designed to advance nuclear reprocessing. This work utilises an automated flow reactor platform for the efficient optimisation of four synthetic routes to DEHiBA. These optimisations focus on optimising cost, reagent efficiency, yield, and productivity target functions by exploiting the power of machine-learning algorithms for rapid process development. Ultimately, we have identified an efficient and cost-effective solvent-free route to DEHiBA from isobutyric anhydride and di-2-ethylhexylamine for 99%, at a purity of 76%, and a process mass intensity of 1.29 g g−1, whilst alternative conditions demonstrated productivities >75 kg L−1 h−1, all whilst maintaining a high level of process control with outlet temperatures not exceeding 35 °C

    Theory-Motivated Benchmark Models and Superpartners at the Tevatron

    Recently published benchmark models have contained rather heavy superpartners. To test the robustness of this result, several benchmark models have been constructed based on theoretically well-motivated approaches, particularly string-based ones. These include variations on anomaly and gauge-mediated models, as well as gravity mediation. The resulting spectra often have light gauginos that are produced in significant quantities at the Tevatron collider, or will be at a 500 GeV linear collider. The signatures also provide interesting challenges for the LHC.     Measurement of the Strong Coupling alpha s from Four-Jet Observables in e+e- Annihilation

    Data from e+e- annihilation into hadrons at centre-of-mass energies between 91 GeV and 209 GeV collected with the OPAL detector at LEP, are used to study the four-jet rate as a function of the Durham algorithm resolution parameter ycut. The four-jet rate is compared to next-to-leading order calculations that include the resummation of large logarithms. The strong coupling measured from the four-jet rate is alphas(Mz0)= 0.1182+-0.0003(stat.)+-0.0015(exp.)+-0.0011(had.)+-0.0012(scale)+-0.0013(mass) in agreement with the world average. Next-to-leading order fits to the D-parameter and thrust minor event-shape observables are also performed for the first time.
