    Middle Childhood Adverse Psychomotor Outcomes from Malaria in Pregnancy: A Study using the Denver Developmental Screening Test-II

    Objective: to evaluate changes in the development of premature children aged 5 to 6 years, born to mothers with malaria during pregnancy and to compare them to a control group of premature children born to mothers who did not have malaria during pregnancy. Methods: cross-sectional and analytical study. The Denver test-II was applied to 20 children in the study group and 20 children in the control group. Results: in the group of premature children of mothers with malaria during pregnancy, the vast majority showed abnormal performance with more significant changes in the activities of the language sector "define seven words", "say two compound words", "understand four prepositions" and "account five blocks”, “knows three adjectives”. In the fine-adaptive motor sector, the activities "draw people with six parts", "copy disassembled square", "copy +" and in the gross motor sector "swing your foot for six seconds", "swing your foot for five seconds", "swing the foot for four seconds", "rocks the foot for three seconds", were the most important developmental changes. In the control group, the performance of suspected delay or possible abnormality was more concentrated in the gross motor sector. Conclusions: children from 5 to 6 years of age, born prematurely to mothers with malaria during pregnancy, 80% had suspected abnormal performance, a result much higher than the group of children born prematurely to mothers without malaria. These results strongly suggest that malaria disease during pregnancy alters fetal development, producing developmental sequelae that can be detected even at 5 to 6 years of age. In addition, the results support the use of the Denver test-II as a simple screening method for the assessment of delays in child development, covering broad motor coordination (coarse), fine motor coordination (adaptive), language and personal-social adaptation.     Fatores associados a desfechos desfavoráveis após trauma craniano leve pediátrico em um centro de referência da região norte de Minas Gerais

    Study Design: Prospective cohort. Objective: To describe clinical and demographic characteristics of a sample of children with HI referred for acute care in a referral center of the north region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and assess clinical and radiological markers associated with unfavorable outcomes. Methodology: All children between the ages 0 to 14 years referred with head injury from February to September 2011 were included in this study. Socio-demographic and clinical data were collected at the moment of the initial assessment under informed consent. The patients were also reassessed via telephone calls after 7 and 91 days. Results: A total of 77 patients were included in this study. The mean age was 3.9 years with a standard deviation of 3.76 years. Falls and bicycle collisions were the main mechanisms of trauma. The most relevant clinical marker associated with unfavorable outcomes at 7 days was the parental perception of unusual behavior (Odds Ratio = 11.33; 95% confidence interval: 1.38-93.13; p = 0.02). Computer tomography scan abnormalities were associated with both unfavorable outcomes at 7 days (p=0.03) and at 91 days (p=0.02). Conclusions: The peculiar aspects of head injuries in a Brazilian population were described in this study. It was also found that unusual behavior and abnormalities on CT scan are factors that predict unfavorable outcomes in children with mild HI in this population.Modelo do Estudo: Coorte prospectivo. Objetivo do Estudo: Descrever características clínicas e demográficas de uma amostra de crianças encaminhadas por traumatismo craniano em um centro de referência na região norte de Minas Gerais e avaliar marcadores clínicos e radiológicos associados a desfechos desfavoráveis. Metodologia: Foram incluídas neste estudo todas as crianças entre 0 e 14 anos atendidas com traumatismo craniano de fevereiro a setembro de 2011. Dados sócio demográficos e clínicos foram coletados no momento da avaliação inicial sob consentimento informado. Os pacientes também foram reavaliados por telefone após 7 e 91 dias. Resultados: Um total de 77 pacientes foi incluído neste estudo. A idade média foi de 3,9 anos, com desvio padrão de 3,76 anos. Quedas e colisões de bicicleta foram os principais mecanismos de trauma. O marcador clínico mais relevante associado a desfechos desfavoráveis com 7 dias foi a percepção pelos pais de comportamento anormal (Odds Ratio = 11,3; intervalo de confiança de 95%: 1,38-93,13; p = 0,02). Alterações na Tomografia Computadorizada foram associadas tanto a desfechos desfavoráveis após 7 dias (p=0,03) como após 91 dias (p=0,02). Conclusões: Os aspectos peculiares do traumatismo craniano em uma população brasileira são descritos neste estudo. Encontrou-se, ainda, que um comportamento anormal e alterações na TC são fatores que predizem desfechos desfavoráveis em crianças com traumatismo craniano leve nessa população

    Relationship between feed efficiency indexes and performance, body measurements, digestibility, energy partitioning, and nitrogen partitioning in pre-weaning dairy heifers.

    Abstract The objectives of this study were: 1) to classify animals into groups of high and low feed efficiency using two feed efficiency indexes (Residual feed intake (RFI) and residual feed intake and body weight gain (RIG)), and 2) to evaluate if pre-weaning heifer calves divergent for feed efficiency indexes exhibit differences in performance, body measurements, digestibility, energy partitioning, and nitrogen partitioning. A total of 32 Gyr heifer calves were enrolled in a 63-d trial and classified into two feed efficiency (FE) groups based on RFI and RIG (mean ± 0.5 SD). The groups were classified as high efficiency (HE) RFI (HE RFI, n = 9; HE RIG, n = 10), and low efficiency (LE) RFI (LE RFI, n = 10; LE RIG, n = 11). The remaining animals were classified as intermediate (n = 13 (RFI) and n = 11 (RIG)). HE and LE calves had RFI values of?0.052 and 0.049 kg/d (P < 0.05), respectively. The HE RFI group consumed 8.9% less solid diet than the LE RFI group. HE RFI animals exhibited an increased digestibility of crude protein and ether extract and tended to have greater total dry and organic matter digestibility. LE RFI animals had greater gross energy and nitrogen intake, though greater fecal losses resulted in a tendency to reduce energy and nitrogen use efficiency. HE and LE calves had RIG values of 0.080 and -0.077kg/d (P ? 0.01), respectively. HE RIG animals exhibited greater average daily gain (9.4%), body weight (BW), and heart girth, though HE RIG group exhibited narrower hip width. HE RIG animals tended to have greater ether extract digestibility but greater methane losses (% of gross energy). HE RFI in pre-weaning heifers seems to be related to differences in digestibility. Divergent animals for RIG during the assessed phase appear to differ in body measurements, which may be related to differences in the composition of the gain

    Towards an applied metaecology

    The complexity of ecological systems is a major challenge for practitioners and decision-makers who work to avoid, mitigate and manage environmental change. Here, we illustrate how metaecology – the study of spatial interdependencies among ecological systems through fluxes of organisms, energy, and matter – can enhance understanding and improve managing environmental change at multiple spatial scales. We present several case studies illustrating how the framework has leveraged decision-making in conservation, restoration and risk management. Nevertheless, an explicit incorporation of metaecology is still uncommon in the applied ecology literature, and in action guidelines addressing environmental change. This is unfortunate because the many facets of environmental change can be framed as modifying spatial context, connectedness and dominant regulating processes - the defining features of metaecological systems.
