Archaeal lipids in Mediterranean cold seeps: molecular proxies for anaerobic methane oxidation
We investigated the distributions and 13C values of biomarkers for Archaea associated with anaerobic methane oxidation in disparate settings throughout two Eastern Mediterranean mud dome fields. All major classes of archaeal lipids are present in the studied sediments, including isoprenoid glycerol diethers, isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers, and irregular isoprenoid hydrocarbons. Of the compounds present, many, including a novel glycerol tetraether and sn-3-hydroxyarchaeol, have not been previously reported for settings in which methane oxidation is presumed to occur. Archaeal lipids are depleted in 13C, indicating that the Archaea from which they derive are either directly or indirectly involved with methane consumption. The most widespread archaeal lipids are archaeol, PMI, and glycerol tetraethers, and these compounds are present at all active sites. However, archaeal lipid abundances and distributions are highly variable; ratios of crocetane, PMI, and hydroxyarchaeol relative to archaeol vary from 0 to 6.5, from 0 to 2, and from 0 to 1, respectively. These results suggest that archaeal communities differ amongst the sites examined. In addition, carbon isotopic variability amongst archaeal biomarkers in a given mud breccia can be as large as 24 , suggesting that even at single sites multiple archaeal species perform or are supported by anaerobic methane oxidation
Chaos in the Gauge/Gravity Correspondence
We study the motion of a string in the background of the Schwarzschild black
hole in AdS_5 by applying the standard arsenal of dynamical systems. Our
description of the phase space includes: the power spectrum, the largest
Lyapunov exponent, Poincare sections and basins of attractions. We find
convincing evidence that the motion is chaotic. We discuss the implications of
some of the quantities associated with chaotic systems for aspects of the
gauge/gravity correspondence. In particular, we suggest some potential
relevance for the information loss paradox.Comment: 29 pages, 11 figure
Chaos around Holographic Regge Trajectories
Using methods of Hamiltonian dynamical systems, we show analytically that a
dynamical system connected to the classical spinning string solution
holographically dual to the principal Regge trajectory is non-integrable. The
Regge trajectories themselves form an integrable island in the total phase
space of the dynamical system. Our argument applies to any gravity background
dual to confining field theories and we verify it explicitly in various
supergravity backgrounds: Klebanov-Strassler, Maldacena-Nunez, Witten QCD and
the AdS soliton. Having established non-integrability for this general class of
supergravity backgrounds, we show explicitly by direct computation of the
Poincare sections and the largest Lyapunov exponent, that such strings have

Falsification Of The Atmospheric CO2 Greenhouse Effects Within The Frame Of Physics
The atmospheric greenhouse effect, an idea that many authors trace back to
the traditional works of Fourier (1824), Tyndall (1861), and Arrhenius (1896),
and which is still supported in global climatology, essentially describes a
fictitious mechanism, in which a planetary atmosphere acts as a heat pump
driven by an environment that is radiatively interacting with but radiatively
equilibrated to the atmospheric system. According to the second law of
thermodynamics such a planetary machine can never exist. Nevertheless, in
almost all texts of global climatology and in a widespread secondary literature
it is taken for granted that such mechanism is real and stands on a firm
scientific foundation. In this paper the popular conjecture is analyzed and the
underlying physical principles are clarified. By showing that (a) there are no
common physical laws between the warming phenomenon in glass houses and the
fictitious atmospheric greenhouse effects, (b) there are no calculations to
determine an average surface temperature of a planet, (c) the frequently
mentioned difference of 33 degrees Celsius is a meaningless number calculated
wrongly, (d) the formulas of cavity radiation are used inappropriately, (e) the
assumption of a radiative balance is unphysical, (f) thermal conductivity and
friction must not be set to zero, the atmospheric greenhouse conjecture is

Effectiveness of a psycho-educational program for improving quality of life of fibromyalgia patients
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Most fibromyalgia patients are seen in primary care (PC). However, the effectiveness of the treatments prescribed by general practitioners is usually minimal. The main objective of the present research is to assess the efficacy of structured psycho-educational intervention, combined with relaxation, developed to improve the quality of life of patients suffering fibromyalgia (FM). The second objective is to assess the cost-effectiveness of this multimodal intervention.</p> <p>Method/Design</p> <p><it>Design</it>. Randomized controlled trial with a 12-month follow-up involving two groups, one of which is the intervention group that includes patients receiving a psychoeducational program and the other the control group consisting of patients treated for FM in the usual way.</p> <p><it>Setting</it>. Three urban PC centers in the province of Barcelona (Spain).</p> <p><it>Sample</it>. The total sample comprises 218 patients (over 18 years of age) suffering FM, selected from a database (Rheumatology service-Viladecans Hospital) of patients with this illness. Only those patients introduced in the database between the years 2005 and 2007 were included in the selection. Selected patients will be asked for written informed consent to participate in the study.</p> <p><it>Intervention</it>. Multi-component program including information about the illness, counselling about physical exercise and training in autogenic relaxation. The intervention consists of nine 2-hour sessions delivered during a two-month period. The pharmacological treatment prescribed by the physician was maintained in both groups.</p> <p><it>Main variables</it>. Sociodemographic characteristics, quality of life, use and cost of healthcare and social services.</p> <p><it>Measures</it>. Quality of life is to be measured with the FIQ and the EuroQol-5D, and the use of healthcare services with an adapted version of the Client Service Receipt Inventory (CSRI). These variables will be measured before the beginning of the program (baseline) and 1, 2, 6 and 12 months later.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This research project is an attempt to demonstrate that a psycho-educational program implemented in the context of PC can produce a significant increase in the quality of life for patients with FM, as well as a decrease in the use of healthcare and social services, compared with usual care.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>NCT00550966</p
Highly-accurate 5-axis flank CNC machining with conical tools
A new method for -axis flank computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining using a predefined set of tappered ball-end-mill tools (aka conical) cutters is proposed. The space of lines that admit tangential motion of an associated truncated cone along a general, doubly curved, free-form surface is explored. These lines serve as discrete positions of conical axes in 3D space. Spline surface fitting is used to generate a ruled surface that represents a single continuous sweep of a rigid conical milling tool. An optimization based approach is then applied to globally minimize the error between the design surface and the conical envelope. Our computer simulation are validated with physical experiments on two benchmark industrial datasets,
reducing significantly the execution times while preserving or even reducing the milling error when compared to the state-of-the-art industrial software
Causality and the Entropy-Complexity Plane: Robustness and Missing Ordinal Patterns
We deal here with the issue of determinism versus randomness in time series.
One wishes to identify their relative weights in a given time series. Two
different tools have been advanced in the literature to such effect, namely, i)
the "causal" entropy-complexity plane [Rosso et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 99 (2007)
154102] and ii) the estimation of the decay rate of missing ordinal patterns
[Amig\'o et al. Europhys. Lett. 79 (2007) 50001, and Carpi et al. Physica A 389
(2010) 2020-2029]. In this work we extend the use of these techniques to
address the analysis of deterministic finite time series contaminated with
additive noises of different degree of correlation. The chaotic series studied
here was via the logistic map (r = 4) to which we added correlated noise
(colored noise with f-k Power Spectrum, 0 {\leq} k {\leq} 2) of varying
amplitudes. In such a fashion important insights pertaining to the
deterministic component of the original time series can be gained. We find that
in the entropy-complexity plane this goal can be achieved without additional
