A stereotaxic method for small animals using experimentally determined reference profiles
In bats conventional stereotaxic methods do not yield sufficient positional accuracy to allow reliable recordings and tracer injections in subnuclei of the auditory system. In a newly developed stereotaxic system experimentally measured patterns of skull profile lines are used to define the animal's brain position with an accuracy of ±100 μm. By combining the neurophysiological stereotaxic procedure with a standardization of the neuroanatomical processing of the brains, the location of recordings, stimulations or injections can be readily transformed into brain atlas coordinates. This facilitates the compilation and comparison of data within and among animals. The system is not restricted to use in bats and can be readily adapted to other experimental animals
The time-dependent localization of Ki 67 antigen-positive cells in human skin wounds
A total of 77 human skin wounds with a post-infliction interval between 3 h and 7 months were investigated and the proliferation marker antigen Ki 67 was visualized in paraffin sections using a specific monoclonal antibody (MIB). The re-built epidermal layer covering the former lesional area showed only a few basal cells positively staining for Ki 67 antigen. No enhanced reactivity was found when compared to uninjured skin. In basal cells of the epidermis adjacent to the wound area, however, varying numbers of positive cells occurred, but no information useful for a reliable time estimation of skin wounds could be obtained due to the considerable variability in the number of Ki 67 positive epidermal basal cells found in non-damaged skin. Fibroblastic cells in the wound area revealed an increased number of Ki 67-positive sites which could first be detected in a 1.5-day-old skin lesion. Positive results could be obtained in every specimen investigated after a post-infliction interval of 6 days up to 1.5 months. Only the scar tissue of the oldest wound examined (wound age 7 months) revealed no increase in the number of positively staining fibroblasts. Therefore, positive results indicate a wound age of at least approximately 1.5 days and the lack of an increased number of positive fibroblastic cells in a sufficient number of specimens indicates at a wound age of less than 6 days, but cannot totally exclude longer post-infliction intervals
Decidability properties for fragments of CHR
We study the decidability of termination for two CHR dialects which,
similarly to the Datalog like languages, are defined by using a signature which
does not allow function symbols (of arity >0). Both languages allow the use of
the = built-in in the body of rules, thus are built on a host language that
supports unification. However each imposes one further restriction. The first
CHR dialect allows only range-restricted rules, that is, it does not allow the
use of variables in the body or in the guard of a rule if they do not appear in
the head. We show that the existence of an infinite computation is decidable
for this dialect. The second dialect instead limits the number of atoms in the
head of rules to one. We prove that in this case, the existence of a
terminating computation is decidable. These results show that both dialects are
strictly less expressive than Turing Machines. It is worth noting that the
language (without function symbols) without these restrictions is as expressive
as Turing Machines
Justifications in Constraint Handling Rules for Logical Retraction in Dynamic Algorithms
We present a straightforward source-to-source transformation that introduces
justifications for user-defined constraints into the CHR programming language.
Then a scheme of two rules suffices to allow for logical retraction (deletion,
removal) of constraints during computation. Without the need to recompute from
scratch, these rules remove not only the constraint but also undo all
consequences of the rule applications that involved the constraint. We prove a
confluence result concerning the rule scheme and show its correctness. When
algorithms are written in CHR, constraints represent both data and operations.
CHR is already incremental by nature, i.e. constraints can be added at runtime.
Logical retraction adds decrementality. Hence any algorithm written in CHR with
justifications will become fully dynamic. Operations can be undone and data can
be removed at any point in the computation without compromising the correctness
of the result. We present two classical examples of dynamic algorithms, written
in our prototype implementation of CHR with justifications that is available
online: maintaining the minimum of a changing set of numbers and shortest paths
in a graph whose edges change.Comment: Pre-proceedings paper presented at the 27th International Symposium

Project EDUCARE: Documentation of scales for elementary school children
Project EDUCARE: Documentation of scales for early childhood educators in child care centers
Die in diesem Dokument aufgeführten Skalen dienen der Erfassung der bildungsbezogenen Vorstellungen und Praktiken von pädagogischen Fachkräften in Kindertageseinrichtungen. First order and stable relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics
Relativistic thermodynamics is derived from kinetic equilibrium in a general
frame. Based on a novel interpretation of Lagrange multipliers in the
equilibrium state we obtain a generic stable but first order relativistic
dissipative hydrodynamics. Although this was believed to be impossible, we
circumvent this difficulty by a specific handling of the heat flow.Comment: revised, 11 pages, accepted for publication in PL
Second-order Relativistic Hydrodynamic Equations for Viscous Systems; how does the dissipation affect the internal energy?
We derive the second-order dissipative relativistic hydrodynamic equations in
a generic frame with a continuous parameter from the relativistic Boltzmann
equation. We present explicitly the relaxation terms in the energy and particle
frames. Our results show that the viscosities are frame-independent but the
relaxation times are generically frame-dependent. We confirm that the
dissipative part of the energy-momentum tensor in the particle frame satisfies
obtained for the first-order equation before, in
contrast to the Eckart choice adopted as a
matching condition in the literature. We emphasize that the new constraint
can be compatible with the phenomenological derivation
of hydrodynamics based on the second law of thermodynamics.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. The significance of clear definition of local
rest frames for a viscous relativistic fluid is emphasized as an unsolved
problem. The relaxation equations are corrected by adding the vorticity and
acceleration terms, which were missed in the previous version
Role of the 2 zebrafish survivin genes in vasculo-angiogenesis, neurogenesis, cardiogenesis and hematopoiesis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Normal growth and development of organisms requires maintenance of a dynamic balance between systems that promote cell survival and those that induce apoptosis. The molecular mechanisms that regulate these processes remain poorly understood, and thus further <it>in vivo </it>study is required. Survivin is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family, that uniquely also promotes mitosis and cell proliferation. Postnatally, survivin is hardly detected in most tissues, but is upregulated in all cancers, and as such, is a potential therapeutic target. Prenatally, survivin is also highly expressed in several tissues. Fully delineating the properties of survivin <it>in vivo </it>in mice has been confounded by early lethal phenotypes following <it>survivin </it>gene inactivation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To gain further insights into the properties of survivin, we used the zebrafish model. There are 2 zebrafish <it>survivin </it>genes (<it>Birc5a </it>and <it>Birc5b</it>) with overlapping expression patterns during early development, prominently in neural and vascular structures. Morpholino-induced depletion of <it>Birc5a </it>causes profound neuro-developmental, hematopoietic, cardiogenic, vasculogenic and angiogenic defects. Similar abnormalities, all less severe except for hematopoiesis, were evident with suppression of <it>Birc5b</it>. The phenotypes induced by morpholino knockdown of one <it>survivin </it>gene, were rescued by overexpression of the other, indicating that the <it>Birc5 </it>paralogs may compensate for each. The potent vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) also entirely rescues the phenotypes induced by depletion of either <it>Birc5a </it>and <it>Birc5b</it>, highlighting its multi-functional properties, as well as the power of the model in characterizing the activities of growth factors.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Overall, with the zebrafish model, we identify survivin as a key regulator of neurogenesis, vasculo-angiogenesis, hematopoiesis and cardiogenesis. These properties of survivin, which are consistent with those identified in mice, indicate that its functions are highly conserved across species, and point to the value of the zebrafish model in understanding the role of this IAP in the pathogenesis of human disease, and for exploring its potential as a therapeutic target.</p
