Reliability of Selected Health and Performance Related Test Items from the Project Unique Physical Fitness Test Inventory

    Get PDF
This study was conducted to determine several psychometric qualities on selected items from the Project UNIQUE Physical Fitness Test Inventory. Coefficients of reliability (consistency within day and between day) were determined by intraclass techniques. The standard error of measurement was also determined for the selected items. In addition, the appropriate criterion score was determined by an analysis of variance and collaborated by an analysis of the superdiagonal of the inter-trial correlation matrix. For the multi-trial test items, 50 nonimpaired youth, 50 visually impaired youth, 50 auditory impaired youth, and 50 orthopedically impaired youth between the ages of 10 and 17, were randomly selected from the various schools participating in the Project UNIQUE study. Subjects for the single-trial items included 50 nonimpaired youth, 47 visually impaired youth, and 50 auditory impaired youth, between the ages of 10 and 17 randomly selected from at least two different schools in the Rochester, N.Y. and Buffalo, N.Y. areas. The results of this study showed that most of the test items were reliable. In addition, the reliability of the test items for the impaired groups was, in general, equal to or better than the reliability coefficients for the nonimpaired group. The results also indicated that in most cases the Project UNIQUE scoring procedures were appropriate, although some changes were recommended

Vortex Washboard Voltage Noise in Type-II Superconductors

In order to characterize flux flow through disordered type-II superconductors, we investigate the effects of columnar and point defects on the vortex velocity / voltage power spectrum in the driven non-equilibrium steady state. We employ three-dimensional Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations to measure relevant physical observables including the force-velocity / current-voltage (I-V) characteristics, vortex spatial arrangement and structure factor, and mean flux line radius of gyration. Our simulation results compare well to earlier findings and physical intuition. We focus specifically on the voltage noise power spectra in conjunction with the vortex structure factor in the presence of weak columnar and point pinning centers. We investigate the vortex washboard noise peak and associated higher harmonics, and show that the intensity ratios of the washboard harmonics are determined by the strength of the material defects rather than the type of pins present. Through varying columnar defect lengths and pinning strengths as well as magnetic flux density we further explore the effect of the material defects on vortex transport. It is demonstrated that the radius of gyration displays quantitatively unique features that depend characteristically on the type of material defects present in the sample.Comment: Latex, 17 pages, 14 figure

    An Investigation of Continued Fractions

    Get PDF
The study of continued fractions has produced many interesting and exciting results in number theory and other related fields of mathematics. Continued fractions have been studied for centuries by many famous mathematicians such as Wallis, Euler, Gauss, Lagrange, Ramanujan, Cauchy, and Khinchin. A connection between continued fractions and the Fibonacci sequence can be revealed by examining functional parameters of various rational functions. This work makes use of existing results concerning continued fractions and Mathematica to explore the relationship between continued fractions and rational functions

Non-equilibrium relaxation and critical aging for driven Ising lattice gases

We employ Monte Carlo simulations to study the non-equilibrium relaxation of driven Ising lattice gases in two dimensions. Whereas the temporal scaling of the density auto-correlation function in the non-equilibrium steady state does not allow a precise measurement of the critical exponents, these can be accurately determined from the aging scaling of the two-time auto-correlations and the order parameter evolution following a quench to the critical point. We obtain excellent agreement with renormalization group predictions based on the standard Langevin representation of driven Ising lattice gases.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures included; to appear in Phys. This research aims to explore how Secondary Bilingual Schools in the Community of Madrid develop their work and whether they make use of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences as a tool to facilitate students' learning. These intelligences are bodily-kinesthetic, musical, linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal and naturalist. Our work will focus on bodily kinesthetic intelligence. The first part of the study explores the work which has been carried out by teachers, students and language assistants. To do so, we have administered questionnaires and observed classes. The second part of the research extends the investigation to find out if ballet dancers and flamenco dancers have a significant improvement in the domains of phonetics and chemistry when trained with the aid of dance. Both groups will be compared with the control group (a group of regular students, who will receive the same training through a traditional method). Finally, it is shown head teachers are not aware of MI and its benefits to the class. Although teachers sometimes rely on music and dance in their classes, the reason is merely to motivate students rather than knowledge about MI Theory. With regard to assessment, all teachers agreed that assessments are important. Concerning language assistants, we unearthed that the BEDA program and the Franklin Institute have more prepared assistants (compared to the public school) as both institutions train their assistants for one year and are more aware of MI principles than head teachers. 80% of Franklin assistants take into account their students' strengths and weaknesses. With respect to students, 40 % of public schools students and the totality of BEDA students benefit from music and dance in the classroom and all students without exception enjoy learning through these aids. The fact that most students understand their classes in English and all of them were able to understand and answer the questionnaire of this study in English, show us that the bilingual program is efficient to teach a second language and that students are able to express themselves in the L2 as well. However, most students showed a strong Spanish accent. As evidenced in the results, training is an effective way to improve both pronunciation and chemical elements. A great improvement can be observed after each posttest, mainly in the experimental groups in which dance was used as a potent stimulus to help students to better intake the content

Slow relaxation and aging kinetics for the driven lattice gas

We numerically investigate the long-time behavior of the density-density auto-correlation function in driven lattice gases with particle exclusion and periodic boundary conditions in one, two, and three dimensions using precise Monte Carlo simulations. In the one-dimensional asymmetric exclusion process on a ring with half the lattice sites occupied, we find that correlations induce extremely slow relaxation to the asymptotic power law decay. We compare the crossover functions obtained from our simulations with various analytic results in the literature, and analyze the characteristic oscillations that occur in finite systems away from half-filling. As expected, in three dimensions correlations are weak and consequently the mean-field description is adequate. We also investigate the relaxation towards the nonequilibrium steady state in the two-time density-density auto-correlations, starting from strongly correlated initial conditions. We obtain simple aging scaling behavior in one, two, and three dimensions, with the expected power laws.Comment: 12 pages, 18 figures; to appear in Phys. Rev. E (2011

It attempts to trace and identify the divergences of ASEAN and APEC member countries with respect to the three areas of work agreed upon by ABPEC at the 1993 Seattle Summit: trade liberalization, trade facilitation and economic cooperation; differences that are explained, among other reasons, buy the different degrees of economic development achieved, different industrialization policies and different tariff structures. It is concluded that, within ASEAN, member countries differ in the speed of the trade liberalization process and in the allocation of industrial projects in the pursuit of industrial cooperation. Within APEC, countries have different points of view and interact differently in terms of focus, timelines, trade blockade issues, and open regionalism. But in both cases, countries converge on the need to achieve liberalization and openness to trade and investment.
