    Densidad básica de la madera de Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco en la Patagonia

    In the Andean region of Patagonia, Argentina, in the provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro and Chubut, there are numerous Douglas Fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb) Franco] plantations, which constitute one of the timber species most widely used in the region for commercial plantations. In this work, we studied Douglas Fir wood basic density and its variation within trees and among trees. Also, the relationship between wood density, ring-with and the proportion of latewood was examined by regression analysis, determining at the some time wood density of juvenile and mature wood. We found that mean wood density of Douglas Fir was 0,366 g/cm3, which is one of the lowest wood density values reported for this species elsewhere. Results show that rings-width and latewood proportion were significantly related to specific gravity. We also found that Douglas fir trees begun to produce mature wood at around 17 years of age.En la región andina de las provincias de Neuquén, Río Negro y Chubut de Argentina existen numerosas plantaciones de pino Oregón [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco], constituyendo una de las especies más utilizadas en plantaciones comerciales. En el presente trabajo se estudió la densidad básica de la madera de esta especie y su variación entre árboles y dentro de un mismo individuo, determinándose su relación con el ancho de anillos y la proporción leño temprano por medio de análisis de regresión. Paralelamente se determinó la densidad correspondiente a madera juvenil y madura. La densidad básica media para la población analizada fue de 0,366 g/cm3, valor que se encuentra entre los mínimos citados para diferentes lugares del mundo en los cuales se cultiva la especie. La densidad básica se correlacionó significativamente con el ancho de anillos y la proporción de madera tardía. Se encontró que la edad a partir de la cual se forma madera madura es 17 años

First published July 14, 2010; doi:10.1152/ajprenal.00654.2009.-Abnormalities in renal proximal tubular (PT) sodium transport play an important role in the pathophysiology of essential hypertension. the Na(+)/H(+) exchanger isoform 3 (NHE3) represents the major route for sodium entry across the apical membrane of renal PT cells. We therefore aimed to assess in vivo NHE3 transport activity and to define the molecular mechanisms underlying NHE3 regulation before and after development of hypertension in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). NHE3 function was measured as the rate of bicarbonate reabsorption by means of in vivo stationary microperfusion in PT from young prehypertensive SHR (Y-SHR; 5-wk-old), adult SHR (A-SHR; 14-wk-old), and age-matched Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats. We found that NHE3-mediated PT bicarbonate reabsorption was reduced with age in the SHR (1.08 +/- 0.10 vs. 0.41 +/- 0.04 nmol/cm(2)xs), while it was increased in the transition from youth to adulthood in the WKY rat (0.59 +/- 0.05 vs. 1.26 +/- 0.11 nmol/cm(2)xs). Higher NHE3 activity in the Y-SHR compared with A-SHR was associated with a predominant microvilli confinement and a lower ratio of phosphorylated NHE3 at serine-552 to total NHE3 (P-NHE3/total). After development of hypertension, P-NHE3/total increased and NHE3 was retracted out of the microvillar microdomain along with the regulator dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV). Las especies analizadas fueron: Candida albicans (n=584), Candida parapsilosis (n=196), Candida tropicalis (n=200), Candida glabrata (n=113), Candida krusei (n=50), Candida spp. y otras levaduras oportunistas (n=50). Los discos fueron manufacturados en el INEIANLIS “Dr. Carlos G. Malbrán”. Se midieron los halos de inhibición del crecimiento producidos por fluconazol y la concentración inhibitoria mínima (CIM) por el método de referencia M27-A2 modificado por EUCAST. Se establecieron los valores de corte del método de difusión en: ³ 16 mm para levaduras sensibles a fluconazol (CIM £ 8 μg/ml), entre 9 y 15 mm para sensibles dependientes de la dosis (CIM = 16-32 mg/ml) y £ 8 mm para resistentes (CIM ³ 64 μg/ml). El método de difusión tuvo 94,7% de concordancia con el de referencia, con 0,2% de errores very major y 0,3% de errores major. La reproducibilidad inter e intralaboratorio fue muy buena. Para detectar aislamientos sensibles a fluconazol, este método resulta confiable y de bajo costo; sin embargo, es conveniente que los aislamientos con halos £ 15 mm sean reevaluados por el método de referencia. (EN) In order to standardize and evaluate a disk diffusion method with visual reading to detect in vitro fluconazole susceptibility of yeast, 1193 clinical isolates were tested. These included 584 Candida albicans, 196 Candida parapsilosis, 200 Candida tropicalis, 113 Candida glabrata, 50 Candida krusei and 50 Candida spp. and other opportunistic yeasts. The disks were manufactured in the INEI-ANLIS “Dr. Carlos G. Malbrán”. The disk diffusion method results were compared to MIC results obtained by the reference CLSI M27-A2 broth microdilution method modified by EUCAST. The interpretative breakpoints for in vitro susceptibility testing of fluconazole were established at: zone diameter ³ 16 mm for MIC £ 8 μg/ml (susceptible isolates), between 9 and 15 mm for MIC = 16-32 mg/ml (susceptible dose-dependent isolates), and £ 8 mm for MIC ³ 64 μg/ml (resistant isolates). Overall agreement between the two methods was 94.7%, with 0.2% very major errors, and 0.3% major errors. Inter - and intralaboratory agreement was good. The disk diffusion method for drug susceptibility testing of Candida spp. isolates is inexpensive, reliable and reproducible. However, when the inhibition zone diameter is £ 15 mm, it is advisable to test the isolate by the reference microdilution method

    Right Ventricular Adaptation Is Associated with the Glu298Asp Variant of the NOS3 Gene in Elite Athletes

    Nitric oxide (NO), an important endogenous pulmonary vasodilator is synthetized by the endothelial NO synthase (NOS3). Reduced NO bioavailability and thus the Glu298Asp polymorphism of NOS3 may enhance right ventricular (RV) afterload and hypertrophic remodeling and influence athletic performance. To test this hypothesis world class level athletes (water polo players, kayakers, canoeists, rowers, swimmers, n = 126) with a VO2 maximum greater than 50ml/kg/min were compared with non-athletic volunteers (n = 155). Cardiopulmonary exercise tests and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) were performed to determine structural or functional changes. Genotype distribution of the NOS3 Glu298Asp polymorphism was not affected by gender or physical performance. Cardiac MRI showed increased stroke volume with eccentric hypertrophy in all athletes regardless of their genotype. However, the Asp allelic variant carriers had increased RV mass index (32+/-6g versus 27+/-6g, p<0.01) and larger RV stroke volume index (71+/-10ml versus 64+/-10ml, p<0.01) than athletes with a Glu/Glu genotype. Genotype was not significantly associated with athletic performance. In the non-athletic group no genotype related differences were detected. The association between the NOS3 Glu298Asp polymorphism and RV structure and dimension in elite athletes emphasizes the importance of NOS3 gene function and NO bioavailability in sport related cardiac adaptation

    RELAÇÕES ENTRE PODER E SUBJETIVIDADE EM UMA ORGANIZAÇÃO FAMILIAR

    Neste artigo, o objetivo é discutir os vínculos entre indivíduo e organização, que caracterizam a permanência, ou não, de sujeitos indicados como sucessores na empresa da família, tendo como base de análise as categorias inter-relacionadas de subjetividade e poder. Tal propósito originou uma pesquisa qualitativa, na qual o foco foram as histórias de vida dos três filhos do fundador de uma empresa familiar. No tratamento dos dados, foi usada a técnica da análise do discurso para a identificação das estratégias discursivas usadas pelos entrevistados em seus depoimentos, tendo elas sido agrupadas em duas categorias discursivas: histórias sobre o trabalho e histórias sobre a família. Na primeira categoria, a partir do mito do herói fundador, a história sobre o trabalho é romanceada, em um processo que, por meio da socialização primária, esconde o controle por intermédio da inserção de valores do pai na precoce entrada na empresa por parte dos filhos do sexo masculino. Sobre a família, os depoimentos sugerem que a empresa é sua continuação; sendo estendidos, ao negócio, os laços familiares. A empresa liga, simbólica e afetivamente, os fi lhos ao legado do pai, o que a torna um projeto de vida reapropriado e realimentado por eles. As conclusões alertam que as empresas familiares não deixam de ser empreendimentos econômicos mesmo sendo intensas em afetividade, sendo os filhos vítimas dos mesmos estratagemas que diversos autores denunciam em empresas capitalistas por aderirem a um sonho que não lhes pertence, mas que lhes cabe manter vivo
