Water dimer diffusion on Pd{111} assisted by an H-bond donor-acceptor tunneling exchange
Based on the results of density functional theory calculations, a novel mechanism for the diffusion of water dimers on metal surfaces is proposed, which relies on the ability of H bonds to rearrange through quantum tunneling. The mechanism involves quasifree rotation of the dimer and exchange of H-bond donor and acceptor molecules. At appropriate temperatures, water dimers diffuse more rapidly than water monomers, thus providing a physical explanation for the experimentally measured high diffusivity of water dimers on Pd{111} [Mitsui et al., Science 297, 1850 (2002)]

Basic physical parameters of a selected sample of evolved stars
We present the detailed spectroscopic analysis of 72 evolved stars, including
the [Fe/H] determination for the whole sample. These metallicities, together
with the Teff values and the absolute V magnitude derived from Hipparcos
parallaxes, are used to estimate basic stellar parameters (ages, masses, radii,
(B-V)o and log g using theoretical isochrones and a Bayesian estimation method.
The (B-V)o values so estimated turn out to be in excellent agreement with the
observed (B-V), confirming the reliability of the (Teff,(B-V)o) relation used
in the isochrones. The estimated diameters have been compared with limb
darkening-corrected ones measured with independent methods, finding an
agreement better than 0.3 mas within the 1-10 mas interval. We derive the
age-metallicity relation for the solar neighborhood; for the first time such a
relation has been derived from observations of field giants rather than from
open clusters and field dwarfs and subdwarfs. The age-metallicity relation is
characterized by close-to-solar metallicities for stars younger than ~4 Gyr,
and by a large [Fe/H] spread with a trend towards lower metallicities for
higher ages. We find that the [Fe/H] dispersion of young stars (less than 1
Gyr) is comparable to the observational errors, indicating that stars in the
solar neighbourhood are formed from interstellar matter of quite homogeneous
chemical composition. The three giants of our sample which have been proposed
to host planets are not metal rich, what is at odds with those for main
sequence stars. However, two of these stars have masses much larger than a
solar mass so we may be sampling a different stellar population from most
radial velocity searches for extrasolar planets. We also confirm that the
radial velocity variability tends to increase along the RGB.Comment: 17 pgs, 19 fig
Current research into brain barriers and the delivery of therapeutics for neurological diseases: a report on CNS barrier congress London, UK, 2017.
This is a report on the CNS barrier congress held in London, UK, March 22-23rd 2017 and sponsored by Kisaco Research Ltd. The two 1-day sessions were chaired by John Greenwood and Margareta Hammarlund-Udenaes, respectively, and each session ended with a discussion led by the chair. Speakers consisted of invited academic researchers studying the brain barriers in relation to neurological diseases and industry researchers studying new methods to deliver therapeutics to treat neurological diseases. We include here brief reports from the speakers
TWEETHER project for W-band wireless networks
The European Horizon 2020 project TWEETHER aims to make a breakthrough in wireless networks to overcome the congestion of the actual mobile networks and foster the new 5G networks. A European Consortium including four universities and five companies from four European countries is devoting a relevant effort to realize novel terminals and transmission hubs to operate in the W-band (93 – 95 GHz). This paper will describe the advancement of the project
Influence of Hybridization on the Properties of the Spinless Falicov-Kimball Model
Without a hybridization between the localized f- and the conduction (c-)
electron states the spinless Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) is exactly solvable in
the limit of high spatial dimension, as first shown by Brandt and Mielsch. Here
I show that at least for sufficiently small c-f-interaction this exact
inhomogeneous ground state is also obtained in Hartree-Fock approximation. With
hybridization the model is no longer exactly solvable, but the approximation
yields that the inhomogeneous charge-density wave (CDW) ground state remains
stable also for finite hybridization V smaller than a critical hybridization
V_c, above which no inhomogeneous CDW solution but only a homogeneous solution
is obtained. The spinless FKM does not allow for a ''ferroelectric'' ground
state with a spontaneous polarization, i.e. there is no nonvanishing
-expectation value in the limit of vanishing hybridization.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Explaining the Higgs Decays at the LHC with an Extended Electroweak Model
We show that the recent discovery of a new boson at the LHC, which we assume
to be a Higgs boson, and the observed enhancement in its diphoton decays
compared to the SM prediction, can be explained by a new doublet of charged
vector bosons from an extended electroweak gauge sector model with
SU(3)_C\otimesSU(3)_L\otimesU(1)_X symmetry. Our results show a good
agreement between our theoretical expected sensitivity to a 126--125 GeV Higgs
boson and the experimental significance observed in the diphoton channel at the
8 TeV LHC. Effects of an invisible decay channel for the Higgs boson are also
taken into account, in order to anticipate a possible confirmation of deficits
in the branching ratios into , , bottom quarks, and tau leptons.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
Charge-transfer metal-insulator transitions in the spin-one-half Falicov-Kimball model
The spin-one-half Falicov-Kimball model is solved exactly on an
infinite-coordination-number Bethe lattice in the thermodynamic limit. This
model is a paradigm for a charge-transfer metal-insulator transition where the
occupancy of localized and delocalized electronic orbitals rapidly changes at
the metal-insulator transition (rather than the character of the electronic
states changing from insulating to metallic as in a Mott-Hubbard transition).
The exact solution displays both continuous and discontinuous (first-order)
transitions.Comment: 22 pages including 4 figures(eps), RevTe
