    Quantum chaos in nanoelectromechanical systems

    We present a theoretical study of the electron-phonon coupling in suspended nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) and investigate the resulting quantum chaotic behavior. The phonons are associated with the vibrational modes of a suspended rectangular dielectric plate, with free or clamped boundary conditions, whereas the electrons are confined to a large quantum dot (QD) on the plate's surface. The deformation potential and piezoelectric interactions are considered. By performing standard energy-level statistics we demonstrate that the spectral fluctuations exhibit the same distributions as those of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) or the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE), therefore evidencing the emergence of quantum chaos. That is verified for a large range of material and geometry parameters. In particular, the GUE statistics occurs only in the case of a circular QD. It represents an anomalous phenomenon, previously reported for just a small number of systems, since the problem is time-reversal invariant.     It is predicted that for sufficiently strong electron-phonon coupling an anomalous quantum chaotic behavior develops in certain types of suspended electro-mechanical nanostructures, here comprised by a thin cylindrical quantum dot (billiard) on a suspended rectangular dielectric plate. The deformation potential and piezoelectric interactions are considered. As a result of the electron-phonon coupling between the two systems the spectral statistics of the electro-mechanic eigenenergies exhibit an anomalous behavior. If the center of the quantum dot is located at one of the symmetry axes of the rectangular plate, the energy level distributions correspond to the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE), otherwise they belong to the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE), even though the system is time-reversal invariant.Comment: 4 pages, pdf forma

    Gravitational waves: search results, data analysis and parameter estimation

    The Amaldi 10 Parallel Session C2 on gravitational wave (GW) search results, data analysis and parameter estimation included three lively sessions of lectures by 13 presenters, and 34 posters. The talks and posters covered a huge range of material, including results and analysis techniques for ground-based GW detectors, targeting anticipated signals from different astrophysical sources: compact binary inspiral, merger and ringdown; GW bursts from intermediate mass binary black hole mergers, cosmic string cusps, core-collapse supernovae, and other unmodeled sources; continuous waves from spinning neutron stars; and a stochastic GW background. There was considerable emphasis on Bayesian techniques for estimating the parameters of coalescing compact binary systems from the gravitational waveforms extracted from the data from the advanced detector network. This included methods to distinguish deviations of the signals from what is expected in the context of General Relativity

    A New Minimal-Stress Freely-Moving Rat Model for Preclinical Studies on Intranasal Administration of CNS Drugs

    Purpose. To develop a new minimal-stress model for intranasal administration in freely moving rats and to evaluate in this model the brain distribution of acetaminophen following intranasal versus intravenous administration. Methods. Male Wistar rats received one intranasal cannula, an intra-cerebral microdialysis probe, and two blood cannulas for drug administration and serial blood sampling respectively. To evaluate this novel model, the following experiments were conducted. 1) Evans Blue was administered to verify the selectivity of intranasal exposure. 2) During a 1 min infusion 10, 20, or 40 μl saline was administered intranasally or 250 µl intravenously. Corticosterone plasma concentrations over time were compared as biomarkers for stress. 3) 200 µg of the model drug acetaminophen was given in identical setup and plasma, and brain pharmacokinetics were determined. Results. In 96 % of the rats, only the targeted nasal cavity was deeply colored. Corticosterone plasma concentrations were not influenced, neither by route nor volume of administration. Pharmacokinetics of acetaminophen were identical after intravenous and intranasal administration, although the Cmax in microdialysates was reached a little earlier following intravenous administration. Conclusion. A new minimal-stress model for intranasal administration in freely moving rats has been successfully developed and allows direct comparison with intravenous administration.     Avaliação da infiltração marginal de restaurações de amálgama: mercúrio versus gálio

    Nowadays, there is an increasing concern about the presence of mercury in amalgam restorations, and alternative alloys were developed as substitutes for this material. In this study, the marginal leakage of two amalgam alloys (with mercury and with gallium) with two adhesive systems (PAAMA and Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus) were evaluated in class V cavities (margins in enamel and cement). Sound human teeth were restored and submitted to 500 cicles (5ºC-55ºC, 15 s in each wash) before immersion in dye ( methylene blue). The teeth were cut and evaluated. The scores were compiled and submitted to statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis test with 99% of confidence level). Based on the results, we can conclude that there was a significant difference between the utilized adhesives, and that the best performance was obtained by the Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus system. There was no statistical difference between the amalgam alloys nor between the tooth walls.As restaurações de amálgama sofrem hoje uma série de questionamentos em relação a presença de mercúrio na sua composição e ligas alternativas foram desenvolvidas para a substituição desse material. Neste estudo avaliamos a infiltração marginal de duas ligas de amálgama (com mercúrio e com gálio) conjuntamente com dois sistemas adesivos (PAAMA e Scotchbond Multi-Uso Plus) em cavidades de classe V (margens em esmalte e cemento). Foram utilizados dentes humanos que após serem restaurados foram termociclados (500 ciclos, 5ºC-55ºC, 15 s em cada banho) e inseridos em corante (azul de metileno) e então desgastados e avaliados. Os escores foram compilados e submetidos a análise estatística (teste de Kruskal-Wallis com significância de 1%). Baseados nos resultados encontrados, pode-se concluir que houve diferença significante entre os adesivos utilizados, sendo melhor o sistema Scotchbond Multi-Uso Plus, não havendo diferença estatística entre as ligas de amálgama e nem entre as paredes

    Maternal corticotropin-releasing hormone is associated with LEP DNA methylation at birth and in childhood: an epigenome-wide study in Project Viva

    BackgroundCorticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) plays a central role in regulating the secretion of cortisol which controls a wide range of biological processes. Fetuses overexposed to cortisol have increased risks of disease in later life. DNA methylation may be the underlying association between prenatal cortisol exposure and health effects. We investigated associations between maternal CRH levels and epigenome-wide DNA methylation of cord blood in offsprings and evaluated whether these associations persisted into mid-childhood.MethodsWe investigated mother-child pairs enrolled in the prospective Project Viva pre-birth cohort. We measured DNA methylation in 257 umbilical cord blood samples using the HumanMethylation450 Bead Chip. We tested associations of maternal CRH concentration with cord blood cells DNA methylation, adjusting the model for maternal age at enrollment, education, maternal race/ethnicity, maternal smoking status, pre-pregnancy body mass index, parity, gestational age at delivery, child sex, and cell-type composition in cord blood. We further examined the persistence of associations between maternal CRH levels and DNA methylation in children's blood cells collected at mid-childhood (n = 239, age: 6.7-10.3 years) additionally adjusting for the children's age at blood drawn.ResultsMaternal CRH levels are associated with DNA methylation variability in cord blood cells at 96 individual CpG sites (False Discovery Rate <0.05). Among the 96 CpG sites, we identified 3 CpGs located near the LEP gene. Regional analyses confirmed the association between maternal CRH and DNA methylation near LEP. Moreover, higher maternal CRH levels were associated with higher blood-cell DNA methylation of the promoter region of LEP in mid-childhood (P < 0.05, β = 0.64, SE = 0.30).ConclusionIn our cohort, maternal CRH was associated with DNA methylation levels in newborns at multiple loci, notably in the LEP gene promoter. The association between maternal CRH and LEP DNA methylation levels persisted into mid-childhood

    Spinal trigeminal neurons demonstrate an increase in responses to dural electrical stimulation in the orofacial formalin test

    Primary headaches are often associated with pain in the maxillofacial region commonly classified under the term “orofacial pain” (OFP). In turn, long-lasting OFP can trigger and perpetuate headache as an independent entity, which is able to persist after the resolution of the main disorder. A close association between OFP and headache complicates their cause and effect definition and leads to misdiagnosis. The precise mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are poorly understood, partly because of the deficiency of research-related findings. We combined the animal models of OFP and headache—the orofacial formalin test and the model of trigeminovascular nociception—to investigate the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying their comorbidity. In anesthetized rats, the ongoing activity of single convergent neurons in the spinal trigeminal nucleus was recorded in parallel to their responses to the electrical stimulation of the dura mater before and after the injection of formalin into their cutaneous receptive fields. Subcutaneous formalin resulted not only in the biphasic increase in the ongoing activity, but also in an enhancement of neuronal responses to dural electrical stimulation, which had similar time profile. These results demonstrated that under tonic pain in the orofacial region a nociceptive signaling from the dura mater to convergent trigeminal neurons is significantly enhanced apparently because of the development of central sensitization; this may contribute to the comorbidity of OFP and headache
