Zero Energy of Plane-Waves for ELKOs
We consider the ELKO field in interaction through contorsion with its own
spin density, and we investigate the form of the consequent autointeractions;
to do so we take into account the high-density limit and find plane wave
solutions: such plane waves give rise to contorsional autointeractions for
which the Ricci metric curvature vanishes and therefore the energy density is
equal to zero identically. Consequences are discussed.Comment: 7 page
Selectivity of metribuzin in postemergence of culture of carrot
A citação dos autores está incorreto. The initial slow growth and short stature of carrot can allow that weeds settle in crop areas, requiring the management of these plants for productivity not to decrease. Nevertheless, weeds control has been difficult because there are few herbicides available for weeds control in postemergence of carrots. Two experiments in the field were carried out to evaluate selectivity of metribuzin applied in postemergence of carrots. A experimental randomized block design was utilized with four repetitions. Treatments consisted of metribuzin doses (0, 144, 288, 432, 576, 720, 960 and 1,200 g ha-1), applied in postemergence of carrots of the Nantes variety. Roots productivity was evaluated and percentage of commercial roots and no-commercial roots was calculated. Metribuzin has not caused visual symptoms of intoxication in carrots. Doses lower than 432 g ha-1 of metribuzin do not reduce the total productivity of roots, independent of the application period. Any doses of metribuzin changed the percentage of commercial and noncommercial roots. It is concluded that metribuzin is selective for carrots of the Nantes variety in postemergence applications at doses of 432 g ha-1.O lento crescimento inicial da cenoura favorece o estabelecimento de plantas daninhas nas áreas de cultivo, sendo necessário o manejo dessas plantas para que não ocorra redução da produtividade.
Characterization of anti-crotalic antibodies
AbstractCrotalus durissus terrificus, C. d. collilineatus, C. d. cascavella and C. d. marajoensis are responsible minor but severe snake bites in Brazil. The venoms of these snakes share the presence of crotoxin, a neurotoxin comprising of two associated components, crotapotin and phospholipase A2 (PLA2). Treatment of the victims with specific antiserum is the unique effective therapeutic measure. The ability of anti-Crotalus antisera produced by the routine using crude venom to immunize horses or purified crotoxin and PLA2 as individual immunogens was compared. Antisera obtained from horses immunized with C. durissus terrificus crude venom were able to recognize and neutralize not only the toxins presents in C. durissus terrificus, but also the ones present in the venoms from C. d. collilineatus, C. d. cascavella and C. d. marajoensis. Antisera from horses immunized with individual crotoxin or PLA2, although in lesser titers, were also able of recognizing the toxins in all four Crotalus species and neutralize the lethality of the C. d. terrificus venom
Bioinformatics of the sugarcane EST project
The Sugarcane EST project (SUCEST) produced 291,904 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) in a consortium that involved 74 sequencing and data mining laboratories. We created a web site for this project that served as a ?meeting point? for receiving, processing, analyzing, and providing services to help explore the sequence data. In this paper we describe the information pathway that we implemented to support this project and a brief explanation of the clustering procedure, which resulted in 43,141 clusters.O projeto SUCEST (Sugarcane EST Project) produziu 291.904 ESTs de cana-de-açúcar. Effectiveness of the repair of unstabilised rammed earth with injection of mud grouts
The presence of cracks debilitates the structural performance of rammed earth. Grout injection is a repair solution put forward recently, where compatibility issues demand using mud grouts. Little is known on this topic, whereby an experimental program on the mechanical effectiveness of grout injection for repairing cracks in rammed earth was performed. Specimens tested under bending and diagonal compression were retested after repair with injection of mud grouts. Mud grouts incorporating the original soil of the rammed earth are shown to perform better and their injection achieves satisfactory shear strength recovery, but is less effective in recovering initial shear stiffness. This work was partly financed by FEDER funds through the Competitivity Factors Operational Programme -

Possible symmetries of the superconducting order parameter in a hexagonal ferromagnet
We study the order parameter symmetry in a hexagonal crystal with co-existing
superconductivity and ferromagnetism. An experimental example is provided by
carbon-based materials, such as graphite-sulfur composites, in which an
evidence of such co-existence has been recently discovered. The presence of a
non-zero magnetization in the normal phase brings about considerable changes in
the symmetry classification of superconducting states, compared to the
non-magnetic case.Comment: 4 pages, REVTe
Ferromagnetism in Oriented Graphite Samples
We have studied the magnetization of various, well characterized samples of
highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG), Kish graphite and natural graphite
to investigate the recently reported ferromagnetic-like signal and its possible
relation to ferromagnetic impurities. The magnetization results obtained for
HOPG samples for applied fields parallel to the graphene layers - to minimize
the diamagnetic background - show no correlation with the magnetic impurity
concentration. Our overall results suggest an intrinsic origin for the
ferromagnetism found in graphite. We discuss possible origins of the
ferromagnetic signal.Comment: 11 figure
A modified theory of gravity with torsion and its applications to cosmology and particle physics
In this paper we consider the most general least-order derivative theory of
gravity in which not only curvature but also torsion is explicitly present in
the Lagrangian, and where all independent fields have their own coupling
constant: we will apply this theory to the case of ELKO fields, which is the
acronym of the German \textit{Eigenspinoren des LadungsKonjugationsOperators}
designating eigenspinors of the charge conjugation operator, and thus they are
a Majorana-like special type of spinors; and to the Dirac fields, the most
general type of spinors. We shall see that because torsion has a coupling
constant that is still undetermined, the ELKO and Dirac field equations are
endowed with self-interactions whose coupling constant is undetermined: we
discuss different applications according to the value of the coupling constants
and the different properties that consequently follow. We highlight that in
this approach, the ELKO and Dirac field's self-interactions depend on the
coupling constant as a parameter that may even make these non-linearities
manifest at subatomic scales.Comment: 21 page
Factors influencing depression markers in elderly primary healthcare center patients in Maringá, Paraná, Brazil, 2017
METHODS: this was a cross-sectional study carried out with elderly individuals at PHCs in Maringá city; we used a questionnaire comprising sociodemographic questions, the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ); we analyzed associations and compared depression markers with sociodemographic variables and health conditions. RESULTS: 645 elderly people took part in the study; those with the highest depression markers had lower income, poor health perception, a history of falls and three or more comorbidities; the physically active elderly had lower depression markers. CONCLUSION: monthly income and health conditions are factors that influence depression markers; doing light physical activities is associated with lower tendency of depression in the elderl
Evaluation by blue native polyacrylamide electrophoresis colorimetric staining of the effects of physical exercise on the activities of mitochondrial complexes in rat muscle
Blue native polyacrylamide electrophoresis (BN-PAGE) is a technique developed for the analysis of membrane complexes. Combined with histochemical staining, it permits the analysis and quantification of the activities of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation enzymes using whole muscle homogenates, without the need to isolate muscle mitochondria. Mitochondrial complex activities were measured by emerging gels in a solution containing all specific substrates for NADH dehydrogenase and cytochrome c oxidase enzymes (complexes I and IV, respectively) and the colored bands obtained were measured by optique densitometry. The objective of the present study was the application of BN-PAGE colorimetric staining for enzymatic characterization of mitochondrial complexes I and IV in rat muscles with different morphological and biochemical properties. We also investigated these activities at different times after acute exercise of rat soleus muscle. Although having fewer mitochondria than oxidative muscles, white gastrocnemius muscle presented a significantly higher activity (26.7 ± 9.5) in terms of complex I/V ratio compared to the red gastrocnemius (3.8 ± 0.65, P < 0.05) and soleus (9.8 ± 0.9, P < 0.001) muscles. Furthermore, the complex IV/V ratio of white gastrocnemius muscle was always significantly higher when compared to the other muscles. Ninety-five minutes of exhaustive physical exercise induced a decrease in complex I/V and complex IV/V ratios after all resting times (0, 3 and 6 h) compared to control (P < 0.05), probably reflecting the oxidative damage due to increasing free radical production in mitochondria. These results demonstrate the possible and useful application of BN-PAGE-histochemical staining to physical exercise studies.93994
