    Design and placement of synthetic sex pheromone traps for cacao mirids in Ghana

    Cacao mirids (Sahlbergella singularis, Distantiella theobroma and Bryocoropsis laticollis) were captured in pheromone traps releasing a 2:1 blend of the sex pheromone components of the two first named species in a series of five experiments on cacao (Theobroma cacao) plantations in Ghana. A total of 835 cacao mirids were caught, all male, 95% of which were S. singularis, 3%D. theobroma and 2%B. laticollis. Two sticky trap and two water trap designs made from locally available materials were as effective for capturing S. singularis and total mirids as the best sticky trap from previously reported studies. Coating the outer surface of a large water trap with sticker increased the catch 4.4×, and 2.7× for a cylindrical sticky trap. Sticker on the outside of the water trap also increased the inside catch of S. singularis by 76% and total mirids by 71%. The numbers of S. singularis and D. theobroma trapped increased with increasing trap elevation and were highest around canopy level. Those traps caught an average 12× more mirids than traps at 1.8 m, the height recommended currently. Therefore, largewater traps coated with sticker and aligned with the cacao canopy should raise the current capture rates of pheromone traps for cacao mirids about 50×, which may be sufficient for effective pest management by mass trapping without synthetic insecticides

    Shared reading of children's interactive picture books

    We report on a study of children and parents shared reading of interactive printed books. We investigated the differences between books with interactive features and books with expressive typography in order to evaluate which features within a book encouraged interaction between the reading participants and the book. 11 parent and child groups took part in the study that involved three observed reading sessions. From our observations we offer suggestions for the development of books and eBooks to encourage shared reading practices

    Steiner t-designs for large t

    One of the most central and long-standing open questions in combinatorial design theory concerns the existence of Steiner t-designs for large values of t. Although in his classical 1987 paper, L. Teirlinck has shown that non-trivial t-designs exist for all values of t, no non-trivial Steiner t-design with t > 5 has been constructed until now. Understandingly, the case t = 6 has received considerable attention. There has been recent progress concerning the existence of highly symmetric Steiner 6-designs: It is shown in [M. Huber, J. Algebr. Comb. 26 (2007), pp. 453-476] that no non-trivial flag-transitive Steiner 6-design can exist.     Identification of host odour attractants for tsetse flies. Final report 1986-1990

    Tsetse flies, Glossina spp., are blood-feeding insects and vectors of trypanosomes, microorganisms which cause sleeping sickness in man and a similar disease, "nagana" in domestic animals. The economic importance of trypanosomiasis is the constraint it imposes on orderly rural development in Africa, leading to under-exploitation of infested land and over-exploitation and degradation of trypanosomiasis-free areas. Traps and targets which attract tsetse flies and kill them could provide environmentally-acceptable, appropriate technology for monitoring and control of tsetse in Africa. Unbaited devices providing only visual attraction have proved effective in monitoring and control of riverine species of tsetse, but not the savannah species found in the fly belt of Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe covered by the EDF Regional Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Control Project (RTTCP). Previously, collaborative was begun between glossinologists of the Zimbabwe Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and UK Tsetse Research Laboratory (TRL) and chemists at NRI. This brought together the experience of the DVS in the field, the experience of TRL in laboratory bioassay work, and the experience of NRI in using gas chromatography linked to electroantennography (GC-EAG) and chemical techniques to detect and identify insect behaviour-modifying chemicals. Tsetse attractants produced by host animals were identified and synthesised, and dispensing systems for these compounds devised. Traps and targets impregnated with insecticide, baited with these lures were shown to provide effective control of the savannah tsetse species, G. pallidipes and G. m. morsitans

    Block-Transitive Designs in Affine Spaces

    This paper deals with block-transitive tt-(v,k,λ)(v,k,\lambda) designs in affine spaces for large tt, with a focus on the important index λ=1\lambda=1 case. We prove that there are no non-trivial 5-(v,k,1)(v,k,1) designs admitting a block-transitive group of automorphisms that is of affine type. Moreover, we show that the corresponding non-existence result holds for 4-(v,k,1)(v,k,1) designs, except possibly when the group is one-dimensional affine.     Landau Damping and Coherent Structures in Narrow-Banded 1+1 Deep Water Gravity Waves

    We study the nonlinear energy transfer around the peak of the spectrum of surface gravity waves by taking into account nonhomogeneous effects. In the narrow-banded approximation the kinetic equation resulting from a nonhomogeneous wave field is a Vlasov-Poisson type equation which includes at the same time the random version of the Benjamin-Feir instability and the Landau damping phenomenon. We analytically derive the values of the Phillips' constant α\alpha and the enhancement factor γ\gamma for which the narrow-banded approximation of the JONSWAP spectrum is unstable. By performing numerical simulations of the nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation we check the validity of the prediction of the related kinetic equation. We find that the effect of Landau damping is to suppress the formation of coherent structures. The problem of predicting freak waves is briefly discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Generation of vortices and observation of Quantum Turbulence in an oscillating Bose-Einstein Condensate

    We report on the experimental observation of vortex formation and production of tangled vortex distribution in an atomic BEC of Rb-87 atoms submitted to an external oscillatory perturbation. The oscillatory perturbations start by exciting quadrupolar and scissors modes of the condensate. Then regular vortices are observed finally evolving to a vortex tangle configuration. The vortex tangle is a signature of the presence of a turbulent regime in the cloud. We also show that this turbulent cloud has suppression of the aspect ratio inversion typically observed in quantum degenerate bosonic gases during free expansion.Comment: to appear in JLTP - QFS 200

    The discontinuous nature of chromospheric activity evolution

    Chromospheric activity has been thought to decay smoothly with time and, hence, to be a viable age indicator. Measurements in solar type stars in open clusters seem to point to a different conclusion: chromospheric activity undergoes a fast transition from Hyades level to that of the Sun after about 1 Gyr of main--sequence lifetime and any decaying trend before or after this transition must be much less significant than the short term variations.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, to be published in Astrophysics and Space Scienc

    Our knowledge of the function of the auditory nervous system is based upon a wealth of data obtained, for the most part, in anaesthetised animals. More recently, it has been generally acknowledged that factors such as attention profoundly modulate the activity of sensory systems and this can take place at many levels of processing. Imaging studies, in particular, have revealed the greater activation of auditory areas and areas outside of sensory processing areas when attending to a stimulus. We present here a brief review of the consequences of such non-passive listening and go on to describe some of the experiments we are conducting to investigate them. In imaging studies, using fMRI, we can demonstrate the activation of attention networks that are non-specific to the sensory modality as well as greater and different activation of the areas of the supra-temporal plane that includes primary and secondary auditory areas. The profuse descending connections of the auditory system seem likely to be part of the mechanisms subserving attention to sound. These are generally thought to be largely inactivated by anaesthesia. However, we have been able to demonstrate that even in an anaesthetised preparation, removing the descending control from the cortex leads to quite profound changes in the temporal patterns of activation by sounds in thalamus and inferior colliculus. Some of these effects seem to be specific to the ear of stimulation and affect interaural processing. To bridge these observations we are developing an awake behaving preparation involving freely moving animals in which it will be possible to investigate the effects of consciousness (by contrasting awake and anaesthetized), passive and active listening

    Clustering Nominal and Numerical Data: A New Distance Concept for a Hybrid Genetic Algorithm

    As intrinsic structures, like the number of clusters, is, for real data, a major issue of the clustering problem, we propose, in this paper, CHyGA (Clustering Hybrid Genetic Algorithm) an hybrid genetic algorithm for clustering. CHyGA treats the clustering problem as an optimization problem and searches for an optimal number of clusters characterized by an optimal distribution of instances into the clusters. CHyGA introduces a new representation of solutions and uses dedicated operators, such as one iteration of K-means as a mutation operator. In order to deal with nominal data, we propose a new definition of the cluster center concept and demonstrate its properties. Experimental results on classical benchmarks are given
