    Organic Ring Oscillators with Sub-200 ns Stage Delay Based on a Solution-Processed p-type Semiconductor Blend

    High-frequency ring oscillators with sub-microsecond stage delay fabricated from spin-coated films of a specially formulated small-molecule/host-polymer blend are reported. Contacts and interconnects are patterned by photolithography with plasma etching used for creating vias and removing excess material to reduce parasitic effects. The characteristics of transistors with 4.6 μm channel length scale linearly with channel width over the range 60�2160 μm. Model device parameters extracted using Silvaco's Universal Organic Thin Film Transistor (UOTFT) Model yield values of hole mobility increasing from 1.9 to 2.6 cm2 Vs�1 as gate voltage increased. Simulated and fabricated Vgs = 0 inverters predict that the technology is capable of fabricating 5-stage ring oscillators operating above 100 kHz. Initial designs operated mainly at frequencies in the range 250�300 kHz, due to smaller parasitic gate overlap capacitances and higher supply voltages than assumed in the simulations. A design incorporating graded inverter sizes operates at frequencies above 400 kHz with the best reaching 529 kHz. The corresponding stage delay of 189 ns is the shortest reported to date for a solution-processed p-type semiconductor and compares favorably with similar circuits based on evaporated small molecules. Significant further improvements are identified which could lead to the fabrication of digital circuits that operate at much higher bit rates than previously reported

    Analysis of pooled genome sequences from Djallonke and Sahelian Sheep of Ghana reveals co-localisation of regions of reduced heterozygosity with candidate genes for disease resistance and adaptation to a tropical environment

    Background: The Djallonke sheep is well adapted to harsh environmental conditions, and is relatively resistant to Haemonchosis and resilient to animal trypanosomiasis. The larger Sahelian sheep, which cohabit the same region, is less well adapted to these disease challenges. Haemonchosis and Trypanosomiasis collectively cost the worldwide animal industry billions of dollars in production losses annually. Results: Here, we separately sequenced and then pooled according to breed the genomes from five unrelated individuals from each of the Djallonke and Sahelian sheep breeds (sourced from Ghana), at greater than 22-fold combined coverage for each breed. A total of approximately 404 million (97%) and 343 million (97%) sequence reads from the Djallonke and Sahelian breeds respectively, were successfully mapped to the sheep reference genome Oar v3.1. We identified approximately 11.1 million and 10.9 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the Djallonke and Sahelian breeds, with approximately 15 and 16% respectively of these not previously reported in sheep. Multiple regions of reduced heterozygosity were also found; 70 co-localised within genomic regions harbouring genes that mediate disease resistance, immune response and adaptation in sheep or cattle. Thirty- three of the regions of reduced heterozygosity co-localised with previously reported genes for resistance to haemonchosis and trypanosomiasis. Conclusions: Our analyses suggest that these regions of reduced heterozygosity may be signatures of selection for these economically important diseases

    In 2012, Fisheries Commission requested to Scientific Council: to provide Bmsy and Fmsy for cod in Div. 3M. The aim of this work is try to provide an estimative of these Reference Points. Results show that no stock recruitment relationship fits appropriately the 3M cod data. The level of Bmsy estimated from YPR and SPR depends on assumptions about the level of recruitment. So, more research about the possibility of changes in productivity and the level of recruitment that should be used to estimate the MSY is needed

    A preliminary examination of differential survey trends in recent years between the Canadian Spring and EU-Spain surveys for 3NO cod

    Results of the EU-Spain survey in Divs. 3NO are not used as input to the current ADAPT assessment model for 3NO cod but make an interesting comparison to the Canadian Spring survey since they occur at approximately the same time of year. The two surveys exhibit differences in both abundance and biomass trends in recent years, with the EU-Spain survey results indicating some relatively strong signs of stock growth since 2007 but the Canadian spring survey showing little to no sign of stock growth. Results did not change when analyses of the Canadian survey were restricted only to strata located all or partially within the NRA. An examination of distribution plots for the two surveys suggests that a lower density of fishing sets in the NRA by the Canadian Spring survey relative to the EU-Spain survey might be at least partially responsible for the differential trends between the two survey time series in recent years. However, because the EU-Spain survey covers only a small portion of the stock area, the observed trends for this survey can not be considered indicative of the entire stock. Differences in the length distribution of the catches were also evident in some years

    Is tagging with visual implant elastomer a reliable technique for marking earthworms?

    Visual implant elastomer (VIE) has recently been employed to investigate different aspects of earthworm ecology. However, a number of fundamental questions relating to the detection and positioning of the tag, its persistence and potential effects on earthworms remain unknown. Seven earthworm species belonging to three ecological groupings, with different pigmentation and burrowing behaviour, were tagged using different coloured VIE. External inspection after two days, one week and 1, 10 and 27 months were followed by preservation, dissection and internal inspection. Tags could be seen in living specimens to 27 months, and dissection revealed that in most cases they were lodged in the coelomic cavity, held in place by septa. However, over longer time periods (more than two years), the chlorogogenous tissue tended to bind to the tags and made external observation increasingly difficult. Migration of the VIE material towards the posterior of the earthworm and potential loss of the tag were only observed on rare occasions, and a recovery rate in excess of 98% was recorded. By introducing a reasonable amount of VIE into segments, just after the clitellum, this technique can become a valuable tool in earthworm ecology and life history studies, particularly in short-medium term laboratory and field experiments

    We present the results of Bragg spectroscopy performed on an accelerating Bose-Einstein condensate. The Bose condensate undergoes circular micro-motion in a magnetic TOP trap and the effect of this motion on the Bragg spectrum is analyzed. A simple frequency modulation model is used to interpret the observed complex structure, and broadening effects are considered using numerical solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to appear in PRA.     Theory of coherent Bragg spectroscopy of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

    We present a detailed theoretical analysis of Bragg spectroscopy from a Bose-Einstein condensate at T=0K. We demonstrate that within the linear response regime, both a quantum field theory treatment and a meanfield Gross-Pitaevskii treatment lead to the same value for the mean evolution of the quasiparticle operators. The observable for Bragg spectroscopy experiments, which is the spectral response function of the momentum transferred to the condensate, can therefore be calculated in a meanfield formalism. We analyse the behaviour of this observable by carrying out numerical simulations in axially symmetric three-dimensional cases and in two dimensions. An approximate analytic expression for the observable is obtained and provides a means for identifying the relative importance of three broadening and shift mechanisms (meanfield, Doppler, and finite pulse duration) in different regimes. We show that the suppression of scattering at small values of q observed by Stamper-Kurn et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 2876 (1999)] is accounted for by the meanfield treatment, and can be interpreted in terms of the interference of the u and v quasiparticle amplitudes. We also show that, contrary to the assumptions of previous analyses, there is no regime for trapped condensates for which the spectral response function and the dynamic structure factor are equivalent. Our numerical calculations can also be performed outside the linear response regime, and show that at large laser intensities a significant decrease in the shift of the spectral response function can occur due to depletion of the initial condensate.Comment: RevTeX4 format, 16 pages plus 7 eps figures; Update to published version: minors changes and an additional figure.     Assessment of the Cod Stock in NAFO Division 3M

    An assessment of the cod stock in NAFO Division 3M is performed. A Bayesian model, as used in the last assessments, was used to perform the analysis. As there are inconsistencies with total catch of the last three years, a prior was added for 2011 and 2012 catch and the Daily Catch Report data were used in 2013. Results indicate a general increase in SSB since 2005, reaching a value well above Blim since 2009

    Enzymatic Synthesis of Diverse Heterocycles by a Noncanonical Nonribosomal Peptide Synthetase

    Nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) are typically multimodular enzymes that assemble amino acids or carboxylic acids into complex natural products. Here, we characterize a monomodular NRPS, PvfC, encoded by the Pseudomonas virulence factor (pvf) gene cluster that is essential for virulence and signaling in different bacterial species. PvfC exhibits a unique adenylation-thiolation-reductase (ATR) domain architecture that is understudied in bacteria. We show that the activity of PvfC is essential in the production of seven leucine-derived heterocyclic natural products, including two pyrazines, a pyrazinone, and a rare disubstituted imidazole, as well as three pyrazine N-oxides that require an additional N-oxygenation step. Mechanistic studies reveal that PvfC, without a canonical peptide-forming domain, makes a dipeptide aldehyde intermediate en route to both the pyrazinone and imidazole. Our work identifies a novel biosynthetic route for the production of pyrazinones, an emerging class of signaling molecules and virulence factors. Our discovery also showcases the ability of monomodular NRPSs to generate amino acid- and dipeptide-aldehydes that lead to diverse natural products. The diversity-prone biosynthesis by the pvf-encoded enzymes sets the stage for further understanding the functions of pvf in bacterial cell-to-cell signaling

    Mechanisms for slow strengthening in granular materials

    Several mechanisms cause a granular material to strengthen over time at low applied stress. The strength is determined from the maximum frictional force F_max experienced by a shearing plate in contact with wet or dry granular material after the layer has been at rest for a waiting time \tau. The layer strength increases roughly logarithmically with \tau -only- if a shear stress is applied during the waiting time. The mechanisms of strengthening are investigated by sensitive displacement measurements and by imaging of particle motion in the shear zone. Granular matter can strengthen due to a slow shift in the particle arrangement under shear stress. Humidity also leads to strengthening, but is found not to be its sole cause. In addition to these time dependent effects, the static friction coefficient can also be increased by compaction of the granular material under some circumstances, and by cycling of the applied shear stress.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, submitted to Phys.
