Impact of mooring activities on carbon stocks in seagrass meadows
Boating activities are one of the causes that threaten seagrass meadows and the ecosystem services they provide. Mechanical destruction of seagrass habitats may also trigger the erosion of sedimentary organic carbon (Corg) stocks, which may contribute to increasing atmospheric CO2. This study presents the first estimates of loss of Corg stocks in seagrass meadows due to mooring activities in Rottnest Island, Western Australia. Sediment cores were sampled from seagrass meadows and from bare but previously vegetated sediments underneath moorings. The Corg stores have been compromised by the mooring deployment from 1930s onwards, which involved both the erosion of existing sedimentary Corg stores and the lack of further accumulation of Corg. On average, undisturbed meadows had accumulated ~6.4 Kg Corg m−2 in the upper 50 cm-thick deposits at a rate of 34 g Corg m−2 yr−1. The comparison of Corg stores between meadows and mooring scars allows us to estimate a loss of 4.8 kg Corg m−2 in the 50 cm thick deposits accumulated over ca. 200 yr as a result of mooring deployments. These results provide key data for the implementation of Corg storage credit offset policies to avoid the conversion of seagrass ecosystems and contribute to their preservation
Phase-Space Volume of Regions of Trapped Motion: Multiple Ring Components and Arcs
The phase--space volume of regions of regular or trapped motion, for bounded
or scattering systems with two degrees of freedom respectively, displays
universal properties. In particular, sudden reductions in the phase-space
volume or gaps are observed at specific values of the parameter which tunes the
dynamics; these locations are approximated by the stability resonances. The
latter are defined by a resonant condition on the stability exponents of a
central linearly stable periodic orbit. We show that, for more than two degrees
of freedom, these resonances can be excited opening up gaps, which effectively
separate and reduce the regions of trapped motion in phase space. Using the
scattering approach to narrow rings and a billiard system as example, we
demonstrate that this mechanism yields rings with two or more components. Arcs
are also obtained, specifically when an additional (mean-motion) resonance
condition is met. We obtain a complete representation of the phase-space volume
occupied by the regions of trapped motion.Comment: 19 pages, 17 figure
Dynamic Vortex Phases and Pinning in Superconductors with Twin Boundaries
We investigate the pinning and driven dynamics of vortices interacting with
twin boundaries using large scale molecular dynamics simulations on samples
with near one million pinning sites. For low applied driving forces, the vortex
lattice orients itself parallel to the twin boundary and we observe the
creation of a flux gradient and vortex free region near the edges of the twin
boundary. For increasing drive, we find evidence for several distinct dynamical
flow phases which we characterize by the density of defects in the vortex
lattice, the microscopic vortex flow patterns, and orientation of the vortex
lattice. We show that these different dynamical phases can be directly related
to microscopically measurable voltage - current V(I) curves and voltage noise.
By conducting a series of simulations for various twin boundary parameters we
derive several vortex dynamic phase diagrams.Comment: 5 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
