Dielectric functions and collective excitations in MgB_2
The frequency- and momentum-dependent dielectric function as well as the energy loss function Im[-\protect{]} are calculated for intermetallic superconductor
by using two {\it ab initio} methods: the plane-wave pseudopotential method and
the tight-binding version of the LMTO method. We find two plasmon modes
dispersing at energies -8 eV and -22 eV. The high energy
plasmon results from a free electron like plasmon mode while the low energy
collective excitation has its origin in a peculiar character of the band
structure. Both plasmon modes demonstrate clearly anisotropic behaviour of both
the peak position and the peak width. In particular, the low energy collective
excitation has practically zero width in the direction perpendicular to boron
layers and broadens in other directions.Comment: 3 pages with 10 postscript figures. Submitted to PRB on May 14 200
Effects of C, Cu and Be substitutions in superconducting MgB2
Density functional calculations are used to investigate the effects of
partial substitutional alloying of the B site in MgB2 with C and Be alone and
combined with alloying of the Mg site with Cu. The effect of such substitutions
on the electronic structure, electron phonon coupling and superconductivity are
discussed. We find that Be substitution for B is unfavorable for
superconductivity as it leads to a softer lattice and weaker electron-phonon
couplings. Replacement of Mg by Cu leads to an increase in the stiffness and
doping level at the same time, while the carrier concentration can be
controlled by partial replacement of B by C. We estimate that with full
replacement of Mg by Cu and fractional substitution of B by C, Tc values of 50K
may be attainable.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Surface and Image-Potential States on the MgB_2(0001) Surfaces
We present a self-consistent pseudopotential calculation of surface and
image-potential states on for both -terminated () and
-terminated () surfaces. We find a variety of very clear surface and
subsurface states as well as resonance image-potential states n=1,2 on both
surfaces. The surface layer DOS at is increased by 55% at and by
90% at the surface compared to DOS in the corresponding bulk layers.Comment: 3 pages, 6 figure
Levels and equivalence in credit and qualifications frameworks: Contrasting the prescribed and enacted curriculum in school and college
Drawing on data from an empirical study of three matched subjects in upper secondary school and further education college in Scotland, this article explores some of the factors that result in differences emerging from the translation of the prescribed curriculum into the enacted curriculum. We argue that these differences raise important questions about equivalences which are being promoted through the development of credit and qualifications frameworks. The article suggests that the standardisation associated with the development of a rational credit and qualifications framework and an outcomes-based prescribed curriculum cannot be achieved precisely because of the multiplicity that emerges from the practices of translation
The present and future of QCD
This White Paper presents an overview of the current status and future perspective of QCD research, based on the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the 2022 Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting. We present the progress made in the last decade toward a deep understanding of both the fundamental structure of the sub-atomic matter of nucleon and nucleus in cold QCD, and the hot QCD matter in heavy ion collisions. We identify key questions of QCD research and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions in the near future, hence defining priorities of our research over the coming decades
Towards a vulnerability assessment of the UK and northern European coasts: the role of regional climate variability
Within the framework of a Tyndall Centre research project, sea level and wave changes around the UK and in the North Sea have been analysed. This paper integrates the results of this project. Many aspects of the contribution of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) to sea level and wave height have been resolved. The NAO is a major forcing parameter for sea-level variability. Strong positive response to increasing NAO was observed in the shallow parts of the North Sea, while slightly negative response was found in the southwest part of the UK. The cause of the strong positive response is mainly the increased westerly winds. The NAO increase during the last decades has affected both the mean sea level and the extreme sea levels in the North Sea. The derived spatial distribution of the NAO-related variability of sea level allows the development of scenarios for future sea level and wave height in the region. Because the response of sea level to the NAO is found to be variable in time across all frequency bands, there is some inherent uncertainty in the use of the empirical relationships to develop scenarios of future sea level. Nevertheless, as it remains uncertain whether the multi-decadal NAO variability is related to climate change, the use of the empirical relationships in developing scenarios is justified. The resulting scenarios demonstrate: (i) that the use of regional estimates of sea level increase the projected range of sea-level change by 50% and (ii) that the contribution of the NAO to winter sea-level variability increases the range of uncertainty by a further 10–20cm. On the assumption that the general circulation models have some skill in simulating the future NAO change, then the NAO contribution to sea-level change around the UK is expected to be very small (<4cm) by 2080. Wave heights are also sensitive to the NAO changes, especially in the western coasts of the UK. Under the same scenarios for future NAO changes, the projected significant wave-height changes in the northeast Atlantic will exceed 0.4m. In addition, wave-direction changes of around 20° per unit NAO index have been documented for one location. Such changes raise the possibility of consequential alteration of coastal erosion
