Aligning self-assembled gelators by drying under shear
We show how drying under shear can be used to prepare aligned fibres and worm-like micelles from low molecular weight gelators. Shearing followed by drying leads to the dealignment before the water can be removed; continuous shear whilst drying is required to maintain the alignment. Combining a slow pH change with continuous shear allows alignment of the gelling fibres, which can then be dried

Atomic Faraday filter with equivalent noise bandwidth less than 1ââGHz
We demonstrate an atomic bandpass optical filter with an equivalent noise bandwidth less than 1 GHz using the D1 line in a cesium vapor. We use the ElecSus computer program to find optimal experimental parameters and find that, for important quantities, the cesium D1 line clearly outperforms other alkali metals on either D-lines. The filter simultaneously achieves a peak transmission of 77%, a passband of 310 MHz, and an equivalent noise bandwidth of 0.96 GHz, for a magnetic field of 45.3 G and a temperature of 68.0°C. Experimentally, the prediction from the model is verified. The experiment and theoretical predictions show excellent agreement
A selected ion flow tube study of the reactions of gas-phase cations with PSCl3
A selected ion flow tube was used to investigate the positive ion chemistry of thiophosphoryl chloride, PSCl. Rate coefficients and ion product branching ratios have been determined at room temperature for reactions with nineteen cations ; HO, CF, CF, NO, NO, SF, SF, CF, O, HO, NO, O, CO, CO, N, N, Ar, F and Ne (in order of increasing recombination energy). Complementary data described in the previous paper have been obtained for this molecule via the observation of threshold photoelectron photoion coincidences. For ions whose recombination energies are in the range 10-22 eV, comparisons are made between the product ion branching rations of PSCl from photoionisation and from ion-molecule reactions. In most instances, the data from the two experiments are well correlated, suggesting that long-range charge transfer is the dominant mechanism for these ion-molecule reactions ; the agreement is particularly good for the atomic ions Ar, F and Ne. Some reactions (e.g. O + PSCl), however, exhibit significant differences; short-range charge transfer must then be occurring following the formation of an ion-molecule complex. For ions whose recombination energies are less than 10 eV (i.e. HO, CF, CF and NO), reactions can only occur via a chemical process in which bonds are broken and formed, because the recombination energy of the cation is less than the ionisation energy of PSCl

Study of the Advantages of Internal Permanent Magnet Drive Motor with Selectable Windings for Hybrid-Electric Vehicles
This report describes research performed on the viability of changing the effectively active number of turns in the stator windings of an internal permanent magnet (IPM) electric motor to strengthen or weaken the magnetic fields in order to optimize the motor's performance at specific operating speeds and loads. Analytical and simulation studies have been complemented with research on switching mechanisms to accomplish the task. The simulation studies conducted examine the power and energy demands on a vehicle following a series of standard driving cycles and the impact on the efficiency and battery size of an electrically propelled vehicle when it uses an IPM motor with turn-switching capabilities. Both full driving cycle electric propulsion and propulsion limited starting from zero to a set speed have been investigated
A 750 mW, continuous-wave, solid-state laser source at 313 nm for cooling and manipulating trapped 9Be+ ions
We present a solid-state laser system that generates 750 mW of
continuous-wave single-frequency output at 313 nm. Sum-frequency generation
with fiber lasers at 1550 nm and 1051 nm produces up to 2 W at 626 nm. This
visible light is then converted to UV by cavity-enhanced second-harmonic
generation. The laser output can be tuned over a 495 GHz range, which includes
the 9Be+ laser cooling and repumping transitions. This is the first report of a
narrow-linewidth laser system with sufficient power to perform fault-tolerant
quantum-gate operations with trapped 9Be+ ions by use of stimulated Raman
transitions.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Localized Tachyons and the g_cl conjecture
We consider C/Z_N and C^2/Z_N orbifolds of heterotic string theories and Z_N
orbifolds of AdS_3. We study theories with N=2 worldsheet superconformal
invariance and construct RG flows. Following Harvey, Kutasov, Martinec and
Moore, we compute g_cl and show that it decreases monotonically along RG flows-
as conjectured by them. For the heterotic string theories, the gauge degrees of
freedom do not contribute to the computation of g_cl.Comment: Corrections and clarifications made, 19 page
Graph products of spheres, associative graded algebras and Hilbert series
Given a finite, simple, vertex-weighted graph, we construct a graded
associative (non-commutative) algebra, whose generators correspond to vertices
and whose ideal of relations has generators that are graded commutators
corresponding to edges. We show that the Hilbert series of this algebra is the
inverse of the clique polynomial of the graph. Using this result it easy to
recognize if the ideal is inert, from which strong results on the algebra
follow. Non-commutative Grobner bases play an important role in our proof.
There is an interesting application to toric topology. This algebra arises
naturally from a partial product of spheres, which is a special case of a
generalized moment-angle complex. We apply our result to the loop-space
homology of this space.Comment: 19 pages, v3: elaborated on connections to related work, added more

Power electronics and electric machinery challenges and opportunities in electric and hybrid vehicles
The development of power electronics and electric machinery presents significant challenges to the advancement of electric and hybrid vehicles. Electronic components and systems development for vehicle applications have progressed from the replacement of mechanical systems to the availability of features that can only be realized through interacting electronic controls and devices. Near-term applications of power electronics in vehicles will enable integrated powertrain controls, integrated chassis system controls, and navigation and communications systems. Future applications of optimized electric machinery will enable highly efficient and lightweight systems. This paper will explore the areas where research and development is required to ensure the continued development of power electronics and electric machines to meet the rigorous demands of automotive applications. Additionally, recent advances in automotive related power electronics and electric machinery at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will be explained. 3 refs., 5 figs
