Renormalization Group and Asymptotic Spin--Charge separation for Chiral Luttinger liquids
The phenomenon of Spin-Charge separation in non-Fermi liquids is well
understood only in certain solvable d=1 fermionic systems. In this paper we
furnish the first example of asymptotic Spin-Charge separation in a d=1 non
solvable model. This goal is achieved using Renormalization Group approach
combined with Ward-Identities and Schwinger-Dyson equations, corrected by the
presence of a bandwidth cut-offs. Such methods, contrary to bosonization, could
be in principle applied also to lattice or higher dimensional systems.Comment: 45 pages, 11 figure
Guideline: Appropriate use of tigecycline
INTRODUCTION: Tigecycline, the first of a new class of antibiotics, the glycylcyclines, was licensed in South Africa for the parenteral treatment of adult patients with complicated intraabdominal
infections (cIAIs) and complicated skin and softtissue infections (cSSTIs).
METHODS: A multidisciplinary meeting representative of the
Association of Surgeons of South Africa, the Critical Care
Society of Southern Africa, the Federation of Infectious
Diseases Societies of Southern Africa, the South African
Thoracic Society and the Trauma Society of South Africa was
held to draw up a national guideline for the appropriate use
of tigecycline. Background information reviewed included
randomised controlled trials, other relevant publications and
local antibiotic susceptibility patterns. The initial document
was drafted at the meeting. Subsequent drafts were circulated
to members of the working group for modification.
OUTPUT: The guideline addresses several important aspects
of the new agent, summarising key clinical data and
highlighting important considerations with the use of the
drug. The recommendations in this guideline are based on
currently available scientific evidence together with the
consensus opinion of the authors.
CONCLUSION: This statement was written out of concern
regarding the widespread misuse of antibiotics. Its primary
intention is to facilitate heterogeneous use of antibiotics as
a component of antibiotic stewardship and to highlight the
appropriate use of tigecycline in particular.Sponsored through an

How backscattering off a point impurity can enhance the current and make the conductance greater than e^2/h per channel
It is well known that while forward scattering has no effect on the
conductance of one-dimensional systems, backscattering off a static impurity
suppresses the current. We study the effect of a time-dependent point impurity
on the conductance of a one-channel quantum wire. At strong repulsive
interaction (Luttinger liquid parameter g<1/2), backscattering renders the
linear conductance greater than its value e^2/h in the absence of the impurity.
A possible experimental realization of our model is a constricted quantum wire
or a constricted Hall bar at fractional filling factors nu=1/(2n+1) with a

From constructive field theory to fractional stochastic calculus. (II) Constructive proof of convergence for the L\'evy area of fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index
{Let be a -dimensional fractional Brownian motion
with Hurst index , or more generally a Gaussian process whose paths
have the same local regularity. Defining properly iterated integrals of is
a difficult task because of the low H\"older regularity index of its paths. Yet
rough path theory shows it is the key to the construction of a stochastic
calculus with respect to , or to solving differential equations driven by
.
We intend to show in a series of papers how to desingularize iterated
integrals by a weak, singular non-Gaussian perturbation of the Gaussian measure
defined by a limit in law procedure. Convergence is proved by using "standard"
tools of constructive field theory, in particular cluster expansions and
renormalization. These powerful tools allow optimal estimates, and call for an
extension of Gaussian tools such as for instance the Malliavin calculus.
After a first introductory paper \cite{MagUnt1}, this one concentrates on the
details of the constructive proof of convergence for second-order iterated
integrals, also known as L\'evy area
Self-dual noncommutative \phi^4-theory in four dimensions is a non-perturbatively solvable and non-trivial quantum field theory
We study quartic matrix models with partition function Z[E,J]=\int dM
\exp(trace(JM-EM^2-(\lambda/4)M^4)). The integral is over the space of
Hermitean NxN-matrices, the external matrix E encodes the dynamics, \lambda>0
is a scalar coupling constant and the matrix J is used to generate correlation
functions. For E not a multiple of the identity matrix, we prove a universal
algebraic recursion formula which gives all higher correlation functions in
terms of the 2-point function and the distinct eigenvalues of E. The 2-point
function itself satisfies a closed non-linear equation which must be solved
case by case for given E. These results imply that if the 2-point function of a
quartic matrix model is renormalisable by mass and wavefunction
renormalisation, then the entire model is renormalisable and has vanishing
\beta-function.
As main application we prove that Euclidean \phi^4-quantum field theory on
four-dimensional Moyal space with harmonic propagation, taken at its
self-duality point and in the infinite volume limit, is exactly solvable and
non-trivial. This model is a quartic matrix model, where E has for N->\infty
the same spectrum as the Laplace operator in 4 dimensions. Using the theory of
singular integral equations of Carleman type we compute (for N->\infty and
after renormalisation of E,\lambda) the free energy density
(1/volume)\log(Z[E,J]/Z[E,0]) exactly in terms of the solution of a non-linear
integral equation. Existence of a solution is proved via the Schauder fixed
point theorem.
The derivation of the non-linear integral equation relies on an assumption

Parity Violation in Proton-Proton Scattering
Measurements of parity-violating longitudinal analyzing powers (normalized
asymmetries) in polarized proton-proton scattering provide a unique window on
the interplay between the weak and strong interactions between and within
hadrons. Several new proton-proton parity violation experiments are presently
either being performed or are being prepared for execution in the near future:
at TRIUMF at 221 MeV and 450 MeV and at COSY (Kernforschungsanlage Juelich) at
230 MeV and near 1.3 GeV. These experiments are intended to provide stringent
constraints on the set of six effective weak meson-nucleon coupling constants,
which characterize the weak interaction between hadrons in the energy domain
where meson exchange models provide an appropriate description. The 221 MeV is
unique in that it selects a single transition amplitude (3P2-1D2) and
consequently constrains the weak meson-nucleon coupling constant h_rho{pp}. The
TRIUMF 221 MeV proton-proton parity violation experiment is described in some
detail. A preliminary result for the longitudinal analyzing power is Az = (1.1
+/-0.4 +/-0.4) x 10^-7. Further proton-proton parity violation experiments are
commented on. The anomaly at 6 GeV/c requires that a new multi-GeV

Hubble expansion and structure formation in the "running FLRW model" of the cosmic evolution
A new class of FLRW cosmological models with time-evolving fundamental
parameters should emerge naturally from a description of the expansion of the
universe based on the first principles of quantum field theory and string
theory. Within this general paradigm, one expects that both the gravitational
Newton's coupling, G, and the cosmological term, Lambda, should not be strictly
constant but appear rather as smooth functions of the Hubble rate. This
scenario ("running FLRW model") predicts, in a natural way, the existence of
dynamical dark energy without invoking the participation of extraneous scalar
fields. In this paper, we perform a detailed study of these models in the light
of the latest cosmological data, which serves to illustrate the
phenomenological viability of the new dark energy paradigm as a serious
alternative to the traditional scalar field approaches. By performing a joint
likelihood analysis of the recent SNIa data, the CMB shift parameter, and the
BAOs traced by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we put tight constraints on the
main cosmological parameters. Furthermore, we derive the theoretically
predicted dark-matter halo mass function and the corresponding redshift
distribution of cluster-size halos for the "running" models studied. Despite
the fact that these models closely reproduce the standard LCDM Hubble
expansion, their normalization of the perturbation's power-spectrum varies,
imposing, in many cases, a significantly different cluster-size halo redshift
distribution. This fact indicates that it should be relatively easy to
distinguish between the "running" models and the LCDM cosmology using realistic

Search for Rare and Forbidden Dilepton Decays of the D+, Ds, and D0 Charmed Mesons
We report the results of a search for flavor-changing neutral current,
lepton-flavor violating, and lepton-number violating decays of D+, Ds, and D0
mesons (and their antiparticles) into modes containing muons and electrons.
Using data from Fermilab charm hadroproduction experiment E791, we examine the
pi,l,l and K,l,l decay modes of D+ and Ds and the l+l- decay modes of D0. No
evidence for any of these decays is found. Therefore, we present
branching-fraction upper limits at 90% confidence level for the 24 decay modes
examined. Eight of these modes have no previously reported limits, and fourteen

'Education, education, education' : legal, moral and clinical
This article brings together Professor Donald Nicolson's intellectual interest in professional legal ethics and his long-standing involvement with law clinics both as an advisor at the University of Cape Town and Director of the University of Bristol Law Clinic and the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic. In this article he looks at how legal education may help start this process of character development, arguing that the best means is through student involvement in voluntary law clinics. And here he builds upon his recent article which argues for voluntary, community service oriented law clinics over those which emphasise the education of students
