Mediating exchange bias by Verwey transition in CoO/Fe3O4 thin film

We report the tunability of the exchange bias effect by the first-order metal-insulator transition (known as the Verwey transition) of Fe3O4 in CoO (5 nm)/Fe3O4 (40 nm)/MgO (001) thin film. In the vicinity of the Verwey transition, the exchange bias field is substantially enhanced because of a sharp increase in magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant from high-temperature cubic to lowtemperature monoclinic structure. Moreover, with respect to the Fe3O4 (40 nm)/MgO (001) thin film, the coercivity field of the CoO (5 nm)/Fe3O4 (40 nm)/MgO (001) bilayer is greatly increased for all the temperature range, which would be due to the coupling between Co spins and Fe spins across the interface

Recent Trends in Hospitalization for Acute Myocardial Infarction in Beijing: Increasing Overall Burden and a Transition From ST-Segment Elevation to Non-ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction in a Population-Based Study

Comparable data on trends of hospitalization rates for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-STEMI (NSTEMI) remain unavailable in representative Asian populations. To examine the temporal trends of hospitalization for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and its subtypes in Beijing.Patients hospitalized for AMI in Beijing from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2012 were identified from the validated Hospital Discharge Information System. Trends in hospitalization rates, in-hospital mortality, length of stay (LOS), and hospitalization costs were analyzed by regression models for total AMI and for STEMI and NSTEMI separately. In total, 77,943 patients were admitted for AMI in Beijing during the 6 years, among whom 67.5% were males and 62.4% had STEMI. During the period, the rate of AMI hospitalization per 100,000 population increased by 31.2% (from 55.8 to 73.3 per 100,000 population) after age standardization, with a slight decrease in STEMI but a 3-fold increase in NSTEMI. The ratio of STEMI to NSTEMI decreased dramatically from 6.5:1.0 to 1.3:1.0. The age-standardized in-hospital mortality decreased from 11.2% to 8.6%, with a significant decreasing trend evident for STEMI in males and females (P < 0.001) and for NSTEMI in males (P = 0.02). The rate of percutaneous coronary intervention increased from 28.7% to 55.6% among STEMI patients. The total cost for AMI hospitalization increased by 56.8% after adjusting for inflation, although the LOS decreased by 1 day.The hospitalization burden for AMI has been increasing in Beijing with a transition from STEMI to NSTEMI. Diverse temporal trends in AMI subtypes from the unselected "real-world" data in Beijing may help to guide the management of AMI in China and other developing countries

Stresses in a quasi-isotropic pin loaded connector using photoelasticity

    Get PDF
Birefringent glass-epoxy and a numerical stress separation scheme are used to compute the stresses in the vicinity of a pin-loaded hole. The radial and circumferential stresses at the hole edge, and the net section and shear-out stresses are computed. The numerical and experimental results are compared with the computed stresses. The fixture used to load the connector is discussed and typical isochromatic and isoclinic fringe patterns are presented. The stress-separation scheme is briefly discussed

From Elasticity to Hypoplasticity: Dynamics of Granular Solids

"Granular elasticity," useful for calculating static stress distributions in granular media, is generalized by including the effects of slowly moving, deformed grains. The result is a hydrodynamic theory for granular solids that agrees well with models from soil mechanics

On local comparison between various metrics on Teichmüller spaces

    No full text
International audienceThere are several Teichmüller spaces associated to a surface of infinite topological type, after the choice of a particular basepoint ( a complex or a hyperbolic structure on the surface). These spaces include the quasiconformal Teichmüller space, the length spectrum Teichmüller space, the Fenchel-Nielsen Teichmüller space, and there are others. In general, these spaces are set-theoretically different. An important question is therefore to understand relations between these spaces. Each of these spaces is equipped with its own metric, and under some hypotheses, there are inclusions between these spaces. In this paper, we obtain local metric comparison results on these inclusions, namely, we show that the inclusions are locally bi-Lipschitz under certain hypotheses. To obtain these results, we use some hyperbolic geometry estimates that give new results also for surfaces of finite type. We recall that in the case of a surface of finite type, all these Teichmüller spaces coincide setwise. In the case of a surface of finite type with no boundary components (and possibly with punctures), we show that the restriction of the identity map to any thick part of Teichmüller space is globally bi-Lipschitz with respect to the length spectrum metric and the classical Teichmüller metric on the domain and on the range respectively. In the case of a surface of finite type with punctures and boundary components, there is a metric on the Teichmüller space which we call the arc metric, whose definition is analogous to the length spectrum metric, but which uses lengths of geodesic arcs instead of lengths of closed geodesics. We show that the restriction of the identity map restricted to any ``relative thick" part of Teichmüller space is globally bi-Lipschitz, with respect to any of the three metrics: the length spectrum metric, the Teichmüller metric and the arc metric on the domain and on the range

Localized gap soliton trains of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice

We develop a systematic analytical approach to study the linear and nonlinear solitary excitations of quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in an optical lattice. For the linear case, the Bloch wave in the nthnth energy band is a linear superposition of Mathieu's functions cen1ce_{n-1} and sense_n; and the Bloch wave in the nthnth band gap is a linear superposition of cence_n and sense_n. For the nonlinear case, only solitons inside the band gaps are likely to be generated and there are two types of solitons -- fundamental solitons (which is a localized and stable state) and sub-fundamental solitons (which is a lacalized but unstable state). In addition, we find that the pinning position and the amplitude of the fundamental soliton in the lattice can be controlled by adjusting both the lattice depth and spacing. Our numerical results on fundamental solitons are in quantitative agreement with those of the experimental observation [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf92}, 230401 (2004)]. Furthermore, we predict that a localized gap soliton train consisting of several fundamental solitons can be realized by increasing the length of the condensate in currently experimental conditions.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publicaiton in PR

Use of two-dimensional transmission photoelastic models to study stresses in double-lap bolted joints

    Get PDF
The stress distribution in two hole connectors in a double lap joint configuration was studied. The following steps are described: (1) fabrication of photoelastic models of double lap double hole joints designed to determine the stresses in the inner lap; (2) assessment of the effects of joint geometry on the stresses in the inner lap; and (3) quantification of differences in the stresses near the two holes. The two holes were on the centerline of the joint and the joints were loaded in tension, parallel to the centerline. Acrylic slip fit pins through the holes served as fasteners. Two dimensional transmission photoelastic models were fabricated by using transparent acrylic outer laps and a photoelastic model material for the inner laps. It is concluded that the photoelastic fringe patterns which are visible when the models are loaded are due almost entirely to stresses in the inner lap
