Factors associated with the weight of individual primal cuts and their inter-relationship in cattle
peer-reviewedInput parameters for decision support tools are comprised of, amongst others, knowledge of the associated factors and the extent of those associations with the animal-level feature of interest. The objective of the present study was to quantify the association between the animal-level factors with primal cut yields in cattle and to understand the extent of the variability in primal cut yields independent of other primal cuts or as carcass weight itself. The data used consisted of the weight of 14 primal carcass cuts (as well as carcass weight, conformation and fat score) on up to 54,250 young cattle slaughtered between 2013 and 2017. Linear mixed models, with contemporary group of herd-sex-season of slaughter as a random effect, were used to quantify the associations between a range of model fixed effects with each primal cut separately. Fixed effects in the model were dam parity, heterosis coefficient, recombination loss, a covariate per breed representing the proportion of Angus, Belgian Blue, Charolais, Jersey, Hereford, Limousin, Simmental, and Holstein-Friesian and a three-way interaction between whether the animal was born in a dairy or beef herd, sex, and age at slaughter, with or without carcass weight as a covariate in the mixed model. The raw correlations among all cuts were all positive varying from 0.33 (between the bavette and the striploin) to 0.93 (between the topside and knuckle). The partial correlation among cuts, following adjustment for differences in carcass weight, varied from -0.36 to 0.74. Age at slaughter, sex, dam parity and breed were all associated (P<0.05) with the primal cut weight. Knowledge of the relationship between the individual primal cuts, and the solutions from the models developed in the study, could prove useful inputs for decision support systems level to increase performance
The Electromagnetic Counterpart of the Binary Neutron Star Merger LIGO/VIRGO GW170817. VII. Properties of the Host Galaxy and Constraints on the Merger Timescale
We present the properties of NGC 4993, the host galaxy of GW170817, the first
gravitational wave (GW) event from the merger of a binary neutron star (BNS)
system and the first with an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart. We use both
archival photometry and new optical/near-IR imaging and spectroscopy, together
with stellar population synthesis models to infer the global properties of the
host galaxy. We infer a star formation history peaked at Gyr ago,
with subsequent exponential decline leading to a low current star formation
rate of 0.01 M yr, which we convert into a binary merger
timescale probability distribution. We find a median merger timescale of
Gyr, with a 90% confidence range of Gyr. This
in turn indicates an initial binary separation of R,
comparable to the inferred values for Galactic BNS systems. We also use new and
archival images to measure a projected offset of
the optical counterpart of kpc (0.64) from the center of NGC 4993
and to place a limit of mag on any pre-existing emission,
which rules out the brighter half of the globular cluster luminosity function.
Finally, the age and offset of the system indicates it experienced a modest
natal kick with an upper limit of km s. Future GWEM
observations of BNS mergers will enable measurement of their population delay
time distribution, which will directly inform their viability as the dominant

Realism about the Wave Function
A century after the discovery of quantum mechanics, the meaning of quantum
mechanics still remains elusive. This is largely due to the puzzling nature of
the wave function, the central object in quantum mechanics. If we are realists
about quantum mechanics, how should we understand the wave function? What does
it represent? What is its physical meaning? Answering these questions would
improve our understanding of what it means to be a realist about quantum
mechanics. In this survey article, I review and compare several realist
interpretations of the wave function. They fall into three categories:
ontological interpretations, nomological interpretations, and the \emph{sui
generis} interpretation. For simplicity, I will focus on non-relativistic

HATS-3b: An inflated hot Jupiter transiting an F-type star
We report the discovery by the HATSouth survey of HATS-3b, a transiting
extrasolar planet orbiting a V=12.4 F-dwarf star. HATS-3b has a period of P =
3.5479d, mass of Mp = 1.07MJ, and radius of Rp = 1.38RJ. Given the radius of
the planet, the brightness of the host star, and the stellar rotational
velocity (vsini = 9.0km/s), this system will make an interesting target for
future observations to measure the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect and determine its
spin-orbit alignment. We detail the low/medium-resolution reconnaissance
spectroscopy that we are now using to deal with large numbers of transiting
planet candidates produced by the HATSouth survey. We show that this important
step in discovering planets produces logg and Teff parameters at a precision
suitable for efficient candidate vetting, as well as efficiently identifying
stellar mass eclipsing binaries with radial velocity semi-amplitudes as low as

Universal Extra Dimensions and Kaluza Klein Bound States
We study the bound states of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of quarks in
certain models of Universal Extra Dimensions. Such bound states may be detected
at future lepton colliders in the cross section for the pair production of
KK-quarks near threshold. For typical values of model parameters, we find that
"KK-quarkonia" have widths in the 10 - 100 MeV range, and production cross
sections of order a few picobarns for the lightest resonances. Two body decays
of the constituent KK-quarks lead to distinctive experimental signatures. We
point out that such KK resonances may be discovered before any of the higher KK

High flux cold Rubidium atomic beam for strongly coupled Cavity QED
This paper presents a setup capable of producing a high-flux continuous beam
of cold rubidium atoms for cavity QED experiments in the regime of strong
coupling. A 2 MOT, loaded by rubidium getters in a dry film coated vapor
cell, fed a secondary moving-molasses MOT (MM-MOT) at a rate of 1.5 x
atoms/sec. The MM-MOT provided a continuous beam with tunable velocity. This
beam was then directed through the waist of a 280 m cavity resulting in a
Rabi splitting of more than +/- 10 MHz. The presence of sufficient number of
atoms in the cavity mode also enabled splitting in the polarization
perpendicular to the input. The cavity was in the strong coupling regime, with
parameters (g, , )/2 equal to (7, 3, 6)/ 2 MHz.Comment: Journal pape
Clinical setting influences off-label and unlicensed prescribing in a paediatric teaching hospital
Purpose - To estimate the prevalence of off-label and unlicensed prescribing during 2008 at a major paediatric teaching hospital in Western Australia. Methods - A 12-month retrospective study was conducted at Princess Margaret Hospital using medication chart records randomly selected from 145,550 patient encounters from the Emergency Department, Inpatient Wards and Outpatient Clinics. Patient and prescribing data were collected. Drugs were classified as off-label or unlicensed based on Australian registration data. A hierarchical system of age, indication, route of administration and dosage was used. Drugs were classified according to the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Code. Results - A total of 1,037 paediatric patients were selected where 2,654 prescriptions for 330 different drugs were prescribed to 699 patients (67.4%). Most off-label drugs (n = 295; 43.3%) were from the nervous system; a majority of unlicensed drugs were systemic hormonal preparations excluding sex hormones (n = 22, 32.4%). Inpatients were prescribed more off-label drugs than outpatients or Emergency Department patients (p < 0.0001). Most off-label prescribing occurred in infants and children (31.7% and 35.9% respectively) and the highest percentage of unlicensed prescribing (7.2%) occurred in infants (p < 0.0001). There were 25.7% of off-label and 2.6% of unlicensed medications prescribed across all three settings. Common reasons for off-label prescribing were dosage (47.4%) and age (43.2%). Conclusion - This study confirmed off-label and unlicensed use of drugs remains common. Further, that prevalence of both is influenced by the clinical setting, which has implications in regards to medication misadventure, and the need to have systems in place to minimise medication errors. Further, there remains a need for changes in the regulatory system in Australia to ensure that manufacturers incorporate, as it becomes available, evidence regarding efficacy and safety of their drugs in children in the official product information
