    Curriculum Transformation: Redesigning a Construction Management program to a Vertically and Horizontally Integrated Curriculum with Authentic Project-Based Learning

    Short Abstract: The Construction Management program at Purdue University is redesigning their curriculum to a vertically and horizontally integrated program. The curriculum will utilize authentic projects from industry partners, providing a basis for project-based learning and instruction. All faculty will team-teach the large project based courses developed for the new curriculum. Full Abstract: Traditional higher education provides students with a variety of specialized courses, combined to create a curriculum, which then translates into a major area of study. While prerequisites and course numbers provide a road map to the students for the order of classes, there is no guarantee the concepts from one course are built upon by another course. Typically, a senior capstone is the first time students are required to synthesize accumulated skills and knowledge. For the past two years, the Construction Management program at Purdue University has been redesigning their curriculum to integrate construction concepts both vertically and horizontally throughout the entire 4-year program. The new curriculum will also utilize authentic projects obtained from industry partners, which will provide the basis of the project-based learning and instruction. Team teaching by all faculty within the department will be applied in the large project based courses. While the technical information presented will remain the same, it is the hope of the faculty this new curriculum will develop students who are better prepared for the construction industry by having a higher level of written and verbal communication, increased critical thinking and problem solving skills, and display greater professionalism and initiative

    Epidemiological and molecular assessment of a measles outbreak in a highly vaccinated population of northeast Italy.

    SUMMARYTwo distinct measles outbreaks, unrelated from the epidemiological point of view but caused by genetically related strains, occurred in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy. Forty-two cases were reported during the period April–May 2008. In the first outbreak the index case was a teacher who introduced the virus into the Pordenone area, involving eight adolescents and young adults. The other concomitant outbreak occurred in the city of Trieste with 33 cases. The containment of the epidemics can be explained by the high MMR vaccine coverage in an area where the first dose was delivered to 93·4% and the second dose to 88·3% of the target children. Phylogenetic analysis of 14 measles virus strains showed that they belonged to a unique D4 genotype indistinguishable from the MVs/Enfield.GBR/14.07 strain, probably introduced from areas (i.e. Piedmont and Germany) where this genotype was present or had recently caused a large epidemic

    Proliferation Index: A Continuous Model to Predict Prognosis in Patients with Tumours of the Ewing's Sarcoma Family

    The prognostic value of proliferation index (PI) and apoptotic index (AI), caspase-8, -9 and -10 expression have been investigated in primary Ewing's sarcoma family of tumours (ESFT). Proliferating cells, detected by immunohistochemistry for Ki-67, were identified in 91% (91/100) of tumours with a median PI of 14 (range 0–87). Apoptotic cells, identified using the TUNEL assay, were detected in 96% (76/79) of ESFT; the median AI was 3 (range 0–33). Caspase-8 protein expression was negative (0) in 14% (11/79), low (1) in 33% (26/79), medium (2) in 38% (30/79) and high (3) in 15% (12/79) of tumours, caspase-9 expression was low (1) in 66% (39/59) and high (3) in 34% (20/59), and caspase-10 protein was low (1) in 37% (23/62) and negative (0) in 63% (39/62) of primary ESFT. There was no apparent relationship between caspase-8, -9 and -10 expression, PI and AI. PI was predictive of relapse-free survival (RFS; p = 0.011) and overall survival (OS; p = <0.001) in a continuous model, whereas AI did not predict outcome. Patients with tumours expressing low levels of caspase-9 protein had a trend towards a worse RFS than patients with tumours expressing higher levels of caspase-9 protein (p = 0.054, log rank test), although expression of caspases-8, -9 and/or -10 did not significantly predict RFS or OS. In a multivariate analysis model that included tumour site, tumour volume, the presence of metastatic disease at diagnosis, PI and AI, PI independently predicts OS (p = 0.003). Consistent with previous publications, patients with pelvic tumours had a significantly worse OS than patients with tumours at other sites (p = 0.028); patients with a pelvic tumour and a PI≄20 had a 6 fold-increased risk of death.     Regression of gastric high grade mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma after Helicobacter pylori eradication

    BACKGROUND—Most low grade gastric lymphomas arising from the mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) are related to Helicobacter pylori colonisation. Cases with disease limited to the stomach can be cured after H pylori eradication and remain in remission for years. In contrast, high grade lymphomas of the stomach, although also related to H pylori, do not usually respond to eradication treatment.‹CASE REPORT—A 36 year old patient was referred from another hospital with a diagnosis of a low grade gastric MALT lymphoma associated with H pylori. The patient was in stage I and while waiting for the biopsies to be reviewed H pylori eradication therapy was given as the first step of treatment. Review of the biopsies showed a high grade immunoblastic lymphoma with areas of low grade gastric MALT lymphoma (high grade gastric MALT lymphoma or diffuse large B cell lymphoma with areas of MALT type lymphoma of the WHO classification). The patient received no further treatment but has been closely followed up for 32 months with sequential endoscopies to obtain biopsies for histological studies, H pylori cultures, and polymerase chain reaction analysis of the IgH gene.‹RESULTS—After H pylori eradication the patient had a complete histological response that has been maintained for 32 months. Monoclonal IgH gene rearrangement persisted for 32( )months.‹CONCLUSION—The response of this patient indicates the possibility that some cases of high grade gastric MALT lymphoma (possibly patients in stage I with a superficial or limited disease) may still be responsive to H pylori antigenic drive and may be cured with eradication therapy. Prospective studies should be performed to identify patients with high grade gastric MALT lymphomas that may respond to eradication therapy and be spared of other more aggressive treatments.‹‹‹Keywords: mucosa associated lymphoid tissue; lymphoma; gastric lymphoma; immunoblastic lymphoma; Helicobacter pylor

    aim of the work Calprotectin (CalP) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) are biochemical markers in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). Their increased concentration indicates the onset of an inflammatory process. The aim of this study was to valuate the correlation between the levels of calprotectin and myeloperoxidase detected in the crevicular fluid (GCF) at different probing depth (PPD). Materials and methods In a total of 11 subjects with chronic periodontitis, non smokers enjoying good health and who had not undergone periodontal nor antibiotic therapy in the 6 months prior the study, 60 sites were randomly selected and bleeding on probing (BOP), PPD, quantity of GCF and concentration of MPO and CalP were recorded. The volume of GCF was assessed through inserting PerioCol paper strips in the periodontal pockets for 10 seconds, then analyzed with a micro-moisture meter electronic instrument (Periotrom 6000, Siemens). The determination of the CalP was performed by enzyme immunoassay. The determination of MPO in the crevicular fluid was performed using the spectrophotometric reading of optical density. The results were statistically analyzed (SPSS16). Results PPD 5 mm (GCF=0,72 \u3bcg/\u3bcl; CalP=10,06 \u3bcg/\u3bcl; MPO=3,69 \u3bcg/\u3bcl); PPD 6 mm (GCF=0,78 \u3bcg/\u3bcl; CalP=10,64 \u3bcg/\u3bcl; MPO=5,45 \u3bcg/\u3bcl); PPD 657 mm (GCF=1,32 \u3bcg/\u3bcl; CalP=7,20 \u3bcg/\u3bcl; MPO=5,55 \u3bcg/\u3bcl). There were no statistically significant differences in the concentrations of MPO and CalP in the deeper periodontal pocket. Conclusion The concentration ofmyeloperoxidase seems significantly related to the increased presence of neutrophils into the deepest pockets
