    Radio Emission Associated with Ultraluminous X-ray Sources in the Galaxy Merger NGC 3256

    We present new 6, 3.6, and 2 cm VLA radio observations of the nearby merger system NGC 3256, with resolutions of ~100 pc, which reveal compact radio sources embedded in more diffuse emission at all three wavelengths. The two radio nuclei are partially resolved, but the two dominant compact sources that remain coincide with the two most powerful compact Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) recently reported by Lira et al. The radio/X-ray ratios for these two sources are too high by factors of >100-1000 to be normal X-ray binaries. However, their radio and X-ray powers and ratios are consistent with low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs), and optical emission lines suggest the presence of a nuclear disk around the northern nucleus. If the two nuclear ULXs are LLAGNs, their associated black holes are separated by only \~1kpc, about 6 times closer to one another than those found recently in the merger galaxy NGC 6240. A third ULX on the outskirts of the merger is also a radio source, and probably is a collection of supernova remnants. The remaining ULXs are not coincident with any source of compact radio emission, and are consistent with expectations for beamed X-ray binaries or intermediate-mass black holes.Comment: Accepted for ApJ (10 pages, 5 figures

    Raman spectroscopy, a non-destructive solution to the study of glass and its alteration

    This paper presents the potential of Raman spectroscopy, a non-destructive technique which can be applied in-situ, for the analyses of glass and their alteration. Recent analytical developments are summarised for different glass composition and practical examples are given. The paper describes how to extract compositional information from the glass, first based on the spectra profile to distinguish rapidly alkali silicate from alkaline-earth alkali silicate and lead alkali silicate glass, then using the spectral decomposition and correlations to extract quantitative data. For alkali silicate glasses, that are most prone to alteration, the spectral characteristics are described to interpret the alteration process (selective leaching or dissolution of the glass) from the Raman spectra of the altered glass. These developments have greatly widened the potential of the technique and supplement well its ability to measure the thickness of the altered layer and identify the crystalline deposits

    Transcriptome response of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to competition with ecologically similar non-native species

    Non-native species may be introduced either intentionally or unintentionally, and their impact can range from benign to highly disruptive. Non-native salmonids were introduced into Lake Ontario, Canada, to provide recreational fishing opportunities; however, the establishment of those species has been proposed as a significant barrier to the reintroduction of native Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) due to intense interspecific competition. In this study, we compared population differences of Atlantic salmon in transcriptome response to interspecific competition. We reared Atlantic salmon from two populations (LaHave River and Sebago Lake) with fish of each of three non-native salmonids (Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, rainbow trout O. mykiss, and brown trout S. trutta) in artificial streams. We used RNA-seq to assess transcriptome differences between the Atlantic salmon populations and the responses of these populations to the interspecific competition treatments after 10 months of competition in the stream tanks. We found that population differences in gene expression were generally greater than the effects of interspecific competition. Interestingly, we found that the two Atlantic salmon populations exhibited similar responses to interspecific competition based on functional gene ontologies, but the specific genes within those ontologies were different. Our transcriptome analyses suggest that the most stressful competitor (as measured by the highest number of differentially expressed genes) differs between the two study populations. Our transcriptome characterization highlights the importance of source population selection for conservation applications, as organisms with different evolutionary histories can possess different transcriptional responses to the same biotic stressors. The results also indicate that generalized predictions of the response of native species to interactions with introduced species may not be appropriate without incorporating potential population-specific response to introduced species

    A high gradient controlled solidification (HGC) furnace was designed and operated at gradients up to 1800 C/cm to continuously produce aluminum alloys. Rubber '0' rings for the water cooling chamber were eliminated, while still maintaining water cooling directly onto the solidified metal. An HGC unit for high temperature ferrous alloys was also designed. Successful runs were made with cast iron, at thermal gradients up to 500 C/cm

    Sub-Relativistic Radio Jets and Parsec-Scale Absorption in Two Seyfert Galaxies

    The Very Long Baseline Array has been used at 15 GHz to image the milliarcsecond structure of the Seyfert galaxies Mrk 231 and Mrk 348 at two epochs separated by about 1.7 yr. Both galaxies contain parsec-scale double radio sources whose components have brightness temperatures of 10^9-10^{11} K, implying that they are generated by synchrotron emission. The nuclear components are identified by their strong variability between epochs, indicating that the double sources represent apparently one-sided jets. Relative component speeds are measured to be ~0.1c at separations of 1.1 pc or less (for H_0 = 65 km/s/Mpc), implying that parsec-scale Seyfert jets are intrinsically different from those in most powerful radio galaxies and quasars. The lack of observed counterjets is most likely due to free-free absorption by torus gas, with an ionized density n_e > 2 X 10^5 cm^{-3} at T~8000 K, or n_e > 10^7 cm^{-3} at T~10^{6.6} K, in the inner parsec of each galaxy. The lower density is consistent with values found from X-ray absorption measurements, while the higher temperature and density are consistent with direct radio imaging of the NGC 1068 torus by Gallimore et al.Comment: 12 pages, 2 postscript figures, LaTeX file in AASTeX format, accepted by ApJ Letter

    Assortative mating but no evidence of genetic divergence in a species characterized by a trophic polymorphism

    Disruptive selection is a process that can result in multiple sub-groups within a population, referred to as diversification. Foraging related divergence has been described in many taxa, but many questions remain about the contribution of such divergence to reproductive isolation and potentially sympatric speciation. Here we use stable isotope analysis of diet and morphological analysis of body shape to examine phenotypic divergence between littoral and pelagic foraging ecomorphs in a population of pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus). We then examine reproductive isolation between ecomorphs by comparing the isotopic compositions of nesting males to eggs from their nests (a proxy for maternal diet), and use nine microsatellite loci to examine genetic divergence between ecomorphs. Our data support the presence of distinct foraging ecomorphs in this population and indicate that there is significant positive assortative mating based on diet. We did not find evidence of genetic divergence between ecomorphs, however, indicating that isolation is either relatively recent or is not strong enough to result in genetic divergence at the microsatellite loci. Based on our findings, pumpkinseed sunfish represent a system in which to further explore the mechanisms by which natural and sexual selection contribute to divergence, prior to the occurrence of sympatric speciation

    The Emergence of the Modern Universe: Tracing the Cosmic Web

    This is the report of the Ultraviolet-Optical Working Group (UVOWG) commissioned by NASA to study the scientific rationale for new missions in ultraviolet/optical space astronomy approximately ten years from now, when the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is de-orbited. The UVOWG focused on a scientific theme, The Emergence of the Modern Universe, the period from redshifts z = 3 to 0, occupying over 80% of cosmic time and beginning after the first galaxies, quasars, and stars emerged into their present form. We considered high-throughput UV spectroscopy (10-50x throughput of HST/COS) and wide-field optical imaging (at least 10 arcmin square). The exciting science to be addressed in the post-HST era includes studies of dark matter and baryons, the origin and evolution of the elements, and the major construction phase of galaxies and quasars. Key unanswered questions include: Where is the rest of the unseen universe? What is the interplay of the dark and luminous universe? How did the IGM collapse to form the galaxies and clusters? When were galaxies, clusters, and stellar populations assembled into their current form? What is the history of star formation and chemical evolution? Are massive black holes a natural part of most galaxies? A large-aperture UV/O telescope in space (ST-2010) will provide a major facility in the 21st century for solving these scientific problems. The UVOWG recommends that the first mission be a 4m aperture, SIRTF-class mission that focuses on UV spectroscopy and wide-field imaging. In the coming decade, NASA should investigate the feasibility of an 8m telescope, by 2010, with deployable optics similar to NGST.     The Northern Middle Lobe of Centaurus A: Circumgalactic Gas in a Starburst Wind

    We present deep ultraviolet (GALEX), radio continuum (VLA) and H-alpha (Magellan) images of the circumgalactic medium around Centaurus A (NGC5128). We focus on the Northern Middle Lobe (NML), a region extending more than 50kpc beyond the galaxy and known to host a collection of striking phenomena: emission line filaments, recent star formation, disrupted HI/molecular gas streams, and short-lived X-ray clouds. Far UV emission is tightly correlated with H-alpha emission for more than 50kpc, and loosely associated with a filament of X-ray clouds and with the radio continuum emission. The radio emission in the NML region does not appear to be an extension of the inner radio jet (10kpc) or a typical radio lobe. We speculate that the "weather" seen in the NML region is a short-lived phenomenon, caused by an outflow encountering cool gas deposited by one of the recent merger/encounter events which have characterized the history of NGC5128

    Spitzer Observations of Centaurus A: Infrared Synchrotron Emission from the Northern Lobe

    We present measurements obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope in five bands from 3.6-24 microns of the northern inner radio lobe of Centaurus A, the nearest powerful radio galaxy. We show that this emission is synchrotron in origin. Comparison with ultraviolet observations from GALEX shows that diffuse ultraviolet emission exists in a smaller region than the infrared but also coincides with the radio jet. We discuss the possibility, that synchrotron emission is responsible for the ultraviolet emission and conclude that further data are required to confirm this.Comment: 4 pages, accepted by ApJ
