The error is in the fifth sentence, which reads: ââOn the basis of these findings, we performed analyses of four-marker haplotypes of rs2710102ârs759178ârs17236239ârs2538976 and identified significant association (haplotype TTAA, P = 0.049; haplotype GCAG,P = .0014).ââ Rather than ââGCAGââ, the final haplotype should read ââCGAGââ. BaFe2As2 Surface Domains and Domain Walls: Mirroring the Bulk Spin Structure
High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements on
BaFe2As2-one of the parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors-reveals
a (1x1) As-terminated unit cell on the (001) surface. However, there are
significant differences of the surface unit cell compared to the bulk: only one
of the two As atoms in the unit cell is imaged and domain walls between
different (1x1) regions display a C2 symmetry at the surface. It should have
been C2v if the STM image reflected the geometric structure of the surface or
the orthorhombic bulk. The inequivalent As atoms and the bias dependence of the
domain walls indicate that the origin of the STM image is primarily electronic
not geometric. We argue that the surface electronic topography mirrors the bulk
spin structure of BaFe2As2, via strong orbital-spin coupling
Double di ffential fragmentation cross sections measurements of 95 MeV/u 12C on thin targets for hadrontherapy
During therapeutic treatment with heavy ions like carbon, the beam undergoes
nuclear fragmentation and secondary light charged particles, in particular
protons and alpha particles, are produced. To estimate the dose deposited into
the tumors and the surrounding healthy tissues, an accurate prediction on the
fluences of these secondary fragments is necessary. Nowadays, a very limited
set of double di ffential carbon fragmentation cross sections are being
measured in the energy range used in hadrontherapy (40 to 400 MeV/u).
Therefore, new measurements are performed to determine the double di ffential
cross section of carbon on di erent thin targets. This work describes the
experimental results of an experiment performed on May 2011 at GANIL. The
double di ffential cross sections and the angular distributions of secondary
fragments produced in the 12C fragmentation at 95 MeV/u on thin targets (C,
CH2, Al, Al2O3, Ti and PMMA) have been measured. The experimental setup will be
precisely described, the systematic error study will be explained and all the
experimental data will be presented.Comment: Submitted to PR
Should Hypopharynx Cancer Continue to be Included in âMulti-Head and Neckâ Trials within the RTOG?
Purpose/Objective(s): It is becoming increasingly evident that the behavior of cancers from different subsites of the head and neck varies greatly despite similar histologic appearance. As current head and neck trials are focusing more on a risk-based approach, it is unclear into which trials patients with hypopharyngeal primaries (HP) should be included. Thus, we undertook to examine whether patients with HP perform as well as oropharyngeal primaries (OP) in the definitive setting and whether HP perform as well as larynx primaries (LX) in the post-operative setting in the multi-institutional setting. Noodles made from high amylose wheat flour attenuate postprandial glycaemia in healthy adults
Previous research has not considered the effect of high amylose wheat noodles on postprandial glycaemia. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of consumption of high amylose noodles on postprandial glycaemia over 2-h periods by monitoring changes in blood glucose concentration and calculating the total area under the blood glucose concentration curve. Twelve healthy young adults were recruited to a repeated measure randomised, single-blinded crossover trial to compare the effect of consuming noodles (180 g) containing 15%, 20% and 45% amylose on postprandial glycaemia. Fasting blood glucose concentrations were taken via finger-prick blood samples. Postprandial blood glucose concentrations were taken at 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 min. Subjects consuming high amylose noodles made with flour containing 45% amylose had significantly lower blood glucose concentration at 15, 30 and 45 min (5.5 ± 0.11, 6.1 ± 0.11 and 5.6 ± 0.11 mmol/L; p = 0.01) compared to subjects consuming low amylose noodles with 15% amylose (5.8 ± 0.12, 6.6 ± 0.12 and 5.9 ± 0.12 mmol/L). The total area under the blood glucose concentration curve after consumption of high amylose noodles with 45% amylose was 640.4 ± 9.49 mmol/L/min, 3.4% lower than consumption of low amylose noodles with 15% amylose (662.9 ± 9.49 mmol/L/min), p = 0.021. Noodles made from high amylose wheat flour attenuate postprandial glycaemia in healthy young adults, as characterised by the significantly lower blood glucose concentration and a 3.4% reduction in glycaemic response
Further Development of the Sextupole Dipole Corrector (MSCB) Magnet for the LHC
Combined sextupole-dipole corrector magnets (MSCB) will be mounted in each half cell of the new Large Hadron Collider (LHC) being built at CERN. The dipole part, used for particle orbit corrections, will be powered individually and is designed for low current, originally 30 A but now 55Â A. The sextupole part, used for chromaticity corrections, is connected via cold busbars in families of 12 or 13 magnets and is powered with 550 A. Several versions of this corrector magnet were tested as model magnets in order to develop the final design for the series. In the first design the coils are nested, with the dipole coil wound around the sextupole coil to obtain as short a magnet as possible, accepting the slight cross-talk between the coils due to persistent currents, and increased saturation effects. The design has evolved and an alternative design, in which the dipole and sextupole coils are separated, is now favored. Tests at 4.5 K and at 1.9 K were conducted to determine the training behavior, the field quality, and the cross-talk between the windings. SiPM module for the ACME III electron EDM search
This report shows the design and the performance of a large area Silicon
Photomultiplier (SiPM) module developed detection of fluorescent light emitted
from a 10 cm scale volume. The module was optimized for the planned ACME III
electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) search, which will be a powerful probe
for the existence of physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The
ACME experiment searched for the eEDM with the world's highest sensitivity
using cold ThO polar molecules (ACME II). In ACME III, SiPMs will be used for
detection of fluorescent photons (the fundamental signal of the experiment)
instead of PMTs, which were used in the previous measurement. We have developed
an optimized SiPM module, based on a 16-channel SiPM array. Key operational
parameters are characterized, including gain and noise. The SiPM dark count
rate, background light sensitivity, and optical crosstalk are found to all be
well suppressed and more than sufficient for the ACME III application.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, proceedings for NDIP2
Moment inversion problem for piecewise D-finite functions
We consider the problem of exact reconstruction of univariate functions with
jump discontinuities at unknown positions from their moments. These functions
are assumed to satisfy an a priori unknown linear homogeneous differential
equation with polynomial coefficients on each continuity interval. Therefore,
they may be specified by a finite amount of information. This reconstruction
problem has practical importance in Signal Processing and other applications.
It is somewhat of a ``folklore'' that the sequence of the moments of such
``piecewise D-finite''functions satisfies a linear recurrence relation of
bounded order and degree. We derive this recurrence relation explicitly. It
turns out that the coefficients of the differential operator which annihilates
every piece of the function, as well as the locations of the discontinuities,
appear in this recurrence in a precisely controlled manner. This leads to the
formulation of a generic algorithm for reconstructing a piecewise D-finite
function from its moments. We investigate the conditions for solvability of the
resulting linear systems in the general case, as well as analyze a few
particular examples. We provide results of numerical simulations for several
types of signals, which test the sensitivity of the proposed algorithm to
noise
Dallas with balls: televized sport, soap opera and male and female pleasures
Two of the most popular of television genres, soap opera and sports coverage have been very much differentiated along gender lines in terms of their audiences. Soap opera has been regarded very much as a 'gynocentric' genre with a large female viewing audience while the audiences for television sport have been predominantly male. Gender differentiation between the genres has had implications for the popular image of each. Soap opera has been perceived as inferior; as mere fantasy and escapism for women while television sports has been perceived as a legitimate, even edifying experience for men.
In this article the authors challenge the view that soap opera and television sport are radically different and argue that they are, in fact, very similar in a number of significant ways. They suggest that both genres invoke similar structures of feeling and sensibility in their respective audiences and that television sport is a 'male soap opera'. They consider the ways in which the viewing context of each genre is related to domestic life and leisure, the ways in which the textual structure and conventions of each genre invoke emotional identification, and finally, the ways in which both genres re-affirm gender identities
