Sedimentation study, Environmental Monitoring and Operations Guidance System (EMOGS), Kings Bay, Georgia and Florida : Phase III--FY 1989
Repeated side-scan sonar and multi-frequency bathymetric surveys, accompanied by accurate, high resolution, and repeatable
navigation, were conducted in the vicinity of a tidal inlet to define the length and time scales associated with bedforms and channel
shoaling in a structured tidal inlet. The study site, St. Mary's entrance channel along the Georgia/Florida border (Fig. I), has a
dredged channel approximately 46-52 feet in depth, bordered by a large ebb tidal delta. The tidal inlet serves Cumberland Sound,
Kings Bay, and associated waterways, providing a large discharge of water from the inlet that creates bedforms and channel
shoaling, given the abundance of sand-sized sediment in the vicinity. The jettied inlet produces flows tht are predominately
tidally-driven, whereas farther offshore the driving forces consist predominately of waves and storm-generated flows. In the
channel reaches (Table 1) between these two areas, combined wave-steady flows are present, creating a myriad of scales of
bedforms and shoaling patterns. This study was designed to elucidate the time and space scales of these variable bedforms and
shoaling patterns, emphasizing the difference in these scales between the three different flow regimes. The results provide an
important data base for quantifying shoaling processes and mechanisms in tidal inlet channels.Funding was provided by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration

On the Delivery of Recommendations in Social Software: a User's Perspective
Recommendation is a popular feature of social software. Recommendations could be made by the software autonomously or by social contacts who are often aided by the software on what to recommend. A great deal of emphasis in the literature has been given to the algorithmic solution to infer relevant and interesting recommendations. Yet, the delivery method of recommendation is still a widely unexplored research topic. This paper advocates that the success in deducing recommendations is not the sole factor for “recommendees” to consider. Users have their own requirements on the way a recommendation is made and delivered. Failure in meeting user expectations would often lead to the rejection of the recommendations as well as the violation of user experience. In this paper, we conduct an empirical research to explore such user’s perspective. We start with qualitative phase, based on interviews, and confirm and enhance the results in a quantitative phase through surveying a large sample of users. We report on the results and conclude with a set of guidelines on how recommendations delivery should be designed from a user’s perspective
LINVIEW: Incremental View Maintenance for Complex Analytical Queries
Many analytics tasks and machine learning problems can be naturally expressed
by iterative linear algebra programs. In this paper, we study the incremental
view maintenance problem for such complex analytical queries. We develop a
framework, called LINVIEW, for capturing deltas of linear algebra programs and
understanding their computational cost. Linear algebra operations tend to cause
an avalanche effect where even very local changes to the input matrices spread
out and infect all of the intermediate results and the final view, causing
incremental view maintenance to lose its performance benefit over
re-evaluation. We develop techniques based on matrix factorizations to contain
such epidemics of change. As a consequence, our techniques make incremental
view maintenance of linear algebra practical and usually substantially cheaper
than re-evaluation. We show, both analytically and experimentally, the
usefulness of these techniques when applied to standard analytics tasks. Our
evaluation demonstrates the efficiency of LINVIEW in generating parallel
incremental programs that outperform re-evaluation techniques by more than an

Video tools in pediatric goals of care communication: A systematic review
Medical advancesmean a growing array of interventions, therapies, and technologies are available to support care for children with chronic and serious conditions. Some of these approaches are supported by robust data drawn from populations that perfectly reflect an individual patient\u27s physiologic, psychologic, and social situation. But much more often, clinicians and families face decisions in the context of some—or much—uncertainty about whether the intervention will do a child more harm than good. This is particularly true for seriously ill children with a limited lifespan— whether the child is a neonate born with a life-threatening brain anomaly or an adolescent with cancer. Because there is no clear right decision in these circumstances, clinical teams review potential benefits and burdens and prioritize the care goals and expectations held by the child\u27s family [1]. Communication about these aspects of care are often referred to as Goals of Care”. This patient- and family-centered approach identifies valued care, avoids unwanted interventions, and fosters holistic family support [2]. In their 2019 paper, Secunda, et al. offer an operational definition of Goals of Care: “…the overarching aims of medical care for a patient that are informed by patients’ underlying values and priorities, established within the existing clinical context, and used to guide decisions about the use of or limitation on specificmedical interventions” [2]. It is fundamental to shared decision-making and relies on bidirectional communication, particularly since care goals are usually discussed in the setting of clinical conflict, poor prognosis, or treatment limitations [3]. Yet while the Goals of Care terminology is often a vernacular phrase for clinical teams, it is, in fact, jargon that can be ambiguous in conversations with families [4]. A clinician\u27s request to discuss Goals of Care may signal unfamiliar, confusing, intimidating, or emotionally laden conversational domains to families. Additional ambiguity arises from the fact that Goals of Care conversations often occur in the context of a changing prognosis and a background of baseline uncertainty. This gap in understanding and communication undermines family support. Families processing their own hopes and goals for a child find a sense of solidarity and support from hearing about the experiences of other families facing similar situations [5-7]. Several studies have identified the value of video modality as a source for Goals of Care education, including readying viewers for discussion, enhancing emotional awareness, and processing information in a safe space [8-11]. Given the emotion-laden nature of Goals of Care conversations, videos have been recognized as helpful preparation for families [12]. Thoughtfully produced video content offers viewers access to insight, emotion, and knowledge in an almost experiential way. This may be particularly important to families of children with serious illness who often feel isolated from other families experiencing similar challenges [13]
Privacy by Design: From Technologies to Architectures (Position Paper)
Existing work on privacy by design mostly focus on technologies rather than
methodologies and on components rather than architectures. In this paper, we
advocate the idea that privacy by design should also be addressed at the
architectural level and be associated with suitable methodologies. Among other
benefits, architectural descriptions enable a more systematic exploration of
the design space. In addition, because privacy is intrinsically a complex
notion that can be in tension with other requirements, we believe that formal
methods should play a key role in this area. After presenting our position, we
provide some hints on how our approach can turn into practice based on ongoing
work on a privacy by design environment
TogoDoc Server/Client System: Smart Recommendation and Efficient Management of Life Science Literature
In this paper, we describe a server/client literature management system specialized for the life science domain, the TogoDoc system (Togo, pronounced Toe-Go, is a romanization of a Japanese word for integration). The server and the client program cooperate closely over the Internet to provide life scientists with an effective literature recommendation service and efficient literature management. The content-based and personalized literature recommendation helps researchers to isolate interesting papers from the “tsunami” of literature, in which, on average, more than one biomedical paper is added to MEDLINE every minute. Because researchers these days need to cover updates of much wider topics to generate hypotheses using massive datasets obtained from public databases or omics experiments, the importance of having an effective literature recommendation service is rising. The automatic recommendation is based on the content of personal literature libraries of electronic PDF papers. The client program automatically analyzes these files, which are sometimes deeply buried in storage disks of researchers' personal computers. Just saving PDF papers to the designated folders makes the client program automatically analyze and retrieve metadata, rename file names, synchronize the data to the server, and receive the recommendation lists of newly published papers, thus accomplishing effortless literature management. In addition, the tag suggestion and associative search functions are provided for easy classification of and access to past papers (researchers who read many papers sometimes only vaguely remember or completely forget what they read in the past). The TogoDoc system is available for both Windows and Mac OS X and is free. Patenting and licensing of university research: promoting innovation or undermining academic values?
Since the 1980s in the US and the 1990s in Europe, patenting and licensing activities by universities have massively increased. This is strongly encouraged by governments throughout the Western world. Many regard academic patenting as essential to achieve 'knowledge transfer' from academia to industry. This trend has far-reaching consequences for access to the fruits of academic research and so the question arises whether the current policies are indeed promoting innovation or whether they are instead a symptom of a pro-intellectual property (IP) culture which is blind to adverse effects. Addressing this question requires both empirical analysis (how real is the link between academic patenting and licensing and 'development' of academic research by industry?) and normative assessment (which justifications are given for the current policies and to what extent do they threaten important academic values?). After illustrating the major rise of academic patenting and licensing in the US and Europe and commenting on the increasing trend of 'upstream' patenting and the focus on exclusive as opposed to non-exclusive licences, this paper will discuss five negative effects of these trends. Subsequently, the question as to why policymakers seem to ignore these adverse effects will be addressed. Finally, a number of proposals for improving university policies will be made
