    A description of an automated database comparison program

    An interactive FORTRAN computer comparison program designed to automatically locate regions of incongruity between two databases is described. The software, guided by user input parameters, incrementally compares the databases and generates plots of these regions in the databases which do not compare within a specified tolerance. Additionally, tools are provided within the software which enable the user to statistically reduce the number of data points in the databases compared. To facilitate the description of these tools, the procedures used to compare two aerodynamic databases for an F-18A fighter aircraft are detailed

    Solitude, Silence, and the Training of Psychotherapists: A Preliminary Study

    The spiritual disciplines of silence and solitude have long been practiced within the contemplative Christian tradition as a means of character transformation and experiencing God. Do these disciplines affect the use of silence in psychotherapy for Christian clinicians in a graduate training program? Nineteen graduate students in clinical psychology were assigned to a wait-list control condition or a training program involving the disciplines of solitude and silence, and the groups were reversed after the ftrst cohort completed the spiritual disciplines training. One group, which was coincidentally comprised of more introverted individuals, demonstrated a striking increase in the number of silent periods and total duration of silence during simulated psychotherapy sessions during the period of training. The other group, more extraverted in nature, did not show significant changes in therapeutic silence during the training. These results cause us to pose research questions regarding the interaction of personality characteristics and spiritual disciplines in training Christian psychotherapists

    Psychologists Collaborating With Clergy

    If a patient adheres to religious values and practices, should the treating psychologist get input from a clergyperson? How frequent is clergy-psychologist collaboration? What obstacles impede such collaboration? An exploratory survey questionnaire was sent to 200 clergy, 200 psychologists interested in religious issues, and 200 psychologists selected without regard to religious interests or values. Four themes were assessed: types of collaborative activities, frequency of collaboration, obstacles to collaboration, and ways to enhance collaboration. Strategies for promoting clergy-psychologist collaboration include challenging unidirectional referral assumptions, building trust through proximity and familiarity, and considering the importance of shared values and beliefs

    A Computer Program to Teach Nonsexist Language

    A computer program designed to teach nonsexist language is described. The interactive program teaches students to recognize the various forms of sexist language described in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 1983) and to correct sexist language without mixing singular and plural pronouns. Student performance records are saved to a disk file for later review by the instructor. In a preliminary study with general psychology students, the software was as effective in teaching nonsexist language as was a didactic presentation on the topic and was more effective than no presentation

    With the increasing popularity of Christian lay counseling programs come questions and concerns about ethical sensitivity to issues of competence. Ten guidelines are proposed for assessing the competence of lay Christian counselors: (1) are they not living in blatant sin, (2) are they and their families spiritually and emotionally healthy, (3) do they understand and use Scripture wisely, (4) do they represent themselves accurately, (5) do they refer when appropriate, (6) do they practice within their level of training, (7) do they request help for their own problems, (8) do they maintain current awareness of pertinent new developments, (9) do they use care when speaking in public, and (10) are they sensitive to human diversity. Implications for the emotional and mental health of the church are discussed

    Early Cretaceous biogeographic and oceanographic synthesis of Leg 123 (off Northwestern Australia)

    Biogeographic observations made by Leg 123 shipboard paleontologists for Lower Cretaceous nannofossils, foraminifers, radiolarians, belemnites, and inoceramids are combined in this chapter to evaluate the paleoceanographic history of the northwestern Australian margin and adjacent basins. Each fossil group is characterized at specific intervals of Cretaceous time and compared with data from Tethyan and Southern Hemisphere high-latitude localities. Special attention is given to the biogeographic observations made for the Falkland Plateau (DSDP Legs 36 and 71) and the Weddell Sea (ODP Leg 113). Both areas have yielded valuable Lower Cretaceous fossil records of the circumantarctic high latitudes. In general, the Neocomian fossil record from DSDP and ODP sites off northwestern Australia has important southern high-latitude affinities and weak Tethyan influence. The same is true for the pelagic lithofacies: radiolarian chert and/or nannofossil limestone, dominant in the Tethyan Lower Cretaceous, are minor lithologies in the Exmouth-Argo sites. These observations, together with the young age of the Argo crust and plate tectonic considerations, suggest that the Argo Basin was not part of the Tethys Realm. The biogeography of the Neocomian radiolarian and nannofossil assemblages suggests opening of a seaway during the Berriasian that connected the circumantarctic area with the Argo Basin, which resulted in the influx of southern high-latitude waters. This conclusion constrains the initial fit and break-up history of Gondwana. Our results favor the loose fit of the western Australian margin with southeast India by Ricou et al. (1990), which accounts for a deeper water connection with the Weddell-Mozambique basins via drowned marginal plateaus as early as the Berriasian. In fits of the du Toit-type (1937), India would remain attached to Antarctica, at least until the late Valanginian, making such a connection impossible. After the Barremian, increasing Tethyan influence is evident in all fossil groups, although southern high-latitude taxa are still present. Biogeographic domains, such as the southern extension of Nannoconus and Ticinella suggest paleolatitudes of about 50°S for the Exmouth-Argo area. Alternatively, if paleolatitudes of about 35° are accepted, these biogeographic limits were displaced northward at least 15° along Australia in comparison to the southern Atlantic. In this case, the proto-circumantarctic current was deflected northward into an eastern boundary current off Australia and carried circumantarctic cold water into the middle latitudes. Late Aptian/early Albian time is characterized by mixing of Tethyan and southern faunal elements and a significant gradient in Albian surface-water temperatures over 10° latitude along the Australian margin, as indicated by planktonic foraminifers. Both phenomena may be indicative of convergence of temperate and antarctic waters near the Australian margin. High fertility conditions, reflected by radiolarian cherts, are suggestive of coastal upwelling during that time

    Aerodynamic, propulsion, and mass models for a generic, horizontal-takeoff, single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) configuration are presented which are suitable for use in point mass as well as batch and real-time six degree-of-freedom simulations. The simulations can be used to investigate ascent performance issues and to allow research, refinement, and evaluation of integrated guidance/flight/propulsion/thermal control systems, design concepts, and methodologies for SSTO missions. Aerodynamic force and moment coefficients are given as functions of angle of attack, Mach number, and control surface deflections. The model data were estimated by using a subsonic/supersonic panel code and a hypersonic local surface inclination code. Thrust coefficient and engine specific impulse were estimated using a two-dimensional forebody, inlet, nozzle code and a one-dimensional combustor code and are given as functions of Mach number, dynamic pressure, and fuel equivalence ratio. Rigid-body mass moments of inertia and center of gravity location are functions of vehicle weight which is in turn a function of fuel flow

    Spatial distribution of copepods in fast ice of eastern Antarctica

    The distribution and abundance of sympagic copepods in fast ice of the Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) were investigated between October and December 1995. Copepods were collected from six sites between the northern Vestfold Hills (Murphy Rocks) and Mawson Station, a distance of approximately 650km. Nine species of copepods were identified from the ice cores, however, of these only three were recorded regularly : Paralabidocera antarctica, Drescheriella glacialis and Stephos longipes. The density of copepods was highest in the bottom few cm of ice, with abundances reaching up to 147l^. The highest concentrations of chlorophyll α were also found in the bottom portion of ice, suggesting that the copepods congregated in regions of high food availability. All developmental stages of Drescheriella glacialis were observed during this study, often from within a single core. In contrast, Paralabidocera antarctica occurred mainly as early copepodite stages, and Stephos longipes mainly as nauplii. These observations were consistent with the documented life cycles for each species. Drescheriella glacialis appears to reproduce and breed within the ice, Paralabidocera antarctica overwinters in the ice but enters a pelagic phase as late-stage copepodids, while nauplii of Stephos longipes are the predominant stages which associate closely with sea ice
