Cosmological gravitomagnetism and Mach's principle
The spin axes of gyroscopes experimentally define local non-rotating frames.
But what physical cause governs the time-evolution of gyroscope axes? We
consider linear perturbations of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with
k=0. We ask: Will cosmological vorticity perturbations exactly drag the spin
axes of gyroscopes relative to the directions of geodesics to quasars in the
asymptotic unperturbed FRW space? Using Cartan's formalism with local
orthonormal bases we cast the laws of linear cosmological gravitomagnetism into
a form showing the close correspondence with the laws of ordinary magnetism.
Our results, valid for any equation of state for cosmological matter, are: 1)
The dragging of a gyroscope axis by rotational perturbations of matter beyond
the Hubble-dot radius from the gyroscope is exponentially suppressed, where dot
is the derivative with respect to cosmic time. 2) If the perturbation of matter
is a homogeneous rotation inside some radius around a gyroscope, then exact
dragging of the gyroscope axis by the rotational perturbation is reached
exponentially fast as the rotation radius grows beyond the H-dot radius. 3) For
the most general linear cosmological perturbations the time-evolution of all
gyroscope spin axes exactly follow a weighted average of the energy currents of
cosmological matter. The weight function is the same as in Ampere's law except
that the inverse square law is replaced by the Yukawa force with the Hubble-dot
cutoff. Our results demonstrate (in first order perturbation theory for FRW
cosmologies with k = 0) the validity of Mach's hypothesis that axes of local
non-rotating frames precisely follow an average of the motion of cosmic matter.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure. Comments and references adde
Coherent resonant tunneling in ac fields
We have analyzed the tunneling transmission probability and electronic
current density through resonant heterostructures in the presence of an
external electromagnetic field. In this work, we compare two different models
for a double barrier : In the first case the effect of the external field is
taken into account by spatially dependent AC voltages and in the second one the
electromagnetic field is described in terms of a photon field that irradiates
homogeneously the whole sample. While in the first description the tunneling
takes place mainly through photo sidebands in the case of homogeneous
illumination the main effective tunneling channels correspond to the coupling
between different electronic states due to photon absorption and emission. The
difference of tunneling mechanisms between these configurations is strongly
reflected in the transmission and current density which present very different
features in both cases. In order to analyze these effects we have obtained,
within the Transfer Hamiltonian framework, a general expression for the
transition probability for coherent resonant tunneling in terms of the Green's
function of the system.Comment: 16 pages,Figures available upon request,to appear in Phys.Rev B (15

Mach's principle: Exact frame-dragging via gravitomagnetism in perturbed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes with
We show that the dragging of the axis directions of local inertial frames by
a weighted average of the energy currents in the universe is exact for all
linear perturbations of any Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe with K =
(+1, -1, 0) and of Einstein's static closed universe. This includes FRW
universes which are arbitrarily close to the Milne Universe, which is empty,
and to the de Sitter universe. Hence the postulate formulated by E. Mach about
the physical cause for the time-evolution of the axis directions of inertial
frames is shown to hold in cosmological General Relativity for linear
perturbations. The time-evolution of axis directions of local inertial frames
(relative to given local fiducial axes) is given experimentally by the
precession angular velocity of gyroscopes, which in turn is given by the
operational definition of the gravitomagnetic field. The gravitomagnetic field
is caused by cosmological energy currents via the momentum constraint. This
equation for cosmological gravitomagnetism is analogous to Ampere's law, but it
holds also for time-dependent situtations. In the solution for an open universe
the 1/r^2-force of Ampere is replaced by a Yukawa force which is of identical
form for FRW backgrounds with The scale of the exponential
cutoff is the H-dot radius, where H is the Hubble rate, and dot is the
derivative with respect to cosmic time. Analogous results hold for energy
currents in a closed FRW universe, K = +1, and in Einstein's closed static
universe.Comment: 23 pages, no figures. Final published version. Additional material in

General Matrix Inversion for the Calibration of Electric Field Sensor Arrays on Aircraft Platforms
We have developed a matrix calibration procedure that uniquely relates the electric fields measured at the aircraft with the external vector electric field and net aircraft charge. Our calibration method is being used with all of our aircraft/electric field sensing combinations and can be generalized to any reasonable combination of electric field measurements and aircraft. We determine a calibration matrix that represents the individual instrument responses to the external electric field. The aircraft geometry and configuration of field mills (FMs) uniquely define the matrix. The matrix can then be inverted to determine the external electric field and net aircraft charge from the FM outputs. A distinct advantage of the method is that if one or more FMs need to be eliminated or de-emphasized (for example, due to a malfunction), it is a simple matter to reinvert the matrix without the malfunctioning FMs. To demonstrate our calibration technique, we present data from several of our aircraft programs (ER-2, DC-8, Altus, Citation)
Experiment and modelling of birefringent flows using commercial CFD code
It is well-known that certain fluids are birefringent and when flows are viewed in polarised light interference fringes are observed. The fringes are caused by a phase shift in the light passing through the fluid and are proportional to the integral of the maximum shear strains in the fluid. In order to understand what is happening within the three dimensional flow and overcome the difficulties due to this integration, additional computational or experimental information is needed. In this work, a commercially available computer code (Fluent) is used for the first time to model the flows. The flow data are then exported to a spreadsheet where the shear rates are integrated across the field and then banded for graphical output. The results from this are then compared to results generated from birefringent flow experiments and the agreement is found to be good since the modelled fringes show the same patterns as those in the experiment. This novel use of computational and experimental techniques together will allow quantitative analysis of three-dimensional flows in the future. Currently, there are still a lot of empirical variables involved in fitting the computational fringes to the experiment, but the results of this preliminary study show that this is a promising approach to this type of problem
Synthesis of an antiviral drug precursor from chitin using a saprophyte as a whole-cell catalyst
Background:
Recent incidents, such as the SARS and influenza epidemics, have highlighted the need for readily available antiviral drugs. One important precursor currently used for the production of Relenza, an antiviral product from GlaxoSmithKline, is N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuNAc). This substance has a considerably high market price despite efforts to develop cost-reducing (biotechnological) production processes. Hypocrea jecorina (Trichoderma reesei) is a saprophyte noted for its abundant secretion of hydrolytic enzymes and its potential to degrade chitin to its monomer N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc). Chitin is considered the second most abundant biomass available on earth and therefore an attractive raw material.
Results:
In this study, we introduced two enzymes from bacterial origin into Hypocrea, which convert GlcNAc into NeuNAc via N-acetylmannosamine. This enabled the fungus to produce NeuNAc from the cheap starting material chitin in liquid culture. Furthermore, we expressed the two recombinant enzymes as GST-fusion proteins and developed an enzyme assay for monitoring their enzymatic functionality. Finally, we demonstrated that Hypocrea does not metabolize NeuNAc and that no NeuNAc-uptake by the fungus occurs, which are important prerequisites for a potential production strategy.
Conclusions:
This study is a proof of concept for the possibility to engineer in a filamentous fungus a bacterial enzyme cascade, which is fully functional. Furthermore, it provides the basis for the development of a process for NeuNAc production as well as a general prospective design for production processes that use saprophytes as whole-cell catalysts
A Quasi-Spherical Gravitational Wave Solution in Kaluza-Klein Theory
An exact solution of the source-free Kaluza-Klein field equations is
presented. It is a 5D generalization of the Robinson-Trautman quasi-spherical
gravitational wave with a cosmological constant. The properties of the 5D
solution are briefly described.Comment: 10 pages Latex, Revtex, submitted to GR
Three Questions on Lorentz Violation
We review the basics of the two most widely used approaches to Lorentz
violation - the Stardard Model Extension and Noncommutative Field Theory - and
discuss in some detail the example of the modified spectrum of the synchrotron
radiation. Motivated by touching upon such a fundamental issue as Lorentz
symmetry, we ask three questions: What is behind the search for Lorentz
violation? Is String Theory a physical theory? Is there an alternative to
Supersymmetry?Comment: 16 pages; invited luecture at DICE2006 - Piombino, Italy - September

Variation of the speed of light with temperature of the expanding universe
From an extended relativistic dynamics for a particle moving in a cosmic
background field with temperature T, we aim to obtain the speed of light with
an explicit dependence on the background temperature of the universe. Although
finding the speed of light in the early universe much larger than its current
value, our approach does not violate the postulate of special relativity.
Moreover, it is shown that the high value of the speed of light in the early
universe was drastically decreased before the beginning of the inflationary
period. So we are led to conclude that the theory of varying speed of light
should be questioned as a possible solution of the horizon problem.Comment: 3 pages and 1 figure; Phys. Rev. D86, 027703 (2012
Muslim Organizations in Poland
Poland’s Muslim population is comprised of two distinct communities: Polish Tatars and Muslim immigrants. Despite demographic and ethnic differences, the groups resemble one another in their insistence that Muslims in Poland are not impervious to assimilation and modernization. Through the approaches of Euro-Islam, as adopted by the Polish Tatars, and Wasatiyya, promoted by Muslim immigrants, these Muslims grapple to find a response to radicalism and to present a moderate face to their fellow Poles
