Mixing and non-mixing local minima of the entropy contrast for blind source separation
In this paper, both non-mixing and mixing local minima of the entropy are
analyzed from the viewpoint of blind source separation (BSS); they correspond
respectively to acceptable and spurious solutions of the BSS problem. The
contribution of this work is twofold. First, a Taylor development is used to
show that the \textit{exact} output entropy cost function has a non-mixing
minimum when this output is proportional to \textit{any} of the non-Gaussian
sources, and not only when the output is proportional to the lowest entropic
source. Second, in order to prove that mixing entropy minima exist when the
source densities are strongly multimodal, an entropy approximator is proposed.
The latter has the major advantage that an error bound can be provided. Even if
this approximator (and the associated bound) is used here in the BSS context,
it can be applied for estimating the entropy of any random variable with
multimodal density.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, To appear in IEEE Transactions on Information

Distinct subpopulations of enteric neuronal progenitors defined by time of development, sympathoadrenal lineage markers and Mash-1-dependence
Enteric and sympathetic neurons have previously been proposed to be lineally related. We present independent lines of evidence that suggest that enteric neurons arise from at least two lineages, only one of which expresses markers in common with sympathoadrenal cells. In the rat, sympathoadrenal markers are expressed, in the same order as in sympathetic neurons, by a subset of enteric neuronal precursors, which also transiently express tyrosine hydroxylase. If this precursor pool is eliminated in vitro by complement-mediated lysis, enteric neurons continue to develop; however, none of these are serotonergic. In the mouse, the Mash-1−/− mutation, which eliminates sympathetic neurons, also prevents the development of enteric serotonergic neurons. Other enteric neuronal populations, however, including those that contain calcitonin gene related peptide are present. Enteric tyrosine hydroxylase-containing cells co-express Mash-1 and are eliminated by the Mash-1−/− mutation, consistent with the idea that in the mouse, as in the rat, these precursors generate serotonergic neurons. Serotonergic neurons are generated early in development, while calcitonin gene related peptide-containing enteric neurons are generated much later. These data suggest that enteric neurons are derived from at least two progenitor lineages. One transiently expresses sympathoadrenal markers, is Mash-1-dependent, and generates early-born enteric neurons, some of which are serotonergic. The other is Mash-1-independent, does not express sympathoadrenal markers, and generates late-born enteric neurons, some of which contain calcitonin gene related peptide

Ytterbium divalency and lattice disorder in near-zero thermal expansion YbGaGe
While near-zero thermal expansion (NZTE) in YbGaGe is sensitive to
stoichiometry and defect concentration, the NZTE mechanism remains elusive. We
present x-ray absorption spectra that show unequivocally that Yb is nearly
divalent in YbGaGe and the valence does not change with temperature or with
nominally 1% B or 5% C impurities, ruling out a valence-fluctuation mechanism.
Moreover, substantial changes occur in the local structure around Yb with B and
C inclusion. Together with inelastic neutron scattering measurements, these
data indicate a strong tendency for the lattice to disorder, providing a
possible explanation for NZTE in YbGaGe.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure, supplementary inf
An enhancement to the Bees Algorithm with slope angle computation and Hill Climbing Algorithm and its applications on scheduling and continuous-type optimisation problem
This paper focuses on improvements to the Bees Algorithm (BA) with slope angle computation and Hill Climbing Algorithm (SACHCA) during the local search process. First, the SAC was employed to determine the inclination of the current sites. Second, according to the slope angle, the HCA was utilised to guide the algorithm to converge to the local optima. This enabled the global optimum of the given problem to be found faster and more precisely by focusing on finding the available local optima first before turning the attention on the global optimum. The proposed enhancements to the BA have been tested on continuous-type benchmark functions and compared with other optimisation techniques. The results show that the proposed algorithm performed better than other algorithms on most of the benchmark functions. The enhanced BA performs better than the basic BA, in particular on higher dimensional and complex optimisation problems. Finally, the proposed algorithm has been used to solve the single machine scheduling problem and the results show that the proposed SAC and HCA-BA outperformed the basic BA in almost all the considered instances, in particular when the complexity of the problem increases
Examining the Cycling Behaviour of Li-Ion Batteries Using Ultrasonic Time-of-Flight Measurements
Diagnostic systems for Li-ion batteries have become increasingly important due to the larger size, and cost of the batteries being deployed in increasingly demanding applications, including electric vehicles. Here, ultrasound acoustic time-of-flight (ToF) analysis is conducted under a range of operating conditions. Measurements are performed on a commercial pouch cell during varying discharge rates to identify a range of effects that influence the acoustic ToF measurements. The cell was examined using X-ray computed tomography to ensure no significant defects were present and to confirm the layered structure in the region being investigated, validating the signal pattern observed. Analyses of the acoustic signals obtained suggest that stresses are generated in the electrodes during both the charge and discharge of the cell with the magnitude of Young's modulus for the component materials being both a function of the state-of-charge and applied current. Characteristic responses for both electrodes during the charge/discharge cycle highlight the potential application of the technique as a real-time diagnostic tool
Coherence of Nitrogen-Vacancy Electronic Spin Ensembles in Diamond
We present an experimental and theoretical study of electronic spin
decoherence in ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in bulk
high-purity diamond at room temperature. Under appropriate conditions, we find
ensemble NV spin coherence times (T_2) comparable to that of single NVs, with
T_2 > 600 microseconds for a sample with natural abundance of 13C and
paramagnetic impurity density ~10^15 cm^(-3). We also observe a sharp decrease
of the coherence time with misalignment of the static magnetic field relative
to the NV electronic spin axis, consistent with theoretical modeling of NV
coupling to a 13C nuclear spin bath. The long coherence times and increased
signal-to-noise provided by room-temperature NV ensembles will aid many
applications of NV centers in precision magnetometry and quantum information.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; v2 minor correction
Spontaneous jumping, bouncing and trampolining of hydrogel drops on a heated plate
Drops of liquid on a hot surface can exhibit fascinating behaviour such as the Leidenfrost effect in which drops hover on a vapour layer. Here Pham et al. show that when hydrogel drops are placed on a rapidly heated plate they bounce to increasing heights even if they were initially at rest
