Hidden Broad Line Seyfert 2 Galaxies in the CfA and 12micron Samples
We report the results of a spectropolarimetric survey of the CfA and 12micron
samples of Seyfert 2 galaxies (S2s). Polarized (hidden) broad line regions
(HBLRs) are confirmed in a number of galaxies, and several new cases
(F02581-1136, MCG -3-58-7, NGC 5995, NGC 6552, NGC 7682) are reported. The
12micron S2 sample shows a significantly higher incidence of HBLR (50%) than
its CfA counterpart (30%), suggesting that the latter may be incomplete in
hidden AGNs. Compared to the non-HBLR S2s, the HBLR S2s display distinctly
higher radio power relative to their far-infrared output and hotter dust
temperature as indicated by the f25/f60 color. However, the level of
obscuration is indistinguishable between the two types of S2. These results
strongly support the existence of two intrinsically different populations of
S2: one harboring an energetic, hidden S1 nucleus with BLR, and the other, a
``pure S2'', with weak or absent S1 nucleus and a strong, perhaps dominating
starburst component. Thus, the simple purely orientation-based unification

Earth resources evaluation for New Mexico by LANDSAT-2
The author has identified the following significant results. The Middle Rio Grande project has not yet progressed to the point where mineral exploration sites can be chosen; however, there does appear to be some correlation between the known structure and mineral deposits and the LANDSAT lineament map. A circular feature identified in the southern Magdalena Mountains on LANDSAT-1 imagery agrees well with the location of a newly proposed caldron complex. Several recognized and unrecognized circular features were identified on imagery of the Mogollon-Datil volcanic field. A check of aeromagnetic maps for New Mexico found that the circular features on the LANDSAT imagery showed up as areas of generally high magnetic intensity
Monomorphic subtelomeric DNA in the filamentous fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae, contains a RecQ helicase-like gene.
In most filamentous fungi, telomere-associated sequences (TASs) are polymorphic, and the presence of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) may permit the number of chromosome ends to be estimated from the number of telomeric bands obtained by restriction digestion. Here, we describe strains of Metarhizium, Gliocladium and Paecilomyces species in which only one or a few telomeric bands of unequal intensity are detectable by Southern hybridization, indicating that interchromosomal TAS exchange occurs. We also studied an anomalous strain of Metarhizium anisopliae, which produces polymorphic telomeric bands larger than 8 kb upon digestion of genomic DNA with XhoI. In this case, the first XhoI site in from the chromosome end must lie beyond the presumed monomorphic region. Cloned telomeres from this strain comprise 18?26 TTAGGG repeats, followed at the internal end of the telomere tract by five repeats of the telomere-like sequence TAAACGCTGG. An 8.1-kb TAS clone also contains a gene for a RecQ-like helicase, designated TAH1, suggesting that this TAS is analogous to the Y elements in yeast and the subtelomeric helicase ORFs of Ustilago maydis (UTASRecQ) and Magnaporthe grisea (TLH1). The TAS in the anomalous strain of M. anisopliae, however, appears distinct from these in that it is found at most telomeres and its predicted protein product possesses a significantly longer N-terminal region in comparison to the M. grisea and U. maydis helicases. Hybridization analyses showed that TAH1 homologues are present in all other anomalous M. anisopliae strains studied, as well as in some other polymorphic strains, where the recQ-like gene also appears to be telomere-associated.Published online: 2 June 2005
The influence of Harmonia axyridis morbidity on 2-Isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine in 'Cabernet Sauvignon' wine
Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae; the Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle; MALB) is a vineyard pest in many winemaking regions of the world due to its ability to taint juice and wine (âladybug taintâ) through excretion or extraction of 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine (IPMP) when the beetles are incorporated with the grapes at harvest. A common vineyard intervention is the use of insecticidal sprays and the resulting dead beetles are often incorporated in with the harvested fruit. The main objective of this study was to quantify the impact of dead MALB on IPMP concentrations in red wine. Duplicate 'Cabernet Sauvignon' wines were produced with the addition of 10 beetles·l-1 juice, added either live or at 1, 3, 7, or 60-days postmortem. A control wine with no added beetles was included. IPMP concentration was substantially higher in live-beetle wines, and decreased to base-line levels at approximately 6.5 days post-mortem. These results should assist in decisions on viticultural interventions, such as timing of insecticidal sprays, as well as the establishment of grape quality parameters.
HST Observations of the Serendipitous X-ray Companion to Mrk 273: Cluster at z=0.46?
We have used HST I-band images to identify Mrk 273X, the very unusual
high-redshift X-ray-luminous Seyfert 2 galaxy found by ROSAT in the same
field-of-view as Mrk 273. We have measured the photometric properties of Mrk
273X and have also analyzed the luminosity distribution of the faint galaxy
population seen in the HST image. The luminosity of the galaxy and the
properties of the surrounding environment suggest that Mrk 273X is the
brightest galaxy in a relatively poor cluster at a redshift near 0.46. Its
off-center location in the cluster and the presence of other galaxy groupings
in the HST image may indicate that this is a dynamically young cluster on the
verge of merging with its neighboring clusters. We find that Mrk 273X is a
bright featureless elliptical galaxy with no evidence for a disk. It follows
the de Vaucouleurs (r^{1/4}) surface brightness law very well over a range of 8
magnitudes. Though the surface brightness profile does not appear to be
dominated by the AGN, the galaxy has very blue colors that do appear to be
produced by the AGN. Mrk 273X is most similar to the IC 5063 class of active
galaxies --- a hybrid Sy 2 / powerful radio galaxy.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 8 pages,

Meeting the challenges posed by an escalating diabetes healthcare burden: A mixed methods study

Background: The ongoing escalation in the incidence of diabetes is contributing to a growing burden on health services because patients with diabetes as a co-morbidity are now spread throughout the hospital (rather than being located in specific areas). Thus, there is a need for expertise in diabetes care throughout services to ensure optimal care and reduce threats to patient safety. Aims and objectives: To identify new strategies to maintain optimal care for patients with diabetes while in hospital. Design: Mixed methods underpinned by Appreciative Inquiry. Methods: The Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire Survey (DKQS) (n = 173); focus group interviews with nurses and midwives (n = 40), and individual interviews with recently discharged hospital patients (n = 6). Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data by thematic analysis. Results: Highlight a need to enhance knowledge and confidence of diabetes management among nursing, midwifery, medical and ancillary staff through the introduction of focused education strategies. This, together with improved communication and team work, is required to relieve the burdens on frontline nursing staff and patients caused by delays in prescribing and reviewing insulin requirements and in accessing needed food for people with diabetes. Conclusions: In seeking solutions to the challenges in caring for hospitalised patients with diabetes there is a need to work across the entire hospital workforce and to develop effective and efficient methods for ensuring appropriate skills and knowledge of diabetes management for staff across complex and rapidly changing hospital systems. Relevance to clinical practice: The introduction and implementation of innovative educational and organisational strategies are needed to assist in meeting the challenges posed by an escalating diabetes healthcare burden. The safety of patients with diabetes can be optimised with the timely availability of appropriate meals and snacks, and enhanced coordination and communication between and within multidisciplinary teams
Wideband digital phase comparator for high current shunts
A wideband phase comparator for precise measurements of phase difference of
high current shunts has been developed at INRIM. The two-input digital phase
detector is realized with a precision wideband digitizer connected through a
pair of symmetric active guarded transformers to the outputs of the shunts
under comparison. Data are first acquired asynchronously, and then transferred
from on-board memory to host memory. Because of the large amount of data
collected the filtering process and the analysis algorithms are performed
outside the acquisition routine. Most of the systematic errors can be
compensated by a proper inversion procedure.
The system is suitable for comparing shunts in a wide range of currents, from
several hundred of milliampere up to 100 A, and frequencies ranging between 500
Hz and 100 kHz. Expanded uncertainty (k=2) less than 0.05 mrad, for frequency
up to 100 kHz, is obtained in the measurement of the phase difference of a
group of 10 A shunts, provided by some European NMIs, using a digitizer with
sampling frequency up to 1 MHz. An enhanced version of the phase comparator
employs a new digital phase detector with higher sampling frequency and
vertical resolution. This permits to decrease the contribution to the
uncertainty budget of the phase detector of a factor two from 20 kHz to 100
kHz. Theories and experiments show that the phase difference between two high
precision wideband digitizers, coupled as phase detector, depends on multiple
factors derived from both analog and digital imprint of each sampling system.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figure
Spatially Resolved Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of the Nuclear Region of NGC 1068
We carry out high-resolution FUSE spectroscopy of the nuclear region of NGC
1068. The first set of spectra was obtained with a 30" square aperture that
collects all emission from the narrow-line region. The data reveal a strong
broad OVI component of FWHM ~3500 kms-1 and two narrow OVI 1031/1037 components
of ~350 kms-1. The CIII 977 and NIII 991 emission lines in this spectrum can be
fitted with a narrow component of FWHM ~1000 kms-1 and a broad one of ~2500
kms-1. Another set of seven spatially resolved spectra were made using a long
slit of 1.25" X 20", at steps of ~1" along the axis of the emission-line cone.
We find that (1) Major emission lines in the FUSE wavelength range consist of a
broad and a narrow component; (2) There is a gradient in the velocity field for
the narrow OVI component of ~200 kms-1 from ~2" southwest of the nucleus to ~4"
northeast. A similar pattern is also observed with the broad OVI component,
with a gradient of ~3000 kms-1. These are consistent with the HST/STIS findings
and suggest a biconical structure in which the velocity field is mainly radial
outflow; (3) A major portion of the CIII and NIII line flux is produced in the
compact core. They are therefore not effective temperature diagnostics for the
conical region; and (4) The best-fitted UV continuum suggests virtually no
reddening, and the HeII 1085/1640 ratio suggests a consistently low extinction

ISO-SWS spectroscopy of NGC 1068
We present ISO-SWS spectroscopy of NGC 1068 for the wavelength range 2.4 to
45um, detecting a total of 36 emission lines. Most of the observed transitions
are fine structure and recombination lines originating in the narrow line
region. We compare the line profiles of optical lines and reddening-insensitive
infrared lines to constrain the dynamical structure and extinction properties
of the NLR. The considerable differences found are most likely explained by two
effects. (1) The spatial structure of the NLR is a combination of a highly
ionized outflow cone and lower excitation extended emission. (2) Parts of the
NLR, mainly in the receding part at velocities above systemic, are subject to
extinction that is significantly suppressing optical emission. Line asymmetries
and net blueshifts remain, however, even for infrared fine structure lines
suffering very little obscuration. This may be either due to an intrinsic
asymmetry of the NLR, or due to a very high column density obscuring component
which is hiding part of the NLR even from infrared view. Mid-infrared emission
of molecular hydrogen in NGC 1068 arises in a dense molecular medium at
temperatures of a few hundred Kelvin that is most likely closely related to the
warm and dense components seen in the near-infrared H2 transitions, and in
millimeter wave tracers of molecular gas. Any emission of the putative pc-scale
molecular torus is likely overwhelmed by this larger scale emission.Comment: aastex (V4), 9 eps figures. Accepted by Ap
