    Operational parameters for the superconducting cavity maser

    Tests of the superconducting cavity maser (SCM) ultra-stable frequency source have been made for the first time using a hydrogen maser for a frequency reference. In addition to characterizing the frequency stability, the sensitivity of the output frequency to several crucial parameters was determined for various operating conditions. Based on this determination, the refrigeration and thermal control systems of the SCM were modified. Subsequent tests showed substantially improved performance, especially at the longest averaging times

    Although today's western societies are commonly characterized as highly individualized, two institutional consequences have hardly been addressed yet. They are therefor the focus of this issue of the Sociologisch Gids. First, it is studied how political parties and churches, two former 'peak institutions' that almost by themselves used to control an entire life domain, adjust to the newly emerged circumstances. Second, it is studied what behavioral patterns emerge within the political and religious domains to fill the void left by the decline of those peak institutions.     Application of quasi-Monte Carlo methods to PDEs with random coefficients -- an overview and tutorial

    This article provides a high-level overview of some recent works on the application of quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) methods to PDEs with random coefficients. It is based on an in-depth survey of a similar title by the same authors, with an accompanying software package which is also briefly discussed here. Embedded in this article is a step-by-step tutorial of the required analysis for the setting known as the uniform case with first order QMC rules. The aim of this article is to provide an easy entry point for QMC experts wanting to start research in this direction and for PDE analysts and practitioners wanting to tap into contemporary QMC theory and methods.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1606.0661

    Superconductor-sapphire cavity for an all-cryogenic SCSO

    To develop a superconducting cavity stabilized oscillator (SCSO) as a frequency standard, we are studying the properties of cavities consisting of a single crystal of sapphire surrounded by a superconducting film. Measurements of quality factors of spherical and cylindrical samples of sapphire are reported. Loss values less than 2 × 10^-9 have been measured at a temperature of 1.45K. A design for an all-cryogenic SCSO is described, with particular emphasis on the cavity requirements. We conclude that such a design would allow greatly enhanced stability of operation due substantially to the thermal and physical properties of the sapphire substrate. Cavity Q requirements are relatively modest, with better than 10^-16 frequency stability predicted for a Q of 10^8

    Optical excitations in hexagonal nanonetwork materials

    Optical excitations in hexagonal nanonetwork materials, for example, Boron-Nitride (BN) sheets and nanotubes, are investigated theoretically. The bonding of BN systems is positively polarized at the B site, and is negatively polarized at the N site. There is a permanent electric dipole moment along the BN bond, whose direction is from the B site to the N site. When the exciton hopping integral is restricted to the nearest neighbors, the flat band of the exciton appears at the lowest energy. The higher optical excitations have excitation bands similar to the electronic bands of graphene planes and carbon nanotubes. The symmetry of the flat exciton band is optically forbidden, indicating that the excitons related to this band will show quite long lifetime which will cause strong luminescence properties.Comment: 4 pages; 3 figures; proceedings of "XVIth International Winterschool on Electronic Properties of Novel Materials (IWEPNM2002)

    Beyond language: The unspoken sensory-motor representation of the tongue in non-primates, non-human and human primates

    The English idiom “on the tip of my tongue” commonly acknowledges that something is known, but it cannot be immediately brought to mind. This phrase accurately describes sensorimotor functions of the tongue, which are fundamental for many tongue-related behaviors (e.g., speech), but often neglected by scientific research. Here, we review a wide range of studies conducted on non-primates, non-human and human primates with the aim of providing a comprehensive description of the cortical representation of the tongue's somatosensory inputs and motor outputs across different phylogenetic domains. First, we summarize how the properties of passive non-noxious mechanical stimuli are encoded in the putative somatosensory tongue area, which has a conserved location in the ventral portion of the somatosensory cortex across mammals. Second, we review how complex self-generated actions involving the tongue are represented in more anterior regions of the putative somato-motor tongue area. Finally, we describe multisensory response properties of the primate and non-primate tongue area by also defining how the cytoarchitecture of this area is affected by experience and deafferentation

    FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF AN ALGEBRAIC INTERMITTENCY MODEL FOR SEPARATION-INDUCED TRANSITION UNDER ELEVATED FREE-STREAM TURBULENCE

    A constitutive law for the Reynolds stresses during boundary layer laminar-to-turbulent transition, constructed in previous work by elastic-net regression on an experimental data base, has been incorporated in an algebraic intermittency model. The objective is prediction improvement of transition in a separated layer under an elevated free-stream turbulence level. The modelling for such cases functions through additional production terms in the transport equations of turbulent kinetic energy and specific dissipation rate of a k-ω turbulence model. A sensor detects the front part of a separated layer and activates the production terms. These express the effect of Klebanoff streaks generated upstream of separation on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability rolls in the separated part of the layer. By the Klebanoff streaks, the breakdown is faster and the speed of breakdown increases by the combined effects of a large adverse pressure gradient and an elevated free-stream turbulence level
