On pricing kernels, information and risk
We discuss the finding that cross-sectional characteristic based models have
yielded portfolios with higher excess monthly returns but lower risk than their
arbitrage pricing theory counterparts in an analysis of equity returns of
stocks listed on the JSE. Under the assumption of general no-arbitrage
conditions, we argue that evidence in favour of characteristic based pricing
implies that information is more likely assimilated by means of nonlinear

A possible correlation between maxima of the far ultraviolet solar irradiance and central meridian passages of solar magnetic sector boundaries
Satellite observations of the sun over almost 5 yrs show that principally two UV active longitudes have persisted over a significant portion of this observational period. A comparison between the position of solar magnetic sector boundaries and UV enhancements of the sun seems to show, at least during the year 1969, that the UV maxima tend to occur near the times when a solar sector boundary is near central meridian. An estimate of the magnitude of the variable UV solar energy input into the atmosphere resulting from the rotation of active solar longitudes is that for wavelengths less than 175 nm and down to H Lyman-alpha it exceeds the annual variation, whereas at longer wavelengths it is less
Analysis of selective chopper radiometer data
Data from SCR-B on Nimbus 5 have been processed to yield global, orbital temperatures at 10, 5, 2, 1, and 0.4 mb for the period January 1977 through April 1978 under the current task. In addition gridded values at 10 deg latitude by 20 deg longitude were prepared by space-time interpolation for the period January 1975 through April 1978. Temperature retrieval was based on regression of radiances against Meteorological Rocket Network data, with regressions recomputed at approximately six-month intervals. This data now completes a consistent time series from April 1970 to April 1978 for all available radiance data from SCR A and SCR B on Nimbus 4 and 5. The processing details for the current period are discussed, but is also applicable to the previous data periods. The accuracy of the temperature retrievals for each 6-month period for the entire eight years is given in the Appendices

Computational Fluid Dynamic Studies of Vortex Amplifier Design for the Nuclear Industry—II. Transient Conditions
In this paper computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques have been used to investigate the effect of changes to the geometry of a vortex amplifier (VXA) in the context of glovebox operations in the nuclear industry. These investigations were required because of anomalous behavior identified when, for operational reasons, a long-established VXA design was reduced in scale. The study simulates the transient aspects of two effects: back-flow into the glovebox through the VXA supply ports, and the precessing vortex core in the amplifier outlet. A temporal convergence error study indicates that there is little to be gained from reducing the time step duration below 0.1 ms. Based upon this criterion, the results of the simulation show that the percentage imbalance in the domain was well below the required figure of 1, and imbalances for momentum in all three axes were all below measurable values. Furthermore, there was no conclusive evidence of periodicity in the flow perturbations at the glovebox boundary, although good evidence of periodicity in the device itself and in the outlet pipe was seen. Under all conditions the modified geometry performed better than the control geometry with regard to aggregate reversed supply flow. The control geometry exhibited aggregate nonaxisymmetric supply port back-flow for almost all of the simulated period, unlike the alternative geometry for which the flow through the supply ports was positive, although still nonaxisymmetric, for most of the period. The simulations show how transient flow structures in the supply ports can cause flow to be reversed in individual ports, whereas aggregate flow through the device remains positive. Similar to the supply ports, flow through the outlet of the VXA under high swirl conditions is also nonaxisymmetric. A time-dependent reverse flow region was observed in both the outlet and the diffuser. It is possible that small vortices in the outlet, coupled with the larger vortex in the chamber, are responsible for the oscillations, which cause the shift in the axis of the precessing vortex core (and ultimately in the variations of mass flow in the individual supply ports). Field trials show that the modified geometry reduces the back-flow of oxygen into the glovebox by as much as 78. At purge rates of 0.65 m 3h the modified geometry was found to be less effective, the rate of leakage from the VXA increasing by 16-20. Despite this reduced performance, leakage from the modified geometry was still 63 less than the control geometry. © 2012 American Society of Mechanical Engineers
Upper-division Student Understanding of Coulomb's Law: Difficulties with Continuous Charge Distributions
Utilizing the integral expression of Coulomb's Law to determine the electric
potential from a continuous charge distribution is a canonical exercise in
Electricity and Magnetism (E&M). In this study, we use both think-aloud
interviews and responses to traditional exam questions to investigate student
difficulties with this topic at the upper-division level. Leveraging a
theoretical framework for the use of mathematics in physics, we discuss how
students activate, construct, execute and reflect on the integral form of
Coulomb's Law when solving problems with continuous charge distributions. We
present evidence that junior-level E&M students have difficulty mapping
physical systems onto the mathematical expression for the Coulomb potential.
Common challenges include difficulty expressing the difference vector in
appropriate coordinates as well as determining expressions for the differential
charge element and limits of integration for a specific charge distribution. We
discuss possible implications of these findings for future research directions

ACER: A Framework on the Use of Mathematics in Upper-division Physics
At the University of Colorado Boulder, as part of our broader efforts to
transform middle- and upper-division physics courses, we research students'
difficulties with particular concepts, methods, and tools in classical
mechanics, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics. Unsurprisingly, a number of
difficulties are related to students' use of mathematical tools (e.g.,
approximation methods). Previous work has documented a number of challenges
that students must overcome to use mathematical tools fluently in introductory
physics (e.g., mapping meaning onto mathematical symbols). We have developed a
theoretical framework to facilitate connecting students' difficulties to
challenges with specific mathematical and physical concepts. In this paper, we
motivate the need for this framework and demonstrate its utility for both
researchers and course instructors by applying it to frame results from

Analytic Framework for Students' Use of Mathematics in Upper-Division Physics
Many students in upper-division physics courses struggle with the
mathematically sophisticated tools and techniques that are required for
advanced physics content. We have developed an analytical framework to assist
instructors and researchers in characterizing students' difficulties with
specific mathematical tools when solving the long and complex problems that are
characteristic of upper-division. In this paper, we present this framework,
including its motivation and development. We also describe an application of
the framework to investigations of student difficulties with direct integration
in electricity and magnetism (i.e., Coulomb's Law) and approximation methods in
classical mechanics (i.e., Taylor series). These investigations provide
examples of the types of difficulties encountered by advanced physics students,
