    Development of Design Data for Propulsion PMR-15 Composites

    The continuing development of PMR-15 composite materials and their associated design properties is pacing the implementation of this technology on commercial aircraft. The guidelines that the FAA has issued regarding the certification of advanced composite structures are very significant with respect to future PMR-15 research and development activities. The FAA has issued an advisory circular dated 1-5-83 concerning guidelines for composite aircraft structures. Of particular significance to PMR-15 technology development is the reliance on combined environmental exposure and component testing, coupled with the stipulation that reliance on previous experience be limited to where common structures and materials have been used for a similar function. Critical environmental exposures for commercial propulsion structures include 50,000 cycle service life, exposure to skydrol, moisture and other fluids, and nacelle fire conditions

    Application of Gr/PMR-15 to commercial aircraft

    Following from early experience with polyimides on the SST program and Shuttle aft flap studies the Boeing Company is now working on collaborative programs with its principal nacelle suppliers to pursue the development of Gr/PMR-15 nacelle components. Two programs are currently in effect. The first program is directed specifically towards the flight test and service evaluation at the earliest possible date of a 747 nacelle core cowl structure. The second program seeks to firmly establish the producibility and cost of a 757 thrust reverser C duct in a production environment. The near term objectives of these programs include: (1) the comparison of estimated cost and weight of Gr/PMR-15 versus metal structure, (2) the engine test of representative composite structure, (3) the preliminary design and analysis of the C duct structure, and (4) the preparation of cost data and time schedules for the development and producibility program. In addition to powerplant structure, the propulsion ducting system has shown to be a strong candidate for Gr/PMR-15 application. Currently, the Boeing 747 Organization is evaluating the use of PMR-15 matrix composites to replace nearly 800 lbs of titanium ducting per airplane

    Placing the transfer of learning at the heart of HRD Practice

    Training evaluation is a key area of Human Resource Development, however, measuring the effectiveness of training and the transfer of learning from a training programme to the workplace can be a challenging activity. This is even more problematic for a training provider who does not have the continuous relationship or access to performance measures of an in-house training department. This paper reports on the evaluation of a training model, assessing the impact from introduction to completion of the cycle. There are three partners in this research project: the training company, the client organisation and the university researchers. Synaptic Change Ltd is a training consultancy delivering bespoke training to organisations. Utilising a case study approach, this project reports on the evaluation of their training model through its introduction at Connect Housing, a charitable housing and support provider. This presents an interesting context for the study as researchers have suggested the distinctive value led culture of the Voluntary Sector can support a strong learning culture within the organisation. The project seeks to assess the value of learning to the organisation derived from the introduction of the model. The paper explores theoretical and empirical research concerning the evaluation of training and discusses the context of the case study organisation. It then positions the methodology employed and how data will be collected. As a working paper, the findings are not available at this time but will be presented and discussed at the UFHRD conference

    Milk whey protein concentration and mRNA associated with β-lactoglobulin phenotype

    Two common genetic variants of β-lactoglobulin (β-lg), A and B, exist as co- dominant alleles in dairy cattle (Aschaffenburg, 1968). Numerous studies have shown that cows homozygous for β-lg A have more β-lg and less α-lactalbumin (α-la) and casein in their milk than cows expressing only the B variant of β-lg (Ng-Kwai-Hang et al. 1987; Graml et al. 1989; Hill, 1993; Hill et al. 1995, 1997). These differences have a significant impact on the processing characteristics of the milk. For instance, the moisture-adjusted yield of Cheddar cheese is up to 10% higher using milk from cows of the β-lg BB phenotype compared with milk from cows expressing only the A variant (Hill et al. 1997). All these studies, however, describe compositional differences associated with β-lg phenotype in established lactation only. No information is available on the first few weeks of lactation, when there are marked changes in the concentrations of β-lg and α-la (Pérez et al. 1990)

    A study of the distribution of Salmonella serovars in an integrated pig company

    A total of 3220 faecal samples from 161 pig farms (rearing and finishing units) belonging to an integrated pig enterprise were collected over a period of 18 months. Salmonella was found in 630 (19.5%) of the samples. At the farm level, 111 of 161 premises (69%) had at least one Salmonella- positive sample. 72.8% of rearing units and 66.6% of finishing units were positive for Salmonella; 61.4% of isolates were S. Typhimurium (387/630 isolates), and 25% of isolates were S. Derby (157/630). S. Panama, which was the third most common serovar (4.9% of isolates), is rarely found in pigs or other animals in the UK and appeared to be largely specific to this company, being found in the multiplier herd as well

    Power in the Multinational Corporation in Industry Equilibrium

    Recent theories of the multinational corporation introduce the property rights model of the firm and examine whether to integrate our outsource firm activities locally or to a foreign country. This paper focus instead on the internal organization of the multinational corporation by examining the power allocation between headquarters and subsidiaries. We provide a framework to analyse the interaction between the decision to serve the local market by exporting or FDI, market acces and the optimal mode of organization of the multinational corporation. We find that subsidiary managers are given most autonomy in their decision how to run the firm at intermediate levels of local competition. We then provide comparative statics for changes in fixed FDI entry costs and trade costs, information technology, the number of local competitors, and in the size of the local market

    Greenhouse gas removal (GGR) raises many cultural, ethical, legal, social, and political issues, yet in the growing area of GGR research, humanities and social sciences (HASS) research is often marginalized, constrained and depoliticised. This global dynamic is illustrated by an analysis of the UK GGR research programme. This dynamic matters for the knowledge produced and for its users. Without HASS contributions, too narrow a range of perspectives, futures and issues will be considered, undermining or overpromising the prospects for the responsible development of GGR (and threatening worse side-effects), and limiting our understanding of why and how policy demands GGR solutions in the first place. In response, we present policy principles for bringing HASS fully into GGR research, organized around three themes: (1) HASS-led GGR research, (2) Opening up GGR futures, and (3) The politics of GGR futures.We acknowledge funding from the UK GGR programme, under several specific grants: NE/P019838/1, NE/P019900/1, NE/P019951/1, NE/P019668/1, and NE/P01982X/1
