Membrane amplitude and triaxial stress in twisted bilayer graphene deciphered using first-principles directed elasticity theory and scanning tunneling microscopy
Twisted graphene layers produce a moir\'e pattern (MP) structure with a
predetermined wavelength for given twist angle. However, predicting the
membrane corrugation amplitude for any angle other than pure AB-stacked or
AA-stacked graphene is impossible using first-principles density functional
theory (DFT) due to the large supercell. Here, within elasticity theory we
define the MP structure as the minimum energy configuration, thereby leaving
the height amplitude as the only unknown parameter. The latter is determined
from DFT calculations for AB and AA stacked bilayer graphene in order to
eliminate all fitting parameters. Excellent agreement with scanning tunneling
microscopy (STM) results across multiple substrates is reported as function of

The hand of Homo naledi
A nearly complete right hand of an adult hominin was recovered from the Rising Star cave system, South Africa. Based on associated hominin material, the bones of this hand are attributed to Homo naledi. This hand reveals a long, robust thumb and derived wrist morphology that is shared with Neandertals and modern humans, and considered adaptive for intensified manual manipulation. However, the finger bones are longer and more curved than in most australopiths, indicating frequent use of the hand during life for strong grasping during locomotor climbing and suspension. These markedly curved digits in combination with an otherwise human-like wrist and palm indicate a significant degree of climbing, despite the derived nature of many aspects of the hand and other regions of the postcranial skeleton in H. naledi
Circulating microRNAs are associated with Paroxysmal or Persistent Atrial Fibrillation
Introduction: Novel methods of identifying individuals at risk for atrial fibrillation (AF) are needed. MicroRNAs (MiRNAs) regulate gene expression in a number of cardiovascular diseases, including AF. It is unknown, however, if key circulating, cardiac-specific miRNAs differ between individuals with paroxysmal or persistent AF and those in sinus rhythm.
Methods: 17 individuals with a history of AF were recruited prior to catheter ablation. 24 hospitalized patients in normal sinus rhythm and no history of AF comprised the control group. 94 plasma miRNAs were selected based on a priori associations with processes implicated in AF for evaluation using the TaqMan miRNA expression profiling system.
Results:We found that miRNA expression differed by at least 2-fold for 14 miRNAs, including several previously implicated in cardiovascular remodeling and disease (Figure 1). Application: Although power was limited by the modest sample size, these data support the rationale for using circulating miRNA as AF biomarkers. Moreover, since miRNA can modulate disease pathways, miRNA-based therapeutics would theoretically enable targeting of novel gene regulatory pathways implicated in AF in a unique and powerful manner.
Next Steps/ Future: Further investigations involving well-characterized, large samples from longitudinal studies with standardized miRNA assessment and evaluation for AF are required to validate the observed associations
Suitability of PSA-detected localised prostate cancers for focal therapy: Experience from the ProtecT study

Copyright @ 2011 Cancer Research UK.Background: Contemporary screening for prostate cancer frequently identifies small volume, low-grade lesions. Some clinicians have advocated focal prostatic ablation as an alternative to more aggressive interventions to manage these lesions. To identify which patients might benefit from focal ablative techniques, we analysed the surgical specimens of a large sample of population-detected men undergoing radical prostatectomy as part of a randomised clinical trial. Methods: Surgical specimens from 525 men who underwent prostatectomy within the ProtecT study were analysed to determine tumour volume, location and grade. These findings were compared with information available in the biopsy specimen to examine whether focal therapy could be provided appropriately. Results: Solitary cancers were found in prostatectomy specimens from 19% (100 out of 525) of men. In addition, 73 out of 425 (17%) men had multiple cancers with a solitary significant tumour focus. Thus, 173 out of 525 (33%) men had tumours potentially suitable for focal therapy. The majority of these were small, well-differentiated lesions that appeared to be pathologically insignificant (38–66%). Criteria used to select patients for focal prostatic ablation underestimated the cancer's significance in 26% (34 out of 130) of men and resulted in overtreatment in more than half. Only 18% (24 out of 130) of men presumed eligible for focal therapy, actually had significant solitary lesions. Conclusion: Focal therapy appears inappropriate for the majority of men presenting with prostate-specific antigen-detected localised prostate cancer. Unifocal prostate cancers suitable for focal ablation are difficult to identify pre-operatively using biopsy alone. Electromagnetic response functions of few-nucleon systems
Inclusive electromagnetic reactions in few-nucleon systems are studied basing
on accurate three- and four-body calculations. The longitudinal 4He(e,e')
response function obtained at q\le 600 MeV/c completely agrees with experiment.
The exact 4He spectral function obtained in a semirealistic potential model is
presented, and the accuracy of the quasielastic response calculated with its
help is assessed, as well as the accuracy of some simpler approximations for
the response. The photodisintegration cross section of 3He obtained with the
realistic AV14 NN force plus UrbanaVIII NNN force agrees with experiment. It is
shown that this cross section is very sensitive to underlying nuclear dynamics
in the E_\gamma\simeq 70-100 MeV region. In particular, the NNN nuclear force

Fuzzy Sphere Dynamics and Non-Abelian DBI in Curved Backgrounds
We consider the non-Abelian action for the dynamics of -branes in the
background of -branes, which parameterises a fuzzy sphere using the SU(2)
algebra. We find that the curved background leads to collapsing solutions for
the fuzzy sphere except when we have branes in the background, which
is a realisation of the gravitational Myers effect. Furthermore we find the
equations of motion in the Abelian and non-Abelian theories are identical in
the large limit. By picking a specific ansatz we find that we can
incorporate angular momentum into the action, although this imposes restriction
upon the dimensionality of the background solutions. We also consider the case
of non-Abelian non-BPS branes, and examine the resultant dynamics using
world-volume symmetry transformations. We find that the fuzzy sphere always
collapses but the solutions are sensitive to the combination of the two
conserved charges and we can find expanding solutions with turning points. We
go on to consider the coincident 5-brane background, and again construct
the non-Abelian theory for both BPS and non-BPS branes. In the latter case we
must use symmetry arguments to find additional conserved charges on the
world-volumes to solve the equations of motion. We find that in the Non-BPS
case there is a turning solution for specific regions of the tachyon and radion
fields. Finally we investigate the more general dynamics of fuzzy
in the -brane background, and find collapsing solutions

Continuous Interaction with a Virtual Human
Attentive Speaking and Active Listening require that a Virtual Human be capable of simultaneous perception/interpretation and production of communicative behavior. A Virtual Human should be able to signal its attitude and attention while it is listening to its interaction partner, and be able to attend to its interaction partner while it is speaking – and modify its communicative behavior on-the-fly based on what it perceives from its partner. This report presents the results of a four week summer project that was part of eNTERFACE’10. The project resulted in progress on several aspects of continuous interaction such as scheduling and interrupting multimodal behavior, automatic classification of listener responses, generation of response eliciting behavior, and models for appropriate reactions to listener responses. A pilot user study was conducted with ten participants. In addition, the project yielded a number of deliverables that are released for public access
Spinflation from Geometric Tachyon
We study the assisted inflation scenario from the rolling of BPS D3-brane
into the NS5-branes, on a transverse geometry of , coupled to
four dimensional gravity. We assume that the branes are distributed along
and the probe D3-branes spin along plane. Qualitatively this process is
similar to that of N-tachyon assisted inflation on unstable D-branes. We

Detection of chromosome aberrations in metaphase and interphase tumor cells by in situ hybridization using chromosome-specific library probes
Chromosome aberrations in two glioma cell lines were analyzed using biotinylated DNA library probes that specifically decorate chromosomes 1, 4, 7, 18 and 22 from pter to qter. Numerical changes, deletions and rearrangements of these chromosomes were radily visualized in metaphase spreads, as well as in early prophase and interphase nuclei. Complete chromosomes, deleted chromosomes and segments of translocated chromosomes were rapidly delineated in very complex karyotypes. Simultaneous hybridizations with additional subregional probes were used to further define aberrant chromosomes. Digital image analysis was used to quantitate the total complement of specific chromosomal DNAs in individual metaphase and interphase cells of each cell line. In spite of the fact that both glioma lines have been passaged in vitro for many years, an under-representation of chromosome 22 and an over-representation of chromosome 7 (specifically 7p) were observed. These observations agree with previous studies on gliomas. In addition, sequences of chromosome 4 were also found to be under-represented, especially in TC 593. These analyses indicate the power of these methods for pinpointing chromosome segments that are altered in specific types of tumors
Patterns of analgesic use, pain and self-efficacy: a cross-sectional study of patients attending a hospital rheumatology clinic
Background: Many people attending rheumatology clinics use analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories for persistent musculoskeletal pain. Guidelines for pain management recommend regular and pre-emptive use of analgesics to reduce the impact of pain. Clinical experience indicates that analgesics are often not used in this way. Studies exploring use of analgesics in arthritis have historically measured adherence to such medication. Here we examine patterns of analgesic use and their relationships to pain, self-efficacy and demographic factors.
Methods: Consecutive patients were approached in a hospital rheumatology out-patient clinic. Pattern of analgesic use was assessed by response to statements such as 'I always take my tablets every day.' Pain and self-efficacy (SE) were measured using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and Arthritis Self-Efficacy Scale (ASES). Influence of factors on pain level and regularity of analgesic use were investigated using linear regression. Differences in pain between those agreeing and disagreeing with statements regarding analgesic use were assessed using t-tests.
Results: 218 patients (85% of attendees) completed the study. Six (2.8%) patients reported no current pain, 26 (12.3%) slight, 100 (47.4%) moderate, 62 (29.4%) severe and 17 (8.1%) extreme pain. In multiple linear regression self efficacy and regularity of analgesic use were significant (p < 0.01) with lower self efficacy and more regular use of analgesics associated with more pain.
Low SE was associated with greater pain: 40 (41.7%) people with low SE reported severe pain versus 22 (18.3%) people with high SE, p < 0.001. Patients in greater pain were significantly more likely to take analgesics regularly; 13 (77%) of those in extreme pain reported always taking their analgesics every day, versus 9 (35%) in slight pain. Many patients, including 46% of those in severe pain, adjusted analgesic use to current pain level. In simple linear regression, pain was the only variable significantly associated with regularity of analgesic use: higher levels of pain corresponded to more regular analgesic use (p = 0.003).
Conclusion: Our study confirms that there is a strong inverse relationship between self-efficacy and pain severity. Analgesics are often used irregularly by people with arthritis, including some reporting severe pain
