    A new perturbative approach to the adiabatic approximation

    A new and intuitive perturbative approach to time-dependent quantum mechanics problems is presented, which is useful in situations where the evolution of the Hamiltonian is slow. The state of a system which starts in an instantaneous eigenstate of the initial Hamiltonian is written as a power series which has a straightforward diagrammatic representation. Each term of the series corresponds to a sequence of "adiabatic" evolutions, during which the system remains in an instantaneous eigenstate of the Hamiltonian, punctuated by transitions from one state to another. The first term of this series is the standard adiabatic evolution, the next is the well-known first correction to it, and subsequent terms can be written down essentially by inspection. Although the final result is perhaps not terribly surprising, it seems to be not widely known, and the interpretation is new, as far as we know.     The effect of platelet rich plasma on the treatment of androgenetic alopecia compared to placebo

    Objective: To assess the efficacy of plasma rich proteins (PRP) compared to placebo in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Design: Systematic literature review Methods: Searches were done in PubMed utilizing the terms PRP, plasma rich protein, autologous activated PRP, autologous activated plasma rich protein, androgenetic alopecia, placebo, hair count, hair density, hair follicles, hair loss, therapeutic effect, growth factors, dermatology, and regenerative medicine. Articles were excluded if they were published before 2013, involved animal studies, compared minoxidil only in their research, included only female participants, non-English articles, studies with no quantifiable data, review research articles, and injections besides the scalp Results: A meta-analysis yielded five adequate articles meeting both the inclusion and exclusion criteria including 143 patients. All five studies resulted in beneficial outcomes and statistically significant results in patients treated with PRP. Conclusion: PRP injections revealed clinically significant improvement in hair growth and density along with overall patient satisfaction. PRP injections were shown to be well tolerated with mild pain and without any major adverse effect

    Piezoelectric-based apparatus for strain tuning

    We report the design and construction of piezoelectric-based apparatus for applying continuously tuneable compressive and tensile strains to test samples. It can be used across a wide temperature range, including cryogenic temperatures. The achievable strain is large, so far up to 0.23% at cryogenic temperatures. The apparatus is compact and compatible with a wide variety of experimental probes. In addition, we present a method for mounting high-aspect-ratio samples in order to achieve high strain homogeneity.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    The mean field infinite range p=3 spin glass: equilibrium landscape and correlation time scales

    We investigate numerically the dynamical behavior of the mean field 3-spin spin glass model: we study equilibrium dynamics, and compute equilibrium time scales as a function of the system size V. We find that for increasing volumes the time scales τ\tau increase like lnτV\ln \tau \propto V.     Non-equivalence of key positively charged residues of the free fatty acid 2 receptor in the recognition and function of agonist versus antagonist ligands

    Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced in the gut by bacterial fermentation of poorly digested carbohydrates. A key mediator of their actions is the G protein-coupled Free Fatty Acid 2 (FFA2) receptor and this has been suggested as a therapeutic target for the treatment of both metabolic and inflammatory diseases. However, a lack of understanding of the molecular determinants dictating how ligands bind to this receptor has hindered development. We have developed a novel radiolabelled FFA2 antagonist in order to probe ligand binding to FFA2 and in combination with mutagenesis and molecular modelling studies define how agonist and antagonist ligands interact with the receptor. Although both agonist and antagonist ligands contain negatively charged carboxylates that interact with two key positively charged arginine residues in transmembrane domains V and VII of FFA2, there are clear differences in how these interactions occur. Specifically, while agonists require interaction with both arginine residues to bind the receptor, antagonists require an interaction with only one of the two. Moreover, different chemical series of antagonist interact preferentially with different arginine residues. A homology model capable of rationalizing these observations was developed and provides a tool that will be invaluable for identifying improved FFA2 agonists and antagonists to further define function and therapeutic opportunities of this receptor

    Classical field theory on Lie algebroids: Variational aspects

    The variational formalism for classical field theories is extended to the setting of Lie algebroids. Given a Lagrangian function we study the problem of finding critical points of the action functional when we restrict the fields to be morphisms of Lie algebroids.
