Effect of grid system on finite element calculation
Detailed parametric studies of the effect of grid system on finite element calculation for potential flows were made. These studies led to the formulation of a design criteria for optimum mesh system and the development of two methods to generate the optimum mesh system. The guidelines for optimum mesh system are: (1) the mesh structure should be regular; (2) the element should be as regular and equilateral as possible; (3) the distribution of size of element should be consistent with that of flow variables to insure maximum uniformity in error distribution; (4) for non-Dirichlet boundary conditions, smaller boundary elements or higher order interpolation functions should be used; and (5) the mesh should accommodate the boundary geometry as accurately as possible. Using Swing Resistance and Assistance to Improve Gait Symmetry in Individuals Post-Stroke
A major characteristic of hemiplegic gait observed in individuals post-stroke is spatial and temporal asymmetry, which may increase energy expenditure and the risk of falls. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of swing resistance/assistance applied to the affected leg on gait symmetry in individuals post-stroke. We recruited 10 subjects with chronic stroke who demonstrated a shorter step length with their affected leg in comparison to the non-affected leg during walking. They participated in two test sessions for swing resistance and swing assistance, respectively. During the adaptation period, subjects counteracted the step length deviation caused by the applied swing resistance force, resulting in an aftereffect consisting of improved step length symmetry during the post-adaptation period. In contrast, subjects did not counteract step length deviation caused by swing assistance during adaptation period and produced no aftereffect during the post-adaptation period. Locomotor training with swing resistance applied to the affected leg may improve step length symmetry through error-based learning. Swing assistance reduces errors in step length during stepping; however, it is unclear whether this approach would improve step length symmetry. Results from this study may be used to develop training paradigms for improving gait symmetry of stroke survivors
Impedance Matched Absorptive Thermal Blocking Filters
We have designed, fabricated and characterized absorptive thermal blocking
filters for cryogenic microwave applications. The transmission line filter's
input characteristic impedance is designed to match and its
response has been validated from 0-to-50\,GHz. The observed return loss in the
0-to-20\,GHz design band is greater than dB and shows graceful
degradation with frequency. Design considerations and equations are provided
that enable this approach to be scaled and modified for use in other
applications
QCD Viscosity to Entropy Density Ratio in the Hadronic Phase
Shear viscosity (eta) of QCD in the hadronic phase is computed by the coupled
Boltzmann equations of pions and nucleons in low temperatures and low baryon
number densities. The eta to entropy density ratio eta/s maps out the nuclear
gas-liquid phase transition by forming a valley tracing the phase transition
line in the temperature-chemical potential plane. When the phase transition
turns into a crossover, the eta/s valley gradually disappears. We suspect the
general feature for a first-order phase transition is that eta/s has a
discontinuity in the bottom of the eta/s valley. The discontinuity coincides
with the phase transition line and ends at the critical point. Beyond the
critical point, a smooth eta/s valley is seen. However, the valley could
disappear further away from the critical point. The eta/s measurements might

Explaining the entrepreneurial intentions of employees: The roles of societal norms, work-related creativity and personal resources
This article addresses the important question of why those in paid employment might be hesitant to start their own businesses. In particular, we predict how diminished work-related creativity of employees might mediate the relationship between their perceptions that societal norms do not support initiative taking and their own entrepreneurial intentions. In addition, we consider how risk tolerance and passion for work might buffer this process. Survey data, collected among public-sector employees in the United Arabic Emirates, confirm these predictions with the exception of indications for a buffering role of passion for work. For entrepreneurship stakeholders, this research reveals a critical factor – a diminished propensity to generate new ideas at work – by which employee beliefs about limited normative support for enterprising efforts may escalate into a reluctance to consider an entrepreneurial career. It also identifies how this process can be muted when employees are willing to take risks
