Some Fundamental Properties of a Multivariate von Mises Distribution
In application areas like bioinformatics multivariate distributions on angles
are encountered which show significant clustering. One approach to statistical
modelling of such situations is to use mixtures of unimodal distributions. In
the literature (Mardia et al., 2011), the multivariate von Mises distribution,
also known as the multivariate sine distribution, has been suggested for
components of such models, but work in the area has been hampered by the fact
that no good criteria for the von Mises distribution to be unimodal were
available. In this article we study the question about when a multivariate von
Mises distribution is unimodal. We give sufficient criteria for this to be the
case and show examples of distributions with multiple modes when these criteria
are violated. In addition, we propose a method to generate samples from the von

Transition from anticipatory to lag synchronization via complete synchronization in time-delay systems
The existence of anticipatory, complete and lag synchronization in a single
system having two different time-delays, that is feedback delay and
coupling delay , is identified. The transition from anticipatory to
complete synchronization and from complete to lag synchronization as a function
of coupling delay with suitable stability condition is discussed. The
existence of anticipatory and lag synchronization is characterized both by the
minimum of similarity function and the transition from on-off intermittency to
periodic structure in laminar phase distribution.Comment: 14 Pages and 12 Figure
Coherent Propagation of Polaritons in Semiconductor Heterostructures: Nonlinear Pulse Transmission in Theory and Experiment
The influence of coherent optical nonlinearities on polariton propagation
effects is studied within a theory-experiment comparison. A novel approach that
combines a microscopic treatment of the boundary problem in a sample of finite
thickness with excitonic and biexcitonic nonlinearities is introduced.

transmission and pump-probe excitation
Materials Research in Microgravity 2012
Reducing gravitational effects such as thermal and solutal buoyancy enables investigation of a large range of different phenomena in materials science. The Symposium on Materials Research in Microgravity involved 6 sessions composed of 39 presentations and 14 posters with contributions from more than 14 countries. The sessions concentrated on four different categories of topics related to ongoing reduced-gravity research. Highlights from this symposium will be featured in the September 2012 issue of JOM. The TMS Materials Processing and Manufacturing Division, Process Technology and Modeling Committee and Solidification Committee sponsored the symposium
Radio-frequency Bloch-transistor electrometer
A quantum-limited electrometer based on charge modulation of the Josephson
supercurrent in the Bloch transistor inserted into a superconducting ring is
proposed. As this ring is inductive coupled to a high-Q resonance tank circuit,
the variations of the charge on the transistor island (input signal) are
converted into variations of amplitude and phase of radio-frequency
oscillations in the tank. These variations are amplified and then detected. The
output noise, the back-action fluctuations and their cross-correlation are
computed. It is shown that our device enables measurements of the charge with a
sensitivity which is determined by the energy resolution of its amplifier, that
can be reduced down to the standard quantum limit of \hbar/2. On the basis of
this setup a "back-action-evading" scheme of the charge measurements is

Shape and structure of N=Z 64Ge; Electromagnetic transition rates from the application of the Recoil Distance Method to knock-out reaction
Transition rate measurements are reported for the first and the second 2+
states in N=Z 64Ge. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with
large-scale Shell Model calculations applying the recently developed GXPF1A
interactions. Theoretical analysis suggests that 64Ge is a collective
gamma-soft anharmonic vibrator. The measurement was done using the Recoil
Distance Method (RDM) and a unique combination of state-of-the-art instruments
at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL). States of interest
were populated via an intermediate-energy single-neutron knock-out reaction.
RDM studies of knock-out and fragmentation reaction products hold the promise
of reaching far from stability and providing lifetime information for excited
states in a wide range of nuclei
