Ontological Levels in Histological Imaging

The final version is available from IOS Press via the DOI in this record.In this paper we present an ontological perspective on ongoing work in histological and histopathological imaging involving the quantitative and algorithmic analysis of digitised images of cells and tissues. We present the derivation of consistent histological models from initially captured images of prepared tissue samples as a progression through a number of ontological levels, each populated by its distinctive classes of entities related in systematic ways to entities at other levels. We see this work as contributing to ongoing efforts to provide a consistent and widely accepted suite of ontological resources such as those currently constituting the OBO Foundry, and where possible we draw links between our work and existing ontologies within that suite.This research is supported by EPSRC through funding under grant EP/M023869/1 “Novel context-based segmentation algorithms for intelligent microscopy”
Healthy workplaces
viii, 91 leaves ; 29 cm.Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 63-79).There has been an increased interest by researchers and organizations in developing "psychologically healthy workplaces" (PHWs). This is likely due to an enhanced understanding that in order to remain competitive, organizations must promote the well-being of their employees. The purpose of the present study was to describe the types and usage of PHW practices being used by organizations in Nova Scotia, and to link these practices to various organizational outcomes. A sample of 118 management personnel responded to an online survey about the practices used in their organization. A Principal Components Analysis revealed a 3-factor model of PHWs (i.e., communication/interpersonal treatment, employee control, and health and safety). PHW factors were predictive of financial/operational performance, employee attitudes, and employee withdrawal behaviours; even after controlling for several organizational variables. Moreover, some PHW factors (i.e, communication/interpersonal treatment and employee control) were found to have an indirect effect on financial/operational performance through employee attitudes
Complements of hypersurfaces, variation maps and minimal models of arrangements
We prove the minimality of the CW-complex structure for complements of
hyperplane arrangements in by using the theory of Lefschetz
pencils and results on the variation maps within a pencil of hyperplanes. This
also provides a method to compute the Betti numbers of complements of
arrangements via global polar invariants

In this paper we describe an infrastructure and prototype system for sharing of visiting experiences across multiple media. The prototype supports synchronous co-visiting by physical and digital visitors, with digital access via either the World Wide Web or 3-dimensional graphics
Semantic categories underlying the meaning of ‘place’
This paper analyses the semantics of natural language expressions that are associated with the intuitive notion of ‘place’. We note that the nature of such terms is highly contested, and suggest that this arises from two main considerations: 1) there are a number of logically
distinct categories of place expression, which are not always clearly distinguished in discourse about ‘place’; 2) the many non-substantive place count nouns (such as ‘place’, ‘region’, ‘area’, etc.) employed in natural
language are highly ambiguous. With respect to consideration 1), we propose that place-related expressions
should be classified into the following distinct logical types: a) ‘place-like’ count nouns (further subdivided into abstract, spatial and substantive varieties), b) proper names of ‘place-like’ objects, c) locative property phrases, and d) definite descriptions of ‘place-like’ objects. We outline possible formal representations for each of these. To address consideration 2), we examine meanings, connotations and ambiguities of the English vocabulary of abstract and generic place count nouns, and identify underlying elements of meaning, which explain both
similarities and differences in the sense and usage of the various terms
5-dimensional contact SO(3)-manifolds and Dehn twists
In this paper the 5-dimensional contact SO(3)-manifolds are classified up to
equivariant contactomorphisms. The construction of such manifolds with singular
orbits requires the use of generalized Dehn twists.
We show as an application that all simply connected 5-manifoldswith singular
orbits are realized by a Brieskorn manifold with exponents (k,2,2,2). The
standard contact structure on such a manifold gives right-handed Dehn twists,
and a second contact structure defined in the article gives left-handed twists.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure; simplification of arguments by restricting

Self-repair ability of evolved self-assembling systems in cellular automata
Self-repairing systems are those that are able to reconfigure themselves following disruptions to bring them back into a defined normal state. In this paper we explore the self-repair ability of some cellular automata-like systems, which differ from classical cellular automata by the introduction of a local diffusion process inspired by chemical signalling processes in biological development. The update rules in these systems are evolved using genetic programming to self-assemble towards a target pattern. In particular, we demonstrate that once the update rules have been evolved for self-assembly, many of those update rules also provide a self-repair ability without any additional evolutionary process aimed specifically at self-repair
